2022 GMC Terrain Is More Affordable Than The 2021 Model

The 2022 GMC Terrain introduces the fifth model year for the second-generation crossover, offering a mid-cycle enhancement, or refresh, over the preceding 2021 model year. Notably, the 2022 GMC Terrain is significantly less expensive than the 2021 Terrain.

The biggest price drop is for the 2022 GMC Terrain Denali AWD, which is now $900 less costly than an equivalent 2021 model-year vehicle, a 2.33-percent price reduction overall. Additionally, 2022 GMC Terrain SLT models are about 2 percent less expensive, with a $700 price cut for both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive models. Finally, 2022 GMC Terrain SLE models are $600 less expensive, which is also roughly a 2-percent price cut compared to the 2021 model year.

Although the 2022 model year introduces a mid-cycle enhancement for the Terrain nameplate, there are no significant changes in the Terrain’s features and options list to justify the price drop. The refreshed 2022 model is simply more affordable than the preceding 2021 model year.

That said, some of the changes include the deletion of the SL trim level, making the SLE trim the new entry-level model in the GMC Terrain lineup. The 2022 model year also introduces the new off-road-flavored AT4 trim level. LED signature Daytime Running Lamps are now standard across all equipment groups.

Outside, the 2022 GMC Terrain debuts new styling for the front and rear ends. The paint options list now includes Desert Sand Metallic (exclusive to AT4 trims), Marine Metallic, and Cayenne Red Metallic, while Blue Emerald Metallic, Graphite Gray Metallic, Satin Steel Metallic, and Red Quartz Tintcoat have all been deleted from the paint options.

Under the hood, the 2022 GMC Terrain is offered exclusively with the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine, which is rated at 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. Under the skin is the GM D2 platform. The new Terrain is produced at the GM San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico.

  1. The Denali is $900 cheaper because it lost the engine, but the engine was worth far more than $900.

    1. And the cost to produce a 1.5 and the 2.0 has to be minimal. Most other vehicles in this class have more HP either as standard or available as an option on the premium models. The Denali name isn’t worth much anymore.

      1. The RS name is losing its worthiness as well…it’s disgraceful what GM did to the RS Blazer, Traverse, and especially the Equinox. RS is just a trim level with red stitches and badge accents, not a performance upgrade anymore.

  4. Nine hundred dollars less for Denali trim!!!. well I would pay 900 more and give me a better engine instead of that 1.5 go -cart engine I thought GMC was professional grade well at least I thought I was . Big mistake dropping the 2.0 l I. the Denali trim

  5. What good is it to receive GM information in the mail or be told by your local dealer that the last Terrain, Denali trim, was produced in June, 2021. There are no Terrains available to purchase and I was told would not be until 2023. Think I need to keep my 2019 with a 2.0 engine.

    1. My wife got a build date for her Terrain Denali, week or March 13. So I think you were fed a line of BS. Oh, she doesn’t care if it has a 2.0, she (we) must have heated seats though.

  6. This will sound harsh, but who cares? Why would anyone buy or lease a Terrain or Equinox? They are wildly outclassed by nearly every vehicle in the segment and have been since they were introduced. Five model years later, they are the definition of mediocrity. I have been in a friend’s ’18 Terrain Denali many times and can’t believe how cheap the interior is for a $40,000 vehicle, and even with the 2.0, the performance is nothing remarkable. Now that the 1.5 is the only motor available, the vehicle is DOA.

  7. Two comments: 1. I went to check on a 2022 Terrain-Denali trim and was told by my local dealer that these would not be available.
    Next I went to view a Chevy Blazer. The MSRP was $49,000 (RS) and was told by the salesman that the price was $54,000 with the up charge. I decided that I didn’t even want to drive one due to the up charge. Since I had visited the GM dealers in Dubuque, I decided to purchase a 24 month extended warranty, hoping that this car situation would be straightened out bu 2024.
    I was pleased that I received information from GM that GM was going to go after those dealers misrepresenting GM with up prices and no incentives.
    I have been a GM customer for 55 years and hope to be able to deal fairly in 2024.

  9. The base model is cheaper because it lost the leather wheel and the Denali lost the 2 liter turbo engine. These changes move this and the Nox another step towards rental grade mediocrity- A GM hallmark

  10. Veery disappointed to see the Terrain downgraded to a cheap vehicle. I have a 2019 Denali and was hoping to trade for a 2022, but since the last were produced in June, that will not be possible. I assume they have done the same with the entire GMC line.
