Chevy Corvette Sales Decimate Segment During Q4 2021

Chevy Corvette sales decreased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico during the fourth quarter of 2021.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Despite the 8 percent drop, Chevy Corvette sales in the U.S. continued to absolutely dominate the premium sports car segment during Q4 2021. In fact, the Corvette decisively topped the podium as sales accounted for well over half of total segment sales, nearly 3,300 units more than all the other entries combined.

Chevy’s mid-engine sports car was followed, as before, by Porsche’s two entries, the 911 (née Carrera/Targa) and 718 (née Cayman/Boxster), to finish out the podium, while the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT took fourth place. The 911 posted a 36 percent increase in sales to 3,313 units, the 718 took a 24 percent decrease in sales to 1,127 units, while the AMG GT saw a 67 percent decrease in sales to 303 units. The Audi R8 (see running Audi R8 sales) took fifth place with an 18 percent decrease in sales to 153 units. The rest of the field, combined, sold less units than the R8.

However, we should note – as we usually do – that most other segment contenders in this segment cost significantly more than the Corvette and, as a result, these higher-priced rivals typically see lower sales volumes.

Combining Porsche’s two entries, the 911 and 718 lines, gives the German automaker a 33 percent segment share with 4,440 sales – a little over half the sales volume of the Vette.

TOTAL -83.17% 308 1,830 -48.59% 3,801 7,393

In regard to Mercedes-Benz’s three entries, the AMG GT made the only difference, with the SL-Class and SLC-Class combined counting for a mere 5 units sold between them. That’s a result of the SL-Class undergoing a generational changeover, while the SLC-Class being discontinued.

Clearly, Porsche provides the only noteworthy competition in this segment.

The premium sports car segment contracted 12 percent to 13,306 units in Q4 2021, meaning that Corvette sales outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

With the Corvette C8 having ushered the long-awaited mid-engine Vette almost three years ago, GM still can’t build the sports car fast enough to meet demand. Incidentally, this has been the case since the introduction of the C8. Corvette sales have remained at the top of their segment, with the 2022 Chevy Corvette being ranked among the top ten fastest-selling vehicles in January 2022.

The 2023 Chevy Corvette will be introduced this spring as the fourth model year of the Corvette C8, bringing with it the new 2023 Corvette Z06. The track beast will be available as either a hardtop coupe (with a manually-removable roof panel) or the hard-top convertible, just like the Corvette C8 Stingray.

The heart of the new Z06 is the naturally aspirated 5.5L V8 LT6 gasoline engine, which is the highest-horsepower atmospheric V8 ever fitted to a production vehicle. With a low weight, flat-plane crankshaft, a dual-overhead cam setup, and an all-aluminum block, the LT6 produces 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, with redline set at a screaming 8,600 rpm. Output is routed to the rear wheels through Tremec’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and 5.56 final drive ratio, which is shorter than that of the Corvette C8 Stingray.

In addition, Chevy will also introduce the Corvette 70th anniversary edition to celebrate 70 years of Corvette. The package will be available on both the Z06 and Stingray models.

Other C8 models still on the way include the Corvette C8 E-Ray (replacing the initially planned Corvette C8 Grand Sport), Corvette C8 ZR1, and Corvette C8 Zora.

Finally, Chevy designed the new Corvette to compete on the world stage, with the C8 being the first ever Vette to be officially produced in right-hand layout. That means the Corvette is truly bound for the world, with models specced for Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, Switzerland, and even China, as GM establishes a new imported vehicle business there to sell Corvettes, among other performance cars and trucks.

The future definitely seems bright for the Corvette, and we expect Corvette sales to continue dominating the segment and growing as a result of record demand.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Chevy Corvette sales for Q4 2020, unless noted otherwise
  • There were 78 selling days in Q4 2021 and 79 selling days in Q4 2020
  • Corvette sales figures include all Corvette body styles, variants, trim levels and packages
  • Sales figures for Lotus, Jaguar and Maserati not available as those manufacturers do not break out information on a model basis

  2. Very poor journalism. The article says nothing about the MSRP’s of the other vehicles nor does it mention anything about production volumes

“However, we should note – as we usually do – that most other segment contenders in this segment cost significantly more than the Corvette and, as a result, these higher-priced rivals typically see lower sales volumes.”

That said, when the Porsche 911 is the most cross-shopped vehicle with the C8 Stingray, the price takes a backseat. It’s clear that C8 buyers can more than afford a 911, but are choosing the Corvette:

    1. I suppose it could if they were willing to lose money on every unit. The thing is gm is allocating chips primarily to what makes money, suv’s, trucks and vettes. Smart.

      1. Not smart, the Vette can die today and it won’t effect GM’s bottom line. Yes the trucks/SUVs is running the company, not to mention international markets. If they put the same effort into the sedan lineup as they did Vette, buyers wouldn’t even think about buying Korean and make the Japanese and Euros sweat..

          1. Sure, the Type R would out pace your primered ’84 Vette . You made a key point “halo car” as in not needed, as said GM needs to put more effort into a practical sedan and get an higher ROI then a limited sport car..

  5. I love my 2021 C8. My wife preferred the Porsche 718 Boxster and also got a 2021. They too are quite hard to get, but we managed to find a dealer with an unfilled allocation. The biggest difference between the Corvette and the Porsche is that as hard as the Porsche is to get – Porsche dealers are still selling at MSRP with no markups.

  6. I got my 2021 C8 at MSRP, which really does make it a bargain. I waited a year from order to delivery.
It checks all the boxes for performance, driving excitement, etc, , except one. I thought it would be easier to get a date. But when you are old and ugly even
a pretty car will not be enough bait.

  7. C8 in any iteration is a rarity in my demographic. (Upstate NY) I have only seen 3 in traffic since launch. Chevy Man hit the nail on the head. If you have any negative feedback for what is arguably the industry sucker punch to ALL sports car developers today, you are an agent who’s job is to deflect attention away from the elephant in the room or just a troll who probably drives something a lot less impressive than the lowliest of sports cars which the C8 is far from imo.
