C8 Corvette Driver Attempts To Overtake Three Cars, Plows Into Toyota Pickup

A C8 Corvette Stingray driver attempted to pass a line of three slower-moving vehicles before crashing into a Toyota pickup in Marin County, California this week, sending three people to the hospital.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s Marin branch, the driver of the white C8 Corvette Stingray was travelling on a two-lane road in West Marin last Saturday when they attempted to pass a line of three slower-moving vehicles. At the same time, the driver of a Toyota pickup at the front of the line was slowing down and about to make a left-hand turn into a parking area. The Vette, approaching at a high rate of speed, then t-boned the Toyota as it made the left-hand turn, causing the pickup truck to roll on its side.

Three occupants of the Toyota truck were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries, CHP said, while the Corvette driver was treated on scene with minor injuries. Drugs and/or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in this collision, responding officers reported, although the driver of the Chevrolet was issued a citation for an unsafe driving maneuver. While the road they were travelling on had a dotted dividing line, CHP will tell any driver that attempting to pass three cars at once is not advisable.

“If you are travelling in West Marin, please remember to drive with caution and care,” CHP said of this rather dangerous crash. “Get to where you are going safely. There’s no need to rush.”

NASCAR Cup Series cars race at Sonoma in 2019

It seems as though the driver of this C8 Corvette Stingray wanted to experience the power of their mid-engine sports car’s naturally aspirated 6.2L LT2 V8 engine, but they could have picked a much better place to do this. The world-class Sonoma Raceway is only a short drive from Marin County and features a 12-turn road course with multiple layouts/configurations, along with a drag strip and even a karting facility for kids. Something tells us that if you can afford a brand-new Corvette, you can also afford a track day paddock pass. Lesson learned, we hope.

    1. And the Tesla Model S Plaid is way more crazy than the Vette.
When can we start banning these weapons of mass destruction? Or at the very least have strict licensing requirements.

          1. When you give a reckless driver a 1000 horsepower car without any licensing or restrictions you are asking for trouble.
We require special licensing for school buses, semi trucks, dump trucks, limos yet we can’t keep the public safe by requiring special licensing for superfast cars?

        3. Just about everyone in Marin County’s morally bankrupt and morally grandstanding. What this devolving state needs is strict driver’s education and licensing standards on par with Autobahning Europe. Most of the lunatics driving in this state have no business holding a driver’s license. They give them out like participation trophies. Get the overpaid morons and lollygaggers off our roads. It’ll help more than anything else to achieve this one party state’s signature lofty climate change goals as well. Win-win.

  10. Great advice about recommending established race tracks for performance driving, instead of public highways. Although, in this case, it seems the Corvette driver was passing legally, and the Toyota driver made an unsafe left turn. Maybe CHP tagged the wrong driver. I doubt CA law puts a limit on how many cars drivers can legally pass.

    1. They Charged the wrong guy for sure . If you cannot Pass 3 Cars how can you pass a Truck pulling 2 Trailers. Come on .

    2. There is things we don’t know. Was the truck driver using his turn signal? If so, then the vette should have seen that and hit the brakes, blown horn, etc. Seems like it could have been avoided.

  12. The driver of the Corvette was passing in a “passing zone”. Save your outrage for those making an illegal pass. It is an unfortunate accident. I hope everyone is ok.

    1. An “ACCIDENT” insights nobody was at fault. This is clearly not the case here! The C8 driver was totally at fault here and should be punished to the full extent of the law as I’m sure the insurance for the driver of the Toyota truck will seek damages for pain and suffering, loss of work and replacement of their vehicle. Settlement will probably be north of 6 figures if not 7.
I get the excitement of having a C8 and feel like you can pass almost anybody on the road, but as the saying goes… “with great power comes great responsibility!’ I think anyone who purchases a high speed racer should be required to pass an on track safety course before they get the keys.
Speed kills and stupid is as ramped as the spread of Covid-19. Take your time and arrive alive!

      1. So, by your statement, the owner of any vehicle capable of going over 85 mph maybe? Not sure, but let’s just say 5 over the maximum speed limit in the USA (I just threw out 85, I think the limit is higher out west than more east). Problem is, that would indeed include my one ton pickup and most cars I know of. If you want to raise the threshold for “training” to say 100 mph, that would have to assume that one cannot be an idiot at 85 or 90 mph. HMMMMM.

      2. 7 figures? That’s one of the problems today, all these sue-ass happy people. The truck driver also has some responsibility in this, did he have on his turn signal? Did he check his side view mirror before he turned? The vette was passing legally, so we don’t know all the facts. So it does seem to fit the definition of an “ACCIDENT”

        1. The truck was in front f the line the VETTE had no reason to pass until safe to do so.
          VETTE definitely at fault

          1. Maybe it was safe until the Toyota turned into the lane the vette was driving in.

  13. Anyone can make the same “mistake” in a Subaru.
Pickup was broadsided; what does that imply?
Nice to know that Corvette is so crash worthy.
Track fees are one smallish item; then there’s helmets, track day insurance, membership fees, etc. owning a moderately expensive car doesn’t mean you can afford track laps.
C8, even at inflated market prices, can cost less than an expensive pickup truck and easily less than two run of the mill pickup trucks.

  14. Funny how the boneheads always blame the vehicle or the weapon. It’s not the Vettes fault the guy t-boned the truck. Don’t start blaming the car…

  15. So the driver of the truck is not responsible for checking his driver’s side mirror to make sure it is safe to make the alleged LHT across a lane of traffic? If it was double yellow, no problem. But it’s not, this is on the truck driver IMHO…

  16. The Toyota driver should be ticketed for destroying this Vette.

  17. Understood the Vette was speeding. Very clearly few here understand the law/onus is on the left hand turning vehicle to make sure the path fore and aft is clear for making the turn which the Toyota unobjectively failed to do. Charges should be laid for improper left turn.

  20. STUPID MORON ! This is what makes us Corvette owners look bad and have to suffer from higher insurance rates . I hope those that he hit sues his ass and his insurance company cancels him and ruins his driving record along with his credit rating !

  21. Nobody making a left turn like that is expecting a car coming from behind.
A check of the left mirror would show nothing, then start the turn and the car going very fast would
arrive. Bad luck for pickup driver.

Vette driver probably should have sensed a problem/warning when the cars ahead really slowed down,
as the pickup slowed to turn.

I NEVER drive faster than I can stop in an emergency, which is harder to do in a new C8 because it is so darn fast.

  23. That left turn while passing a pack – YEP! A serious danger and I have to be careful that the leader of the slow pack is not about to maneuver. You have to be on High Alert when driving a vette.

  26. I don’t see any roads coming in from the left. Imho Here’s what happened: The Vette driver pulled out to pass the line. The pick up driver saw him in his side mirror and thought he’d teach him a lesson by swerving out to cut him off. Left turn is bullshot.

  28. I was having a great day in my Vette on a clear, straight 2 lane road and decided to pass 2 slower vehicles. As I overtook both vehicles at about 86 in a 65 zone and merged back to the right lane to decel, my rear view mirror shortly thereafter indicated a very angry looking Dodge Charger on my tail with red/blue lights on. You know the rest.
