A surprising amount of current pickup owners say they plan to own an electric truck of some type within the next ten years.
Cambridge, Massachusetts-based automotive research firm Car Gurus recently published the results of its 2021 Pickup Truck Sentiment Survey, which polled 1,026 current pickup truck owners on their sentiments towards various truck-related topics, including brands, prices, electric trucks, and the impact of the COVID–19 pandemic on the truck industry.
Of those surveyed, 43 percent said they expect to own an electric truck within the next decade. Car Gurus said interest in battery-powered pickups was highest among millennials and those who currently own small or compact trucks like the Chevy Colorado and Ford Maverick.
Survey participants also indicated they believed Tesla was the industry tech leader, “despite delays with their Cybertruck production,” Car Gurus says. Rivian, meanwhile, was not often referenced among current pickup owners and “has a long way to go with consumer awareness and perceptions,” based on CarGurus‘ conclusions from this survey. It also believes that traditional automakers like Chevy and Ford can still earn many of these buyers’ hearts with their future electric truck offerings, despite newer brands like Tesla and Rivian having their own competitive products.
“Knowing truck buyers are surprisingly flexible on brand choice, there’s still plenty of opportunity for electric trucks like the Ford F–150 Lightning or Chevrolet Silverado EV that are expectant to go market much sooner,” Car Gurus said in its report.
While current pickup owners were surprisingly responsive to the idea of an electric truck in this study, owners of other vehicle types are still more likely to own an EV in the near future, with 52 percent of passenger vehicle owners saying they plan to purchase an EV in the next decade.
In addition to the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup, which entered production late last year, GM will also soon launch the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST First Edition, and the battery-electric GMC Sierra Denali model as well. The Silverado EV will also be offered in a mass-market Work Truck trim level for fleets.

I would think “expect” does not necessarily mean “want to”, it just means “expects to”.
I don’t want an electric vehicle. I don’t live in California, Florida, or the like where it’s always warm. But the problem is, sometime in the next decade I’m going to need a new vehicle. What am I going to do if the only option is all-electric?
The masses need to wise up. I’m not saying there are not valid applications for all-electric vehicles, but you know, all-electric trucks, anything other than in-town, daily-driver, mall-crawler use, I think buyers will have remorse, especially if you don’t live where it’s always warm.
Exactly. This is a poll that’s probably saying, “with OEM’s going all electric by 2030, in 2032 do you expect your new truck to be electric?”
What the real findings of this poll are is 57% of truck owners believe the build back better people are high as a kite and won’t achieve their 2030 goals.
Those electric vehicle price tags need to decrease significantly before I’d ever consider an electric vehicle. Even then, there’s still much needed infrastructure and innovation before most people will consider the purchase.
The EV infrastructure is so bad right now that only dumb liberals that live in places like San Francisco or New York are buying them because they think they’re cleaner or something. Meanwhile, all of the big automakers like GM and Ford are kissing Democrat politicians behinds by making vehicles that hardly anybody wants.
Hold on, it’s a Brandon world we’re living in!
Absolutely BS poll. I will buy the new 2023 1 ton Denali ultimate duramax and have it until I die. Deleted and maybe capableof runningon fry oil. I will never be subservient to the globalist.
good luck to them…
What this article actually says is that 43% of truck owners don’t actually need a truck.
Most of the people I know with 1/2 tons, could do everything they do with their truck, with a small car. They own a truck because they like sitting tall and looking cool.
they’ll be doing a lot of sitting while their trucks charge. more time to look cool!!!!
Lmao
I’m 79 years old, so the possibility of buying an electric vehicle of any kind is remote! I don’t really think we are looking at E vehicles as a solution to anything, it just sounds cool to think of doing something to save the planet! My big question is, where is all of this electricity coming from? Most of it comes from burning coal! Doesn’t that polute? Looks like to me we are just swapping one source of pollution for another!
they are moving the pollution from the cities where the cars are to the country where the power generating plants are located
That is pretty much the thought that ran thru my head also. I am not a contractor & I do not make my living with my trucks but they are used for dragging home firewood, wood pellets for my stove, hunting, fishing, hauling quad & everything else that is needed to go back & forth to my ADK’s camp which is 350 miles from my home. I don’t have to move kids back & forth to colleges anymore; where a pick- up was certainly used & appreciated. The bottom line is that an ev does not fit into my lifestyle. I have no problem with the technology nor their availability but please don’t force it upon me or make owning an ICE vehicle a financial burden.
What’s not appealing about these electric trucks is that they make them too different, too much light shows, they look soft. Put an EV truck next to an ICE truck and every single EV truck looks like a toy. Why can’t they design something that looks like an actual Truck. The Lightning looks like an actual truck.
So you need your truck to look tough? Compensating for something?
people who own an EV will have more than one vehicle. if i owned a EV and wanted to haul our ATVs to camp 200 mile away pulling a trailer i would still need to have An ICE powered truck.
i will buy an EV when i see old joe flying on a battery powered air force 1 and riding in a battery powered limo. more rules for thee but not for me.
Of course 43% think this way. The rest of the majority (Not All as there are Edge Cases) just do not know it yet!!!
