The redesigned 2023 Toyota Sequoia is set for a reveal this evening, introducing an updated rival for the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon. Now, however, a few images of the new Sequoia were just leaked ahead of the SUV’s official debut.
Two images of the redesigned 2023 Toyota Sequoia were revealed, including an image of what is believed to be the new Capstone trim level in red. The Capstone is a luxurious range-topping variant that was also recently announced for the Toyota Tundra. The second image shows the off-road-ready 2023 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro, finished in white. Like TRD models in the past, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro is expected to include upgrades like off-road suspension, unique wheels, and other off-roading cues.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia will introduce the nameplate’s first new generation since the second-gen model arrived for the 2008 model year. As before, the new third-generation 2023 Toyota Sequoia will be related to the Toyota Tundra pickup truck, utilizing the same TNGA-F body-on-frame platform. The Sequoia will also incorporate an independent rear suspension setup, similar to rival full-size SUVs from General Motors.
As for the powertrain spec, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia will offer the same greasy bits as the 2022 Toyota Tundra. This should include the Tundra’s i-FORCE twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 gasoline engine, rated at 389 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 479 pound-feet of torque at 2,400 rpm, as well as the Tundra’s i-FORCE MAX twin-turbocharged hybrid 3.5L V6 gasoline engine, rated at 437 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 583 pound-feet of torque at 2,400 rpm.
The hybrid powertrain incorporates a parallel electric motor/generator located between the engine and transmission, as well as a nickel-metal hydride battery, the combination of which produces a maximum of 48 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
Both engines connect to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Stay tuned for more information on the debut of this GM rival, and make sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more General Motors competition news and around-the-clock GM news coverage.
Going off the new Tundra, it will look immensely better with the front bumper cut to add a steel bumper.
I Agree!
Nothing too special, the Armada is toast IMO..
I’ve never been a fan of the Sequoia’s exterior design but that TRD version changes everything! I love that one! In terms of the other one we see here I can only say that it is better than the last generation, but I still like that TRD one WAY more.
Finally. A three row competitor that doesn’t have engine lifter issues. And judging by reputation, probably little issues overall. Murica!
I wonder if the frame will rust off this one, like all the Toyota trucks after a few years. But I guess you value reputation more. They are very good at marketing, but it’s not reality. I had two Toyotas and will not buy another. Had far more problems then my Chevy’s. I will agree with one thing you wrote. GM had better deal with this damn lifter problem. First major issue I have had with a GM product.
Rust is a non-issue where I live. My son has a 1998 4Runner with 230k miles on it with zero rust anywhere. Thing has been bulletproof.
Your name is SoCal. You don’t count in regards to rust. A 1998 4runner elsewhere in North America would be a pile of red dust by now
Got a 96 4Runner in the driveway that has passed through to my kids. 350k runs and looks great, as well as my ‘14 4Runner, 06 RAV4, and ‘20 Tacoma. Bulletproof vehicles.
The 96 4Runner was plagued with head gasket problems had one. The 14 4Runner should come with antique tags since they’ve been using the same technology since the 4th generation. The 06 RAV4 was labeled a clunker by carcomplaints.com and the 20 Tacoma is still using old technology yet they are still having issues.
My 08 Tundra has 269K miles and I dive it to work at GM , so I call BS.
When I bought it had 16 miles on it and no special treatment.
Zero rust on the frame and never garaged.
I call BS….the 2008 Tundra was recalled for frame rust issues. Not to mention the 2007 and 2008 had engine failures. It’s a pile of crap.
I have owned 4 Toyota cars, 2 trucks and a ’92 Lexus SC400 and a 2013 Lexus CT200 in the last 50 years and have NEVER spent a dime on any of them other than gas, oil and tires. the year of the Toyotas I owned we’re a ’72, ’78. ’85. ’86, ’97 and a ’99 and non of them ever rusted and all of them we’re built in Japan except the ’99 and still driving the ’99 Camry with 174,600 original miles. Best cars on the road for the money.
Lol the new Tundra is barely in customers hands and reports of waste gate issues are already becoming “common” and reported as failing in under 500 miles. It’s at the back of the engine and most are pulling the cab OFF the frame to access it.
This is basically the Landcruiser engine, the epitome of reliability. I’d bet they get to the bottom of this faster than GM did with their lifter issues (or in the case of the latter, it’s still on going).
