The Equinox held just a 3 percent segment share, down 9 percentage points. Comparatively, RAV4 held a 20 percent share, up one percentage point while CR-V maintained a 15 percent share, flat on an annual basis. The Rogue held a share of 11 percent, up 8 percentage points, Tucson held a 7 percent share, up 2 percentage points, and Escape maintained a 7 percent share. It’s worth noting that GMC Terrain held a mere 1 percent share, down 3 percentage points.
The mainstream compact crossovers segment contracted 28 percent to 475,871 units during Q4 2021, meaning Equinox sales significantly underperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
The 82 percent drop in Chevy Equinox sales during Q4 2021 is the direct result of production being hit hard by the microchip shortage, idling the three plants that produce the Bow Tie brand’s best-selling crossover for much of 2021. That resulted in nearly non-existent inventory this past October, with just 1,000 units available nationwide at the time. Production was originally scheduled to restart on October 4th before being pushed back to October 15th and then delayed again to November 1st.
Just this past month, General Motors announced that it will increase production of the Equinox and Terrain in Mexico as part of a new manufacturing strategy for the GM San Luis Potosà plant. Going forward, we expect Equinox sales to increase as production ramps back up and inventory channels begin to be filled. It’s also worth noting that the 2022 Equinox is slightly more affordable than the outgoing 2021 model.
With an eye toward the future, GM announced the first-ever 2024 Chevy Equinox EV along with a wealth of new all-electric vehicles during the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. The upcoming Equinox electric is slated to launch during the 2023 calendar year in both LT and sporty RS trim levels. Already, though, Stellantis revealed its first battery-electric Jeep this month as a direct rival to other future small GM electric crossovers like the Equinox EV.

2026 Chevy Equinox Doesn’t Offer A Trailering Package Yet
Comments
Thanks for the good news. -Jonah J. Jameson.
I am a Chevy guy true and true but I can see why the Equinox does not sell well… It’s because of the lack of a second engine option who wants an RS model Equinox that’s slower then a three cylinder Trailblazer! Until GM fixes this issue the current Equinox will be a dud… Better off looking at the Buick Envision even though it’s more money it’s a much better vehicle with better engine options.
Where will the EV Equinox be built?
Another former best seller for GM that they basically let become uncompetitive unless you like low budget rentals. Blame the lack of production all you want but the equinox was loosing ground way before that due to typical GM management decisions of reducing vehicle and powertrain options .
They do it by offering what the customers want to buy, along with reputations that – whether warranted or not – are very good.
Decontent the vehicle, create inventory shortages, chasing people to other brands, but when the new ev model arrives, people will be busting the doors down. I saw a new white one with black trim, vent shades and a hood bug guard the other day. It looked sharp.
If the new one has the same rather gutless drivetrain, the sales will prove disappointing at best. GM / Chevy loyalists may buy, but the general public has had a taste of the competition, and may not come back.
I am – more or less – brand agnostic. I used to buy a lot of GM, not out of loyalty, but, they offered what I wanted. They no longer do, so I went with a brand that did at the time I bought.
Agreed I’ve had previous GM suvs that offered what I wanted in terms of performance and styling… TBSS and GMC Typhoon! Now GM has nothing I would consider buying which is why I left the brand. And seems that if I want to replace my V it won’t be at Cadillac or GM fir the same reason.
Was able to buy one of the limited 2022 Equinox LT available vehicles in December. What a disappointment this version of the Equinox… very poor build quality, de- contented, poor color match on both front and rear fascia. Poor rear door fit…. new engine tune results in noisy vibrations in the dash…. think twice before buying one of these.
As an owner of a 2019 and a 2020 NOX, GM continues to disappoint me with their sales strategy. All the Chevy/GMC dealers in my area stock the high profit “BIG BUCKS” trucks and SUV’S. It’s always truck month and 72- or 84-month payments. Hasn’t GM figured out that we have an energy crisis? WE need some energy efficient vehicles. I have both a 2.0 and a 1.5. Checking both with pencil and paper calculations, the 2.0 gets 20 around town and the 1.5 gets 24. Keep in mind that the 2.0 runs best on premium fuel. Today, regular in my town is $3.99 and premium is $4.25. If you think this gas crisis will end in a month then you are a dreamer. People are going to the foreign labels because they get better mileage and have more power. GM is so EV oriented that they forgot about the people who can’t afford an EV or have a place to charge.
