General Motors unveiled the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 last year, pulling the sheets on the fully updated light duty pickup in September. Now, GM Authority has learned GM’s recommended powertrain mix for 2022 GMC Sierra SLT trim levels.
There is a total of three powertrains on offer for the 2022 GMC Sierra SLT, including the the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, rated at 355 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 383 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm, and finally, the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax, rated at 277 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm.
Accordingly, GM’s recommended powertrain mix for the 2022 GMC Sierra SLT breaks down as follows:
- 5.3L V8 L84: 60 percent
- 6.2L V8 L87: 10 percent
- 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax: 30 percent
Note that the recommended powertrain mix listed here is specific the dealer inventory, and does not apply to sold orders. It’s also worth noting that elsewhere in the lineup, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is available with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 430 pound-feet of torque 1,500 rpm, with GM only recently confirming the latter torque figure.
Under the body panels, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 rides on the GM T1 platform, while production takes place at the GM Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and the GM Silao Assembly plant in Silao, Mexico.
GM Authority also previously covered the recommended 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim level mix for dealers, breaking down the eight available trims into specific percentage values. The midrange SLT is recommended with the highest percentage of the mix at 25 percent, followed by the Denali at 23 percent, and the Elevation and AT4 both at 16 percent.

…and for automatics I hope,
0% 8 speed auto
100% 10 speed auto
I do not believe the 8 speed is used with any V8’s in the GMC lineup for 2022.
That said I’m waiting for all the hating on the 5.3. People like to bash the listed stats and how they are lower than many stats and how it compares to other V8’s even though it’s neglected all other V8’s on the market get that power on high octane.
Good to see GM pushing the 3.0 diesel, I’m 90% sure it will be what I go with. Only problem is oil selection meeting DexosD remains at just 2 I believe, and it is constantly sold out or a crazy price.
Well if you want an engine that can crest 20 MPG then the diesel is your only option according to the abysmal mileage ratings of these new trucks with all 3 available gas fired engines, even the mighty 4 cylinder! If you want a gas engine that rates over 20 highway you will need to get a RWD base 2.7 T or go to the competition which has no problem achieving between 22 and 25 highway even with 4X4 configurations.
@Andrew. What about the crazy price for Diesel fuel? Oil price for it is a minor thing.
I ordered a SLT with a diesel. I drive 30 miles each way to work and wanted something decent on gas. I don’t toe often and really just wanted a nice truck for the family. Not your typical truck guy but think I came out well with what I ordered!!
Just realised I said Toe and not Tow!! Dont kill me in the comments 🙂
he said “toe” LOL
Haha, def not a truck guy as its my first but being a homeowner in the south, its almost a right of passage to have one.
I just placed my order for the Denali with the 3.0 diesel as well. I drive about 82 miles round trip m-f. I need the good gas mileage that comes with the duramax, as well as something comfortable enough to go fishing and dirt biking with my boys.
I guess you can not get 6.6 in the 1500 because i have it in my 2500 and its great
the new gmc sierra grill is about butt ugly as it gets, ugly wheels look like they belong on a side x side. cheap ass unfinished wheel lip moldings on a 85K truck, its stupid.
No 2.7 at all for the SLT is odd.
I think the 3.0L turbo diesel is the best engine, but I am waiting on more info on the maintenance costs. If you need to tow more than what the diesel, you should seriously consider the gas powered 3/4 ton truck.
I have zero interest in any engine with any type of cylinder deactivation. GM has been building them for 15 years now, and they still have widespread issues with lifters and oil consumption. It’s a fundamentally flawed technology and I would never buy it.
So I would get the diesel or just get the new Tundra.
I wonder if production has actually begun yet or not. still no damn configurator tells me that design and supply issues are crippling efforts to begin production
@JJ production has definitely already begun. I’m at 3300 already. My target production week “tpw” is 23Mar22.
Great to hear!!!!
Configurator is now live!!!!!! Awesome
jack up the diesel with the price of fuel
It’s temporary. But yeah near me it’s 30 cents more than premium