Funny it isn’t affecting the land cruiser but considering toyota can’t seem to build them quick enough due to shortages we may never know. Toyota never really fixed the cam tower leaks in the tundra either. I owned nothing but Toyota until I found them not to be any better. Go on car complaint.com and you’ll see there’s plenty of issues with Toyotas. It’s not 1980 anymore.
Even in the 80’s, Toyota wasn’t much better than average. The difference way back was that the Toyota’s and Honda’s were all quite simple and basic. Way less to go wrong and the only thing people in the salt/snow belt had to deal with was the 3 or 4 year old Japanese vehicles that were literally nothing but rusted out junk.
Just the other day I was in a Lyft heading back to work. As I was speaking with the driver, he began to tell me how his newer Tacoma was in the shop longer than he owner it. We were talking cars, but not specifically Toyota’s. He’s the one who started telling me how the newer ones just aren’t as good as the older ones. He mentioned another person he knows with a Toyota who has also had numerous issues. Point being? None of the Japanese brands are any better than GM or Ford or Chrysler. What they are very good at is selling people (sheep) on the marketing and making them believe those brands are better.
No car brand as far as the “affordable” brands are good. They are all cheap and build them as cheap as possible to maximize profits. They don’t care about making things last they would rather build it cheap so you need another one in less then 10 years compared to making things that will last. I don’t care who the manufacture is they all do this until you get above I’d say $350k but then the maintainer fees are insane at that price point. I guess that’s what happens in todays throw away society.
Looks nice, would like to see in person for more details. Oddly enough at first glance, I got a Volkswagen Atlas feel from the rear quarter and rear roof line.
Hahahaha. The new tundras has turbo issues already. Check out the forums.
See if they are having them in 10+ years like GM would do. “We only warranty manufacturing defects not design defects”. That is the mic drop for GM engine quality
The cam tower leak is still happening on the 5.7…I just sold my last 2020 Tundra. Horrible interior with rattles galore.
The lifters aren’t a design defect, that is mostly a maintenance defect from owners. They handled the supplier issue and the other failures are really miniscule (in the decimal of a percent). Good troll though!
Exactly. Run synthetic oil with good filter and change it when due.
The lifter issues are mainly occurring under 10k miles. How is it a maintenance issue? You obviously hate Americans to believe they would not take care of their cars during the first year of ownership. Get out of here with your anti American rhetoric.
What lifter issues? The 0.05% that may be plagued? Good to know you know the reliability of a completely new motor that they don’t have a ton of experience and is hugely more complex than previous designs, I am guessing that is based on past trends from the 1980’s design? Haha. You are stating Merica and cheering the Japanese…
Oh yes! A Toyota is VERY American🤡 btw the 2022 Tundra is already having detrimental reliability issues so that’s false.
Well most would say anything made in America is American. But whatever to each their own. I don’t see why it matters as long as Americans are employed isn’t that always the complaint people have is things keep leaving here moving to china? Some people you can never satisfy I guess they live to complain. I thought the tundra was made in San Antonio but maybe I’m wrong.
Alabama
Isn’t Alabama part of the USA? Or did something happen in the last 12 hours and they left? It just fascinates me the amount of people on here who cry on every article written about a vehicle gm makes in another country of how oh they should make that here blah blah, but these same people still complain when a foreign company moves production here lmao.
Matthew: It’s way WAY more than just where a vehicle is assembled. Do some research.
I have and I’ll say it again some people just like to complain they live for it. So what the plan is then no “American” auto makers should leave everything should be made in the USA not Mexico not Canada not china nowhere but here, but then also no foreign company should move any production here right? They all should stay in Japan or china or the UK and just import the vehicles here got it. Funny how so many people complain on here about jobs leaving America this is a daily thing that is said in case you didn’t know but yet even thought these vehicles are employing Americans naw that’s not good enough either. Well thank god none of you call any shots myself included at least we are nothing but people making comments on a forum that don’t matter.
Matthew: Research the tax Japan places on American brand cars to be sold there.
Research the fact that it’s near impossible for American brands to even go into Japan.
Research the manipulation of the Yen vs. dollar to their benefit.
Research the lower wages these Americans are making in the Japanese plants here.
