2022 GMC Terrain Gets Expanded Availability Of Cold Air Grille Shutter

The 2022 GMC Terrain is the fifth model year for the latest second-gen nameplate, introducing a model refresh, also known as a mid-cycle enhancement or MCE. Now, GM Authority has learned that the 2022 GMC Terrain will include the Cold Air Grille Shutter feature as standard on all units sold in additional U.S. states.

The Cold Air Grille Shutter feature is tagged with RPO code VRI, and works to keep the vehicle working at peak performance by reducing ice and moisture accumulation in freezing conditions. The feature incorporates shape memory alloy springs that react to the outside air temperature, closing the shutter in freezing conditions.

The Cold Air Grille Shutter will now be included as standard on all 2022 GMC Terrain units sold in the following U.S. states:

  • Alaska
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
  • Wisconsin

Previously, the Cold Air Grille Shutter was included on units shipped to Montana, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

In all other U.S. states, the Cold Air Grille Shutter is bundled with the engine block heater, tagged with RPO code K05. Meanwhile, in Canada, the Cold Air Grille Shutter was previously included on all orders shipped to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon. Now, however, the feature is included as standard on all orders across all provinces.

The expanded availability of this feature mirrors similar availability for the 2022 Chevy Equinox.

Notably, the Cold Air Grille Shutter differs from Active Aero Shutters, which provide enhanced aerodynamic efficiency, thus reducing fuel consumption.

The GMC Terrain was previously slated to receive a model refresh for the 2021 model year, but due to complications stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the refresh was instead pushed back to the 2022 model year.

Under the hood, the 2022 GMC Terrain features the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine, which is rated at 170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. Under the body panels, the GMC Terrain rides on the GM D2 platform, while production takes place at the GM San Luis Potosí factory in Mexico.

  1. Great gm including the cold air shutter to the terrain as a standard item in all the terrain shipped across the states and all the provinces across Canada wish they can add the 2.0 l engine and make that standard too !!!

  3. Since they stubbornly refuse to offer any power upgrade on these how about a revised 1.5T that at least tries to compete with other 1.5 engines like Honda’s 192 HP varient or Nissan’s 201 horse engine. Putting only the 170 horse 1.5 in the expensive SLT and Denali trims is a joke!

    1. Totally agree 1.5 engine with 170 hp is a joke specially in a terrain denali other brands coming with same engine type but with more hp at least give us the equivalent hp output like other manufacturers like Nissan and Honda but I do have to say at least gm is staying with 9 speed automatic over the c v t transmission which I personally think is way better choice then imports .