I wonder if you polled owners of Nokia and Flip Phone users whether if they plan on buying a Smart Phone next would have been Lol
My coworker drives about 100 Miles combined back and forth for work. He Pre-Ordered the Silverado (Doesn’t Like the Cybertruck) and he cannot wait. He typically holds onto his Truck typically for 7 Years. Just imagine the amount of money he will save just in Gasoline and Oil Changes alone. People who refuse to understand just how Superior (Not Always as there are Edge Cases) BEV’s are to ICE makes no sense to me. Yes as a Gear Head I love the Sound of a Ferrari but the majority of the so called Soccer Moms do not care. The World has already decided that BEV’s won and ICE will start going away. But keep believing what you want I guess. I’m sure Nokia thought they didn’t have to really worry about the iPhone HAHA
I am just Glad that GM didn’t take the Nokia approach and is going All In and might Survive if not actually Thrive in this new BEV World!!!
Other Legacy Automakers might be in serious Trouble. VW went in and so has GM but I won’t be shocked if we hear of a pretty decent sized Legacy Company going down by 2030.
I own a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. I use this for my limo service. Also own a 04 Silverado 2500 that I plow with. We also have a 04 4 door crew cab 2500 that my wife uses to pull her horse trailer and her regular trailer. They are all used and worked. My Tahoe goes 300 to 500 miles a day depending. The Aldo their job. Electric trucks would not work for us
I was looking at an RV magazine with a story about Quartzite and how many RV’s “Snowbirds” go their each Winter. Over a “million” camp out in the desert each year. I am planning to take my 33 foot 5th Wheel there next year from Vancouver Canada. My 2021 GMC Dually will be pulling the 12000 lbs. trailer. This is my last vehicle due to age but if I were younger I have two questions. Could an Electric Pick Up pull my trailer a reasonable distance before having to stop to recharge? If most of the RV’s there are electric other than “Solar” Charging, how would you recharge your vehicle. Those of us who use our Pick ups primarily for towing have yet to SEE accurate figures of how FAR an electric one ton could go PULLING a 10,000 pound or more load. I don’t care how fast it goes 0-60 in. Endurance is the major key for those who WORK with their trucks.
explain to me how EVs are zero emissions when the only emissions free power generation is nuclear and the people pushing EVs want nothing to do with nuke power
Emission free electric power generation: wind, solar, hydro, geothermal in addition to nuclear. I am a fan of EV (have driven electric for 10 years) and also support nuclear.
20% is still generated by coal and 40% by natural gas. anything that produced power has to take a s–t someplace along the way so no power generation is completely 100% emission free.
So 43% of the population are coming out of the closet??? 😱
GM better hope so or they could go bust if people don’t by their EVs.
How do people still think nuclear is clean??? Ever hear of everything becoming radioactive for thousands of years!!! Nuclear rods, all steel used in construction, anything in the containment room! WAKE UP PEOPLE!
Nuclear is clean.
Nuclear fission, the way atoms are split is not clean” at all, with heavy deadly waste left over, that will last dozens of centuries, that needs to be securely stored for many generations. But nuclear fusion, the way scientists have been able so far in small quantities, that actually fuses the atoms together, in a way that leaves no waste is fairly clean, with no left over deadly waste. But the process creates such great enormous temperatures, that greatly limits its usage so far. But that is why we must continue as is, to help stimulate the technological knowledge of trial and error, but at very high stakes.
Big Picture though. EVs are only going to get better. There are still big gains to be had in battery cost and range.
Also those tailpipe fumes aren’t great. They don’t instantly dissipate, so we’re all breathing them on the highway. And that’s without the CO2.
In a 2 vehicle household, an electric truck might be a no brainer. Long distance family hauler for the trips and such and an electric crew cab pickup for the around town run-about. Price needs to get there though and I’m sure it will.
Lordstown motors endurance is the working man’s EV truck.
Expect is not the same as want. And I’ll bet the people who don’t ‘expect’ to own one, don’t participate in polls.
Ok I’ve owned Chevy trucks my whole life, used at the very beginning, but only new for the past 30+ years. Currently in our second Colorado, only because the first was an Ext Cab, when we both worked. But now we are retired and need only one vehicle, so now it’s a crew cab Colorado 4×4, WT, V6, we use for everything including towing a 26’, 5,600 max lbs travel trailer. But if Chevy can bring an AWD SilvErado EV WT to the table, with everything they promised, all wheel steering I could do without though to help keep the price reasonable, like at least 45k or so? Yes I’ll buy one.
I enjoy the “EV” support comments. It’s Always about what will be and not what is. Fossil fuel is now and electric MAY be. Let’s not cancel the incandescent light bulb before the CFL which guess what?
Doesn’t exist. Because of mercury. And electric cars won’t exist in the current form because of lithium.
The dirty political money is all EV and it is beyond apparent.
I live in a rural area with aging electric infrastructure. If only half of the houses in my rural neighborhood install big chargers, the overhead wires will melt and fall, right after the transformers all blow. I don’t have the need or want for an EV anyway, so there ya go…
