LS-Swapped Geo Metro Is In Need Of A Brave New Owner

A 1994 Geo Metro that has been transformed into a mid-engine, GM LS V8-powered sports car was recently listed for sale via Facebook Marketplace in Wisconsin.

Whoever decides to buy this mad homebrew creation is rather brave, in our opinion, as we can’t imagine it’s very easy to control with its rearward weight bias and rather skinny rear tires – not to mention the significant amounts of torque on offer from the naturally aspirated 5.3L LS4 V8 engine.

According to the listing, this car is based on a regular 1994 Geo Metro hatchback, which has been modified with a custom tube chassis support for the front-mounted fuel cell.  Other key parts include a 4T80E four-speed transaxle, which was lifted from an unnamed Cadillac donor car, an aftermarket manumatic transmission controller and a dashboard-mounted tablet display for relaying engine speed, ground speed, water temps and other important info.

Not surprisingly, the owner/builder of this mid-engine V8 Geo (there’s a scary sequence of words) says it gets “excessive,” oversteer above 65 mph and even takes some concentration to keep the vehicle from veering out of the lane. This build definitely needs some refinement before it’s ready for a track day or a spirited drive, then, but we think this project could actually be pretty cool and fun to drive with a bit more work. Anyone familiar with other rear-wheel-drive, mid-engine hatchbacks like the Renault Clio V6 or Ford Shogun will know vehicles like this can be very fun to drive. That said, this car is listed for sale for $7,000 firm, which seems a bit steep for a backyard build that can barely drive in a straight line at highway speed.

Brave enough to drive a home-built, rear-wheel-drive V8 Geo? Check out the listing (while it’s still up) at this link.

  1. And I would suspect when it’s not oversteering, it’s understeering. Haha.

  2. I wish it was a cleaner install. I’d have loved to get my hands on it. But as is, no chance. I’ll go back to my LT4 AWD Tracker planning.

  4. Ah, HELLO…….Isn’t this supposed to be the “GM Authority”?
One would expect an authority to realize that that body stye was first available in 1995. It ran from 1995-2000.
Yet your story refers to it as a 1994, TWICE…..maybe the owner doesn’t have a good title? Maybe the author should do a bit more research? BOTH?