Research the huge tax incentives the Japanese brands take to put an assembly line in any state. And yes, tax incentives are given to American brands too.
Now research the way the Japanese do business. Very different from here and they are out for blood. Shall I go on?
You or anyone else can buy or keep buying Japanese brand vehicles. Not me. Not now, not ever. I’ll walk first.
That’s fine Dan you can buy whatever you please this is America not china or Russia so why would anyone try control what you can spend your money on? Here’s the simplest way to break this down for you ok. Here we go. This company gives jobs that better peoples lives people are working full time with benefits 401k insurance ect… why would I hate on any company that is giving Americans this ability? See here’s the difference between us I don’t care about the yen or the dollar I don’t care about what business practices gm does or ford or Toyota or Ferrari what I care about is people being able to better themselves that is what matters to me. You think if Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai or any other Japanese automaker packed up and left here do you believe those workers would get a job with gm ford or Chrysler? I’ll answer it for you the answer is no. You don’t have to like them that’s fine I own a Jeep Wrangler I’ve never owned a Japanese brand but again I’m glad they are here and I’m glad people are benefiting from it you aren’t and guess what it’s America again not china or Russia so you are free to express your feelings however you want my friend. As long as those workers are happy I’m happy.
Don’t bother with Dan. He’s obviously an an anti American who’d rather see his fellow Americans suffer. We live in a global economy, and he’s too old and set in his anachronistic ways to understand.
Looks like a bad Chinese design Jeep.
LOL. It’s that red and all that chrome i tell ya.
My gripe with the amber marker lights, aka “Raptor lights”, is that they aren’t needed here. Here it’s simply a copy cat fad. They are on transport trucks, dually pickups, and Raptor and TRX becauase they are require as legal marker lights on vehicles over 80″ wide not including mirrors.
These are the new fake/nonfunctional hood scoops
The lights are required by law because if the total width
I expressly addressed that point, infact that was my entire comment. Width isn’t the case with Tundra or Sequoia
Ha.. that was the first thing I thought.. looks like a jeep no bueno! Trd looks cool though.
The frame rust issue was years ago.. and unlike GM, toyota dealt with it and acutally replaced frames. Unlike Gm that continues to have the issue and they are not really dealling with it. Least Toyota holds their venders accountable!
They must have hired a Jeep theme person. It’s that red and chrome.
Ugly POS
Someone’s angry. But hey aren’t you lucky to be driving the most beautiful car on the road? that should make everyone else jealous.
My vehicle os the most beautiful on the road 😍
Is
I’m most disappointed that the V8 is gone and so is the drop down power rear tailgate window.
Looks like it will be a good year for Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX80 Sales. These both have a super reliable Natural Aspired 5.6L V8 engine. Toyota might be a reliable brand but add Turbos to the engines and say good bye to all that reliability
Nissan reliable… two words that don’t go together. Former Nissan tech here. We’ll have to wait have a decade at least to see if the new Toyotas engines will be any good.
Yep…Just lemon lawed by wife’s nissan rogue. It was a huge POS.
Ours has been trouble free mostly for 72k miles.
I’d buy an Armada. The engine has been around long enough for any potential issues to be known about, and there’s no shortage of replacement motors or parts.
Downside is Nissan dealers are taking advantage of low inventory levels and trying to sell them at msrp, which you’re a fool to pay. At that price point you can get into an X5, Q7, Tahoe, the nicest Grand Cherokee L ever, etc.
I think Nissan is still having issues with cylinder 7. Lots of posts of their forums.
Mf: If your 72K Nissan has a CVT trans, and if you have not had it totally replaced yet, then hold onto your wallet! Most of them are toast by 65K.
Thank you, someone with common sense that doesn’t automatically think a brand new engine from a manufacturer that had some strong reliability back in the 80’s and 90’s is going to have the same luck with a brand new engine that is very complicated and using tech they haven’t utilized much before. This, oh it is a Toyota and will last non sense, has to stop. They have fallen from grace and their latest vehicles aren’t what they used to be. The last gen Tundra had above average engine reliability because it was used for nearly two decades and basic (and it still had problems), this new one doesn’t have the same podium to stand on.
Lots of issues on the gen3 tacoma when compared to the gen2.
