The Chevy Spark is set for discontinuation in the U.S. market following the conclusion of the 2022 model year.
GM Authority has learned that the Chevy Spark will no longer be available in the U.S. after 2022. Production of the subcompact will end on August 31st at GM’s Changwon plant in South Korea, and the final order cycle for the 2022 model will be June 16th. The facility, which was recently fitted with a new paint shop, is then scheduled to start building a new small crossover model.
Following the vehicle’s discontinuation, the least-expensive vehicle in Chevy’s U.S. lineup will be the Chevy Trax crossover, which starts at $22,595 including the destination freight charge. By comparison, a 2022 Chevy Spark LS starts at just $14,595 with DFC, making it one of the cheapest new cars on the market today.
The discontinuation of the Chevy Spark will also delete one of the few remaining vehicles in Chevy’s U.S. lineup that isn’t a truck, crossover, or SUV. With the departure of the Spark, Chevy’s only passenger-car offerings in the U.S. will be the Chevy Camaro, Chevy Corvette C8, and the Chevy Malibu sedan. The Malibu is expected to sunset around 2024, while the Camaro might disappear in 2023.
The Chevy Spark nameplate has been in production since 1998, with a total of four generations introduced over the years. The current fourth-generation vehicle received a refresh for the 2019 model year, introducing a number of changes and updates, including a restyled front fascia highlighted by projection-style headlamps, new wheel designs, LED daytime running lights on 1LT and 2LT trims, two illuminated USB ports in the cabin, and a few other alterations.
The current 2022 model year introduced three new exterior colors, namely Crimson, Blue Glow, and Nitro Yellow, replacing three outgoing colors, namely Passion Fruit, Toasted Marshmallow, and Caribbean Blue.
Motivation is sourced from the naturally aspirated 1.4L I4 LV7 gasoline engine, which is rated at 98 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard. Output is routed to the front axle by way of either a five-speed manual transmission or a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT). Under the skin is the GM Gamma 2 platform, also shared with the Chevy Trax/Tracker and Buick Encore.
