Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
The 36 percent decrease in Chevy Silverado sales during Q4 2021 places the Bow Tie brand’s full-size truck line in third place in its competitive set, behind the Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) in first (75,797 units higher than Silverado) and the Ram Pickup in second (19,240 units higher than Silverado). In fact, F-Series posted a 3.6 percent sales drop while Ram saw sales slide 16.5 percent. The Silverado’s corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra, followed the Chevy in fourth place, selling 57,638 less units than the Silverado. Sierra sales fell 26 percent during the quarter. Toyota Tundra placed fifth, with sales falling 48 percent, while Nissan Titan placed sixth with a 97 percent jump in sales volume, making it the only model in the segment to see an uptick in sales.

That equates to a combined 33 percent segment share compared to Ford’s 37 percent and Ram’s 26 percent.
Overall, the full-size pickup truck segment contracted 20 percent to 520,483 units during Q4 2021, meaning Chevy Silverado sales beat the segment average.

The GM Authority Take
The decline in Chevy Silverado sales volume during Q4 2021 and the associated drop to third place is the direct result of production interruptions of both the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups. As a reminder, production was halted for a week in August and for another week in September due to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage, which is expected to remain well into 2022. However, new models are on the way, and both should help sales improve.
The highly anticipated 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 refresh will enter full-scale production by mid-March. The refreshed 2022 Silverado features a new front fascia along along with a completely overhauled interior. Additionally, the range-topping High Country model offers GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system. It will be joined by the all-new 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 as the new flagship off-road model in the automaker’s light-duty pickup portfolio.
Incidentally, 10 days after Chevy revealed the new Silverado, Toyota revealed its all-new, 2022 Toyota Tundra. Yet, historic sales figures indicate that it will most likely not make a dent in Silverado deliveries. Weeks later, Chevy revealed its upcoming Silverado EV as the first-ever, all-electric Silverado. Set to arrive next year, the all-new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV made its big debut at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in both well-equipped RST First Edition and fleet-focused WT trim levels.
The Silverado EV engineered from the ground up to be an electric vehicle only. Rather than utilizing the automaker’s existing T1 internal combustion engine (ICE) truck platform, the Silverado EV utilizes a dedicated electric vehicle platform called BT1 that leverages the Ultium battery pack as a fundamental part of the vehicle’s structure.
The Silverado EV will compete head-to-head against the all-new 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning that debuted last May. That ought to be more of a concern for Chevrolet than the Tundra, since Ford continues to make the top-selling pickup in the U.S. and is nearly doubling production of the Lightning just as order books opened in January. Meanwhile, the Silverado EV won’t arrive until 2023, starting with the WT in the spring of 2023, followed by the fully-loaded RST First Edition in the fall of 2023.
Pickup trucks continue to be the top-selling vehicles in the Detroit Big Three’s respective portfolios, and the Bow Tie brand’s new models, including the refreshed Silverado and the Silverado EV, should go a long way to getting the nameplate out of third place in the sales ranks, so long as Chevy can keep production lines humming.

I do agree that the microchip shortage did hurt GM significantly and to be expected throughout all their brands and models.
My biggest question though was how that other automakers, like Ford and Toyota, was able to weather the microchip storm and still pull out such phenomenal sales? Was GM too slow or slower to react to the impending storm?
I am not knocking GM but it is interesting to know the reason behind it.
GM still sold more trucks in 2021 than Ford or Ram by a pretty large margin. GM just sells them under two different makes.
I think it might be how they distribute the materials. GM is still the king of large SUVs, which shares a lot of the same components as the pickups. I am guessing in order for the overall profit to do good, they might have just throw some resources on other models too
It needs to keep on hurting them. It’s a shame so many people are so blind they will pay so much money for such a mediocre truck, year after year. Times like these, people who can afford a new truck might look elsewhere based on product availability alone. I would also THINK that most gm trucks are sold on the east coast, where everyone is narrow minded and stuck in their ways. How do I know? All the rednecks come up to me and tell me they buy a chevy because their daddy did or they heard it in a country song.
Now that’s funny Josh,by the sound of things you and the word THINK never met each other..just an observation from an east coaster..Lmfao. what a dbag
East coast sucks nothing but junkies and thieves out that way.
Theives, beggars who think you owe them something for nothing, and negligent drivers. People who are so stupid all they wanna do is drive squatted chevy trucks with rap music playing, while they rear end someone because they were on their phones checking their social media.
