Nearly a year after introducing the updated 2021 model-year lineup, General Motors has just officially launched the updated 2022 Chevy Onix in China, where the second-generation model made its global debut in spring 2019. The third model year of the successful subcompact sedan is now on sale in the Asian country, with minor changes to bring it up to date with customer preferences.
The updated 2022 Chevy Onix for the Chinese market maintains the exact same exterior and interior design, while retaining the latest powertrain upgrade introduced for the previous model year. In fact, the 2022 Onix manufactured in that country includes only small configuration and equipment changes.
Notably, the Chinese-market 2022 Chevy Onix lineup expands from three to four available variants spread across the two trim levels that have existed since its introduction, LT and Redline. An LT version equipped with the more powerful engine and six-speed automatic transmission has been added to the mix.
As such, the new 2022 Chevy Onix LT is positioned between the entry-level version – renamed from LT Enjoy Edition to LT Joy – and the base Redline. Cosmetically, the new LT has a traditional exterior with single-tone bodywork, 16-inch unpainted aluminum wheels, and a gold Chevrolet Bow Tie, setting it apart from the base LT Joy with its smaller wheels as well as the blacked-out finish of the range-topping Redline variants.
Mechanically, the updated 2022 Chevy Onix features a naturally aspirated 1.3L engine developing 106 horsepower and 96 pound-feet of torque, mated to a five-speed manual transmission, that’s exclusive to the LT Joy. Meanwhile, the new LT and the two Redline variants are equipped with the turbocharged 1.0L engine, developing 123 horsepower and 133 pound-feet of torque, and mated to a six-speed automatic.
The updated 2022 Chevy Onix is now available for sale throughout the brand’s dealer network in China, with upgraded features, such as an all-new Chevrolet Infotainment system exclusive to the Asian country that offers a high level of connectivity, as well as over-the-air updates in the Redline Plus. Here are the starting prices of the four 2022 Onix variants in China:
- 2022 Onix LT Joy: 83,900 CNY (about $13,250 USD at the current exchange rate)
- 2022 Onix LT: 89,900 CNY ($14,200 USD)
- 2022 Onix Redline: 96,900 CNY ($15,300 USD)
- 2022 Onix Redline Plus: 99,900 CNY ($15,800 USD)

I like this a lot. I’m glad I was able to get my sonic before they canceled it. This is a great looking sedan.
Imagine they can put it into one of the Mexican factories, this alone can replace Sonic and Spark…
Onix has also been produced in Mexico since 2020 to serve the domestic market and region.
That would be a good idea actually. Where is the spark made? Im still of the belief that sedan sales would of picked up for gm again had they kept either the sonic, cruise, or spark. I think this would be a good replacement
The Spark is Korean. It’s the model just below the Aveo (Sonic here).
We’re probably never going to get these kinds of cars again. They’d all have to be made outside the US and imported because they are too small and inexpensive to be profitable if made here.
Can I buy the onix then import it here to the states?
do not understand this red thing on wheels … what is that for ? seems unnecessary totally…
Indeed the 4th pic in blue seems better with wheels,
do not understand which update was this either, seems the same
——- what car needed was correction on A pillar cut, seems wrong made
——- the area of fog lamp must still be corrected too… it lacks the fog lamp
——- the lower border of decklid must match the bumper surface too
——- in interior, could be simpler, straight, really we here do not need this tablet
Actually, I think this is a pretty nice looking car, especially for that segment.
As far as the display, you’re going to need one in any modern car, or nobody would buy it.
I think it’s time to bring back some cars to Canada and not just China and India .
We could have the Onix with a 1.5 L ENGINE plus please change the Trailblazer and Buick Encore also 1.5 L get the 3 Cylinders out.
PLEASE consider a Cadillac XT3 with a 1.5 Turbo ( Brand New Cadillac) now we wood have from XT3 to XT6 now 4 choices .
Has anyone ever driven a GEM platform car? I’m familiar with the development, how it was first explained as based on Gamma but now linked to VFF Architecture, but am curious how drive dynamics compare a Delta-based Cruze, a VFF Encore, or offerings by Kia, Honda, ect?
Onix could replace Sonic. GEM Encore if Federalized with plush interior materials would be a beautiful addition to Buick stable. GM still has too many platforms with a footprint that keeps shrinking! FCA would have built a freaking Cherokee, Dart, and Pacifica on GEM given their abilities to customize and stretch a dollar!
You know, I like this a lot. America doesn’t have enough no-frills, practical little cars anymore. Drop a more powerful engine like the 1.5L turbo one into it and I think it could do pretty well.
