GM To Substantially Increase GMC Hummer EV Production This Year, Sources Say

General Motors will ramp up output at its Factory Zero plant in the near future, with plans to increase production capacity for the GMC Hummer EV Pickup.

Speaking to Reuters, GM CEO Mary Barra this week outlined plans to produce 23,000 examples of the pickup, which is more than it had initially planned. GM has roughly 59,000 reservations for the GMC Hummer EV Pickup between the limited-run First Edition model (which sold out shortly after its release) and the series production EV3X, EV2Xand EV2 trim levels.

In addition to the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, the Factory Zero plant will also begin production of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV next year. GM will also build the Cruise Origin robotaxi at the Michigan facility, which is expected to enter service with the GM-owned autonomous ride-hailing firm sometime in 2023.

Speaking during the automaker’s recent fourth-quarter 2021 earnings call, GM CEO Mary Barra said the automaker hopes to sell 400,000 battery-electric vehicles before January 2024 rolls around. A decent chunk of these sales will come from pickups, including the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV, along with crossover models like the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV, 2023 Cadillac Lyriq and 2024 Chevy Equinox EV. The automaker’s new battery-electric utility van lineup, which includes the BrightDrop EV600 and smaller EV410, will also help drive EV sales in the coming years.

“Our plan creates the broadest EV portfolio of any automaker and further solidifies our path toward U.S. EV leadership by mid-decade,” Barra said in January.

Deliveries of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup began late last year and are expected to ramp up throughout 2022. All initial GMC Hummer EV Pickups are range-topping Edition 1 models, which feature virtually every available option, along with a 1,000-horsepower tri-motor powertrain.

  4. Sigh not 100k? Well looks like Barra will Axe the Hummer and build less than the demand and cry about the sales figures. Axe the model because of poor sales when in reality they decided to cancel it after running a profitability assessment and making less and less for no reason .

  6. So we have plenty of micro chips to build EV Hummers with no issues, but we have to forgo options in current vehicles because we don’t have micro chips?? Something isnt’ adding up here.

    1. 23k chips for the Hummer that you’re selling for over $100k makes sense. I bet the Escalade gets all the chips it needs as well.

    1. I would be nervous about owning those. Imagine when something breaks. How does it get fixed? Who fixes it? How do you get those parts?
