Refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra To Get Limited Heated Steering Wheel Availability

The refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will have limited availability for the heated steering wheel option for the foreseeable future, GM Authority has learned.

In the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, a heated steering wheel (RPO code KI3) is typically standard across all trim levels – save for the entry-level Sierra Pro work truck. However, certain units will be built without a heated steering wheel from the start of production due to the semiconductor chip shortage.

However, certain variants of the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will be built with a heated wheel, despite this chip shortage-related change. This includes the off-road-focused AT4X, the Denali (only when equipped with either the 6.2L L87 V8 or 3.0L I-6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engines) as well as the Denali Ultimate. These three trim levels are the priciest in the Sierra’s lineup, so it stands to reason why they would receive a heated steering wheel amid the shortage, whereas other trim levels wouldn’t.

Production of the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will begin at the GM Silao Assembly facility in Mexico on February 21st, while the GM Fort Wayne Assembly facility in Indiana will begin building the refreshed premium truck on March 14th.

The refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 introduced a long list of changes and updates over the outgoing, pre-refresh model, including revised interior and exterior styling, a new available 13.4-inch infotainment display and the addition of available hands-free Super Cruise with trailering capability, among more. The powertrain lineup remains largely the same, with one of the few major changes being the addition of the updated turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, which now produces 23 percent more torque for an impressive total of 430 pound-feet.

  1. Last year I bought a 2021 Tahoe Z71 without the heated steering wheel. I really really miss it!! Do you know if there will be a retrofit available so I can have it added to my vechicle ?

    1. Your Tahoe should be equipped with the actual heating element, it’s just missing the chips, dealers are supposedly able to install at no cost once they become available. You should’ve gotten some sort of credit approximately $50 for the omitted feature which I would assume you pay back once equipped

  2. Have the Silverado refresh started earlier at some plants? I thought I read somewhere the Silverado will go into production first, maybe like a couple of weeks before Sierra.

  3. GM speak: “2022 GMC Sierra To GET Limited Heated Steering Wheel Availability”. It does not GET anything whatsoever you GM fraudsters. It just loses a chip and that makes heated steering wheel impossible.

    1. Fraudsters? LOL. Everything is there for the heated steering wheel. Just like the heated rear seats. They just don’t have the actual chip to turn them on and off.. as soon as the chip is available, they’ll be sent to GM dealers to be installed for no charge.. and for the slight inconvenience, GM is offering slight discounts..

  4. I live in Colorado. Taking this or heated seats out of my vehicle is an absolute no go for me.

    1. lol theyre not taking anything out of these trucks… the heating elements and switches are there.. they’re just waiting on the actual chip that turns it on and off.. which GM dealers will install for free once they’re available…

  5. How come dealers have these vehicles in stock but GM Authority is saying they’re not in production yet?

    1. No dealer had the refreshed models on their lot. They definitely are not on the lot. You’re probably seeing the 2022 limited models.

      1. Don’t waste your time on the limited models since none will have the updated 13.4 screen. It’s just a way to sell more ’21s as a stop gap.

        1. Interior is better in the refresh, but the exterior is better on the limited imo. I could get past the exterior and went with limited. Too much grill on the refresh.

  6. I thought the chip supply was getting better. Trucks costing $45,000 plus and no heated steering wheel. Come on!

    1. Elon Musk has plenty of chip. Maybe GM could buy some from him.

      1. Sure he has plenty of chips.. thats his business.. he has a tech company that builds mediocre cars as a side project..