Soon, the big trucks and other gas eating monsters will fill the lots as unsold. I’m old and went thru the 70’s and 80’s where the smaller the motor the better. BTW, in 1970, I bought a new Pontiac GTO. Sticker was just a bit less than $4K. It averaged 13mpg on a trip. A year later when the gasoline prices started to increase, a dealer offered me $1500 on a trade. He told me that he couldn’t give that gas hog away.
So all the dreams of a racing NOX may be history. My 1.5 turbo is fine. Some of you better look back at history. History will show you why Toyota and Honda know what they are doing.
Good luck to Plug -it-in-Mary!
A bigger 4 cyl and no turbo. Premium is and always has been about a dollar more a gallon around here, chi.
GM is loosing another segment. This is same happened in sedans also.
RAV4 is selling crazy and Toyota has hybrid, prime models in market and ev is scheduled. GM thinks they can get customers back but new generation is behind brands like Tesla Toyota Honda etc .
GM really need a better leadership with a view of customers
Unni… First of all this is not the Brand New Generation Equinox it’s a “REFRESH” from the 2018 model year Equinox, second the new Generation is coming with the Equinox EV and new generation Equinox in 2024 or 2025, Third the Buick Envision which competes with the Equinox is selling very well which might be why GM does not see fit to pour money into a more powerful Equinox that hardly anyone would buy when your approaching Buick Envision prices for a 2.0 Equinox Premier model, fourth GM’s brands are different then Toyota or Telsa… While Toyota has Toyota and Lexus they don’t really have a budget brand like Chevy as you can load up a Toyota to almost Lexus levels… At GM if you want that kind of luxury you go with Buick or Cadillac the same for Telsa they are a luxury brand and should not be competing with Chevy what’s the cheapest Telsa like $50,000 dollars, and finally my friends wife owns a 2018 Equinox with the 1.5 Turbo engine and she loves the fuel mileage, it carts her two kids around and plenty of groceries…in other words not everyone needs the top of the line luxury model!
I respectfully agree and disagree. For a customer it doesn’t matter its a refresh or new. The key here is market share on a prominent sales segment .
Second, the customer who considers equinox will consider ford, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai (yes now a days they are big players and Kia too ), jeep . Please note they dont consider Buick or GMC or say Cadillac because they look for a mass model compact SUV. Now they come in look and they compare. They dont have a mindset i need to go to Buick or Cadillac and this is why GM has high country models. Again 3.6 engine is good but as per statistics less than 2 or 3 % looks for it. Even though customer dont want the expensive version, they consider starting those features or they move to that if they really like.
Now a days green view goes high so the best for GM was to have Voltec in equinox as they had hybrid Malibu. So it was easy for GM to have that power-train on Equinox or Blazer or/and Traverse. Most time the truth is GM starts a product early and shut that segment off before main stream catches with it ( example 2 mode hybrids for SUVs and Trucks, Voltec ) and good products there give customers confidence and they move to next product. example i own a Toyota sienna hybrid and i am happy on that purchase, it gives me compact car economy for a 7 seat minivan and has AWD by having rear motor (e-awd). I get Cruze eco fuel economy for my van even on city drive.
Sad part is now this hot segment, GM is competing with Mitsubishi. Lets see how this all end but once lost customer is tough to get back unless they put a real competitive product. I know it was COVID times but others are having waiting queues.
