First introduced for the 2013 model year, the 2022 Buick Encore represents the tenth model year for the first-generation crossover nameplate, arriving with just a few small changes and updates over the preceding 2021 model year. Now, however, GM Authority has exclusively learned that the Buick Encore will be discontinued after the 2022 model year.
According to GM Authority sources, production of the Buick Encore is scheduled to end in the third quarter of the 2022 calendar year. Production takes place at the GM Bupyeong factory in South Korea.
As it is, sales of the Buick Encore have tapered off since the launch of the Buick Encore GX for the 2020 model year. Despite sharing similarities with regard to styling and naming conventions, the Buick Encore GX and Buick Encore are two entirely different vehicles, with the “subcompact-plus” Encore GX slotting in between the subcompact Encore and the compact Envision.
With regard to sales, the Buick Encore was down nearly 52 percent last year, with 20,072 units sold, as compared to the 41,752 units sold in 2020. By comparison, sales of the Buick Encore GX increased nearly 59 percent, up to 71,247 units from 44,841 units in 2020.

As it is, the discontinuation of the Buick Encore was part of General Motors’ plan all along. As GM Authority covered previously, the Buick Encore trim level lineup was streamlined recently recently, with just a single trim level offered for the 2022 model year, namely the Preferred. For the 2021 model year, the Buick Encore was available in two trims, including the base-level and Preferred, while four trims were offered for the 2020 and 2019 model years, and six trims were offered for the 2018 model year.
With the discontinuation of the Buick Encore, General Motors will use the extra capacity to expand Trailblazer production.
The Buick Encore is powered by the turbocharged 1.4L I4 LE2 gasoline engine, which produces 155 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Under the skin, the Encore rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform.