I like it’s looks but wish it offered the old v8. I’m sure this new engine will be “fine”, as most of the turbo v6s are, but just like the Ecoboost I suspect that the gas mileage will not be a real improvement over the V8 when doing big suv stuff.
They really need a diesel. It’s impossible to compete with Tahoe/Yukon with that diesel.
This thing is going to be a pos. Toyota quality (not the same as reliability) is awful. Not to mention how overpriced, incapable, and unpractical it will be compared to the Yukon, Wagoneer, and Expedition. And the Tundra is already having major reliability issues. They were stupid for taking away the V8. Inserting a turbo V6 and a 10 speed is probably the most stupid thing Toyota could’ve done. Ford knows how to build turbo V6’s but Toyota that’s a whole another story. You need major processing power for a 10 speed which Toyota definitely doesn’t have. Just is going to be another Armada with pathetic sales. Be smart and buy products from companies who actually knows the average American family: Chevy, GMC, Ford, and Jeep.
My Lexus GX460 rides so smooth, like floating on an ice sheet , never a mechanical issue either. The Japanese sure how how to build problem-free SUVs. Then there’s GM.
I’m guessing it’s a 10 or 15 year old Lexus you found on Craigslist…
Sorry, it’s a 2021.
Oh yes old technology. That Lexus is basically a 2004 Toyota 4Runner. It completely baffles me how Toyota fan boys come on a GM site to troll their product. The new Toyotas have been riddled with problems your Lexus is good because it has been virtually unchchanged for 20 years. This coming from a recovering Toyotaholic
Ryan: Thank you for that. I find it absolutely puzzling how Toyota fans do come on here for what? Obviously they don’t have a lot of good stuff going on with their actual fanboy sites or they would be there with the pom-poms in full attire. Then take Wayno above. “Bragging” about how smooth the 2021 Lexus rides and with no problems. Well ya. Even Volvo with quite low ranking doesn’t have many issues within the first year either. And like you pointed out, that Lexus is antique in every way.
Toyota fans are just sickening.
Dude the article is about a Toyota man so you have an issue with people talking about what the article is about lol. I’ll use the same thing you said on you, you must not have anything going on considering the fact that since you hate this brand so much you continue on any article that is written about them to not only read it but comment also. If it’s that big of a deal to you then why even click on it and read it in the first place? Do you want the email address to gm authority? I’ll give it to you so you can write them and tell them they can’t write about anything but gm vehicles anymore.
James (dude): What’s the name of this site? Toyota Authority? Nope. It’s GM Authority. I don’t choose what articles are placed on GMA. I think your little snipe towards me backfired. The thing you are missing is that I am NOT on ANY Toyota sites and would rather have my eyes plucked out with a wooden spoon rather than go to any Toyota site. You see, I’m on a GM site and I happen to like GM. You know what else? I happen to like Ford and I go on Ford Authority as well to read articles. I also like Chrysler. So dude, maybe you should be the one going to another site?
Then don’t click the article if it bothers you that bad. Did you not see before hand in the big bold black letters this was about the sequoia? Is someone forcing you to against your will to read these articles? If they are and you need help tell me where you are and I’ll call the local police department for you because that’s not cool nobody should be forced against their will. You understand you don’t have to click on articles you don’t like right?
@ Dan
Salt is the mind killer
Still butt ugly…looks like a retro jeep design that needs to go on a diet.
That is one UGLY sucker…only thing uglier is a Lexus !!!
Toyota went back to a solid rear axle . now if they could get rid the 3rd row , in the TRD pro . it could be a good overlander or car camper . as we don’t want or need a 8 passenger wagon for off road , gm still owns most of the market , Nissan patrol/ armada is the only v8 gas hog left id wait a few yrs see how good the engine is
A lot of folks complaining about Toyota reliability are in denial. Everyone has their preferences for anything, but then, some folks derive pleasure in putting things down just for the fun of it. Life shouldn’t be that way – it’s okay to have a preference and it doesn’t have to be Toyota.
I buy only vehicles made in the US by American companies. If GM makes it in the US I will buy it. If GM builds it in Mexico I won’t buy it. I support only US owned companies. I still believe in American pride and worry for my kids and grandkids if we don’t stop sending money abroad. Buy the way, I own a Chevy Suburban with 395,000 miles on it and have NEVER been into any of the driveline for repairs. Nobody but nobody but trucks as well as we do.