Unni apparently you didn’t read my entire comment correctly… AHEM… the Chevy Equinox in top trim with the bigger engine was approaching Buick Envision level prices so yes people do cross shop the Encore GX, Envision, heck my wife and I went last year to a Buick dealership to look at a 2017 Chevy Traverse LTZ then we looked at a 2019 Buick Enclave Essence the Buick was the same price plus it was two years newer then the traverse with lower mileage.. we went with The Buick Enclave! My point is it’s all fine and good for Chevy to offer an equinox hybrid, EV or more powerful turbo but when your getting into Buick prices or perhaps the new Blazer BTW the Blazer sells like hotcakes and the Blazer is giving the Equinox In house competition, not everyone buys a Blazer RS many go for the cheaper Blazer which does not cost much more then the Equinox fully loaded… Then on the other end you have the new Trailblazer which sells really well and is more in house competition for the Equinox and the Trailblazer is not much smaller then the Equinox eithe for less money. Either Chevy overhauls the Equinox or gets rid of the nameplate either way what GM is saying by letting it go like this is that really don’t need the model anymore remember when the Equinox was first produced it was the only crossover Chevy or GM had… Those days are long over as not only does Toyota and other car makes compete with equinox but it also has GM in house competition!
My comment will be based off some of the other comments above:
People bi–h about the lack of engine options, yet people were not buying the diesel or 2.0L in any numbers enough to continue offering them. I now own a Chevy Malibu with the 1.5L and there is nothing wrong with that engine. It wasn’t that long ago that 160 + HP and over 185 lbs torque were rather good. Why the heck do people think that they need so much power? Where are you going that you must drive that fast and have that much power? I see way too many people out where I live that are driving like maniacs just because they have the power to do so.
For those constantly complaining about the interiors, take a darn long look at the junk coming out of the Toyota stores. How can people complain so much about some plastics in a GM product and then suddenly have amnesia when they look at a Toyota or Nissan or Honda? It’s sickening to constantly read the whining.
Lastly, someone above mentioned how so many are going to foreign labels because of better quality and MPG. I work at a store that has both Volvo and Mazda. The CX5 Mazda is the closest to the Equinox. The materials are no better in the CX5 than in the Chevy and if you think these other brands are getting better MPG, you are very wrong. In real world driving, the CX5 (non-turbo) is lucky to average 25 mpg. I’ve had people come in red-hot mad because they got the CX5 for the better MPG’s only to be quite disappointed with the real world results. On top of that, the CX5 (non-turbo) is a gutless wonder. I just delivered one about 50 miles from the dealership and every time I drive one I’m reminded of why I like my GM products so much more.
Most cars nowadays have a gimmick – something you can brag to your friends about. For some, it’s a hybrid (good MPG). For others it’s electric (saving the planet). For some, it’s that massive engine in the front (It’s a V8, you know!). For others who are dirt poor, it’s the insanely cheap deal they got. The humble Terrain once had a gimmick (fastest CUV in class), but now it doesn’t. It’s just a Terrain. It doesn’t save you money on fuel, nor is it super cheap, nor does it go really fast or save the planet. It’s just a Terrain.
I was in the grocery store earlier today. I noticed a new, expensive treat that was marshmallow covered in salt, caramel, and dark chocolate. It was sitting next to the box of plain banana chips. More people have been deciding that they want something decadent. It’s just as true in cars as it is in candy.
@Dan Berning, I see people especially in modern pickup truck, CUV, and SUV vehicles going way over the speed limit and tailgating often…I am often being tailgated for going five miles over the 55MPH speed limit it’s insane. I live in northern NJ and in the winter time I constantly see pickup plow truck drivers going like 55MPH in a snow storm I guess that next driveway is worth risking their and my life over. I can put it into context I am 43 years old and when I was growing up in the 80’s and 90’s pickup trucks and SUV’s where not fast vehicles they where farm, road maintenance, plow or any other type of work truck or off road trucks those where cool back then. The car companies and I mean ALL the car companies from GM to Toyota have made huge profits off of giving pickups and SUV’s leather interiors, Acers of chrome…yep the 1950’s chrome is alive and well on some modern pickups, giant wheels and tires, ever bigger and more powerfull engines and some cost the price of a small house…then and I love this part the owners complain about the fuel mileage in a V8 pickup or SUV…and more then half the time the usable bed is empty. I currently own a 2010 Chevy Equinox LTZ 3.0 V6 and I love the vehicle the gas mileage is ok not the greatest but I sure am glad I didn’t get the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder that had a boat load of problems because if the 4 cylinder was a better engine I would have bought that engine. Now then I still feel that this is America and people should be able to buy what they want and drive what vehicle they choose but please people can’t we leave Nascar to the professionals on the race track!