Says the tent city coast aka west coast, at least we house our homeless instead of giving them jaywalking tickets, BTW how’s the job loss, high taxes forest fires and earthquakes working for ya?..
I live on the east coast dumb @$$. Been here my whole life and I’m tired of it. Everyone is narrow minded, stuck in their ways, and weak minded. Very few people know how laws and life work.
All of these sales charts are meaningless right now. Everyone is selling everything they can build. If your supply chain lets you build more, you sell more….period.
But, comments on here are now mainly flame trolls, have at her dummies.
“This is what happens if you don’t have da biggest V8 as standard!!” You know it’s gonna be said..
A new stat is needed..12MRA (months running average), a 20% drop for 1 week interruption in an 11 week quarter?
Seems a bit over blown. A 20% drop due to fuel spiking .60$/gallon in the quarter is a foreboding sign of a major economic hiccup.
The new 4 cyl is a beast unlike the other 4s that can not get out if their own way on the freeway.
This is true, but what is the life expectancy of a turbo. Let me answer that for you. I’d be hard pressed to believe any if them make it past 150k without replacement. Gm and for can keep their turbos. Having said that I cam already hear, but my diesel has 300k on it. Diesel engines are built a little bit differently than a gasser. So yes, they will outlast a gas motor 10 fold
It’s a beast alright- on fuel. Why they are even offering a 4 cylinder on these trucks that rates volume 4X4 models 17/20 MPG with gas prices rising every other day is comical. If literally every competitor is achieving higher combined and highway ratings with larger more powerful engines with 2-4 more cylinders is telling. Besides what could possibly go wrong with a super complex engine like the hard working 2.7 hitched to GM’s wonderous 8 speed automatic?
I personally feel GM dealers are pushing buyers to other brands. I’ve experienced horrible customer service from multiple dealers while looking for a Colorado. I’m seriously considering a Ram. Extremely disappointed.
Thats everywhere. I went to a ford dealership to look at a maverick. Got treated like a subway customer. went to a rural chevy dealership, got a traverse for less and phenomenal customer service.
Fortunately rising interest rates, $4 a gallon gasoline and the looming recession will cause the Truck market to shrink further.
The age of stoking fragile egos is coming to an end.
Yea it’s not like no luxury cars were sold during the Great Depression or large cars during the 70s or SUVs during the fiscal mess ups during the past 20 years….
Ummm Bugatti & Dusenberg would like to talk to you.
Sure, they also should talk to Benz, RR, coach made Cadillac and so on..
Hahahaha. Turdra and Titan sales for the quarter don’t even come to half the Siera sales. Hahaha.
GM just has no inventory on the lots and has been that way here for the past year. Their lots are totally empty. Both Ford and Ram were in much better shape so yes they sold more.
Not sure why GM , one of the largest companies has such a poor supply of micro chips compare to Toyota , Ford and Chrysler.
Lots for all brands are ghost towns around here.
Nutty times do hard to draw any long-term conclusions on anything. Thurs. I sold my 3 year old commuter with mucho miles for 12 per cent more than bought new. Friday I had to drive 30 miles to get my truck serviced because local dealer s were bring your own fluids due to supply chain
They had contractual Obligations to build other products.
GM still had 3 MILLION other vehicles that were not 1500s to build for US market. At 10-100 chips per I think they did a mighty good job, even if my plant was kicked for 7 months.
It’s those hideous mirrors… I have had Chevy trucks for 30 years and this generation is the ugliest. The mirrors are almost as bad as the elephant ear Dodge towing mirrors. Couple that with only making a few models with a few options and sales are down. I would have to spend 80k plus just to get a decent one and there are other options. The shortage just priced what is available out of touch for most people.
Ram not Dodge. And if you had ever towed using those mirrors you would have a whole different opinion.
My personal opinion… I have been a faithful chevrolet owner for almost 20 years. Over the course of the last 15 years I have watched the front ends become more disney “cars” than truck. I don’t want eye lashes on the headlights. I also don’t like the suburban looking like it belongs to a funeral home. The reliability and strength of the 1500 is gone. I think gm just throws out trash because people keep buying it. I’m sick of the trash, I’ll be buying a Ford soon
What Kris said. The new Silverado looks like a cartoon Silverado knock off brought to real life. But yeah, how did the other auto makers keep inventory on the lot while GM was a ghost town. My wife was looking for a Traverse but went Grand Cherokee L and says she’ll never go back. I’m barely hanging on by a thread here, checking other brands now.
