GM has committed another $25 million to its previously announced Climate Equity Fund, with the eco-friendly, socially-conscious reserve now sitting at a sizable $50 million.
The Detroit-based automaker first announced its Climate Equity Fund last June, which is described as a philanthropic fund “dedicated to helping close equity gaps in the transition to electric vehicles and other sustainable technology.” The automaker initially committed $25 million to the fund before doubling the amount to $50 million this week.
Kristen Siemen, chief sustainability officer at GM, said the larger Climate Equity Fund pool will help GM implement more inclusive solutions for a zero-emissions, carbon-neutral future.
“As the effects of climate change take hold across the globe, it has never been more urgent to ensure inclusion and equity guide our sustainable solutions,” Siemen said. “Doubling our Climate Equity Fund will help meet this urgency with deepened engagement at the community level, where we believe our support will have the greatest impact in accelerating the transition to an inclusive zero-emissions future.”
While exact details on how the Climate Equity Fund will be used have not yet been disclosed, GM says the fund will be used to support job creation in the clean energy sector in the U.S., along with sustainable transportation efforts and community climate action. The automaker also named a variety of grantees that will have access to some of the funds from the pool, including The Greening of Detroit and Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice, non-profit organizations focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters through various eco-friendly community programs.
GM says it “encourages nonprofits focused on implementing community-based solutions for a zero-emissions future,” to apply for grant funding from the Climate Equity Fund. Only U.S.-based 501c3 organizations in good standing will be considered. GM says it “prioritizes programs that benefit underserved populations and community-based organizations,” when selecting grant recipients, with projects evaluated on three key social outcomes: increasing the number of adults prepared for clean energy jobs, increasing access to more sustainable transportation and creating community-level programs aimed at mitigating local climate effects.
The Climate Equity Fund is intended to serve as a complement to the automaker’s sizable $35 billion investment in EVs and AVs, ensuring the automaker’s clean energy investments and efforts are evenly distributed across high, mid and low-income communities across the U.S.

Stop the nonsense. gm recoup your stolen BLM donation.
how are they going to prevent the copper charging cables being cut off and sold as scrap copper ??
And when they realize all this climate change pyramid building does not impact the climate one iota?
I am a Christian, and I believe if God thought we could destroy his planet with the use of fossil fuels, he would not have given them for us to use in the first place. Only God can destroy his planet, like the time Noah had to build an ark. Do you really believe that politicians are smarter than God?
Ohhh Kaaay, I am skeptical of the whole climate change crusade for many reasons, but that isn’t one of them.
GM needs to hold on to their money so they can pay their employees when they go out of business due to all EV vehicles. Only 6% of pollution comes from cars!!
the libs in the senate want to temporary cancel the gas tax till after the midterms so the price comes down. this will hurt their push for EVs. they will then raise people income taxes to make up for the lose. this is what you get when you have a politician for president instead of a businessman
Well $50 million ain’t much – but it is at least comforting to know that the Illegal Aliens flooding the southern US border will have some chargers for their ‘to be stolen’ evs..
EQUITY is a code word for equal outcomes – which is Communist – versus Equal Opportunity – which is what we supposedly used to believe in..
I love the picture of the “High Power” 2.8 kw VOLTEC charging stations (typically a WHOPPING 187 volts @ 15 amperes) refilling 2011 VOLTS at a business car port parking area…. Love those “Up to the minute” technology photos !!!!
Wow, note the foreign signage under the English signage on the Walgreens storefront. Location is supposedly in a Detroit neighborhood. What language is this? Certainly not Spanish.