You’ll be back..Just like Arnie.:)
I don’t know why Silverado’s market share falls every year since I remember. It is GM flagship vehicle and has been spanked by RAM for years in a row. Cmon, GM. Do you want to reach 10% market share?
You have to stop looking at this as Silverado versus Ford F150. GM sells trucks under two makes. GM has outsold Ford and Stellantis for the past two years.
You have a problem when your flagship vehicle market share shrinks year after year. Sierra didn’t catch all the Silverado lost costumers.
From the fourteenth floor at west Grand blvd. to the beer can on the Detroit river. Forty + years of hideous management leaves a stain that can’t be removed. Lack of chips, poor management. Employee relations-strikes, poor management. Reliability problems, poor management.
Forty years ago Chevrolet alone was selling close to a million trucks a year. Forty years later Chevy has lost 450,000 customers . There’s a reason I still drive my 99 Silverado. Isn’t it reassuring to know someone that’s been around to see forty + years of market share decline running the company.
Part of the problem is GM is building cheap trucks, they look cheap , no wow factor , everything is dark dark dark, dark color paint, dark wheels, black only interiors, cheap black plastic all over outside of truck , stupid looking mirrors, black wall tires, no two tone, thin seats, blown plastic, interiors , little tiny dash knobs, black grills, black bumpers, car like dash in new models, fake allison trans, duramax has low torque , tail gate hits hitch receiver, you call the dealer and they dont know.
And the only interior color is BLACK
Rental car grade. I couldn’t agree with you more. And I was a GM guy for 30 years.
the truck are plain ugly, another example of GM dark colors with no wow factor, cheap black plastic all over the exterior, stupid mounted mirrors, unfinished cheap wheel lip moldings, stupid mounted mirrors, black bumpers, black wall tires, black wheels black interior, these 80K trucks look like they need to be traded in first year cause they look 5 years old. interiors are cheap, thin seats, little tiny radio knobs, car like dash, and GM fans wonders why people are buying Ram and Ford , its cause they look good, have nice interiors, many colors, GM fans really, you wonder why Ford and GM are out selling ?
I agree the all black theme looks cheap and does not age well its a Deal-breaker to me
Overall 2021 Pickup Sales
GM 778,688
Ford 726,003
Stellantis 569,389
GM also outsold Ford and Stellantis in 2020.
The market has spoken. And it speaks far louder than individuals’ opinions.
pierre ,
If what you say is true , then why is GM not saying it , because your lumping everything in the 49 different brands. Ford trucks out sell , and Ram is kicking ass and taking names. I own all 3 HD series trucks, 2019 denali 2500, 2022 Ford F350 , and a 2021 Ram 3500 , all have there plus’s and minus’s , but the Denali is cheap, The ford is most comfortable, and power is insane , The Ram will tow anything you want, hook it to the back of truck and its going with u . gm is a good everyday driver but it lacks , and its cheap, even the seats are thin cheap crap along with all there black unfinished plastics, and black blown plastic interior.
A new stat is needed..12MRA (months running average), a 20% drop for 1 week interruption in an 11 week quarter?
Seems a bit over blown. A 20% drop due to fuel spiking .60$/gallon in the quarter is a foreboding sign of a major economic hiccup.
Trucks are too expensive and GM dealer body treats customers like dirt. I personally called five dealers in Texas requesting info on truck prices. None call back. Well, the competition is now in my crosshairs.
Add in Suburbans, Tahoes Escalades, Savana,Express , all selling at north of 60k and you end up with a whole lot more $$$ than just selling Silvees and Sierras
if not for chevrolet we would still have flathead engines and cranking them by hand
Well yeah, who wants to drop $60k on a truck with bad lifters.
Who wants an outdated limited model when the new pick ups will be produced in a few weeks 🙂
The front facia on the work truck and Custom is screams cheap! Don’t know why the had to make a different front facia for them but the are ugly! Won’t buy a regular cab because of the looks!
Look out everyone, the trolls are out hot and heavy!!!!
With recent quality control concerns with both the V8 engines and the ongoing 8 speed debacle, the usual GM inept management, lowest mileage ratings and plain old lack of product this is hardly surprising. Styling is up to taste and I have never found the current trucks or SUV’s to be bad so I doubt that is playing much of a role. Judging by the sheer number of 2019-current Silverado/Sierra pickups on the road all over the different states I visit, I would say styling is not an issue with most.
