The refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 introduced a long list of changes and updates over the preceding 2021 model year and pre-refresh 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. One of the most important changes are revised towing capacity numbers for certain body style, trim level and powertrain combinations, so let’s take a closer look at these updated figures.
The chart embedded directly below shows the towing capacity figures for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 when the full-size pickup is equipped with a standard ball hitch. This chart also includes figures for the truck when it’s equipped with the available Max Trailering package (RPO code NHT), which improves the vehicle’s towing performance through a heavy-duty cooling setup and revised suspension, among other upgrades.

Cool. Now open up the online build configurator so I can see what the heck/how much my order will be!
I ordered mine in December, have no idea what it will cost me until the middle of Feb and no clue when I will get it. Went with the AT4 Diesel with trailering package.
You can build a new 2022 GMC truck on the Costco Auto Program website. It shows all the options and pricing.
So just so I understand… a 2022 refreshed AT4, Crew Cab Short Bed w/ 3.0 Duramax will only tow 8,800 pounds? No Max trailering available on AT4’s either from what I understand. The GM rep I spoke with at my dealer told me to expect a much higher towing capacity for the 3.0 Duramax even without the max trailering package being available on the AT4. My Mastercraft X24 with trailer weighs about 8,500+ pounds so how concerned should I be? Apologies in advance as I don’t tow much outside of twice a year from lake to storage, and storage to lake. Thanks.
That would be cutting it a little too close for me. I have no doubt it would tow your boat just fine, just seen way too many videos of trucks being dragged down the ramp by big boats. Maybe try the AT4 HD? Rent a truck for the day? Or pay someone a couple hundred bucks to haul it for you the two times a year? Maybe I’m being too cautious, but not worth flooding my $70K pickup…
Need info on payloads
Can someone explain why the 5th wheel capacity is lower than the standard hitch? I thought you can usually tow the same or slightly more with a 5th wheel.
Towing a gooseneck or fifth wheel puts weight directly on the rear axle and springs. The ball hitch towing they refer to is with a weight distribution hitch that spreads the weight over both the tow vehicle and trailer. Personally I think any time you start getting into the weights described here, one should be looking at a 3/4 ton pickup. With that you get the heavier suspension, heavier transmission, stronger axles and suspensions, heavier tires (additional plies for weight carrying), larger cooling systems and BIGGER brakes.
I wouldn’t tow much with the transmissions they are dumping in them.
Ì to am somewhat confused when it comes to 5th wheel trailering. What pkg do I need for my ht/Ton towable 5th wheel? 30.5 ckts Jayco ht
Why does the towing go up with 20″ wheels for the standard hitch, but not with the gooseneck? (Looking at the crew cab standard bed 4×4 3.0L)
Does anyone know why the gooseneck towing is lower? Goosenecks are easier on the suspension, more controllable, distribute the weight over both axles instead of being a leaver forcing all the weight on the rear. The gooseneck towing should be higher not lower
The less weight with gooseneck on the half ton is due to the smaller frame and smaller axle that was much less gross axle weight rating than an HD. It’s a semi floating axle with a smaller ring gear compared to the full floating large ring gear HDs. Again, frame design, springs, and other things contribute. The payload on a 1500 is usually around that range, 1200-1500lbs. The payload on a 2500 HD 6.6 gas averages over 3,000lbs even on the optioned up trucks. You’re not going to find a ton of 5th wheels that put acceptable pin weight on the axle of a 1500 and leave room for gear, people…etc.
This article does not match the GMC email I just received for Denali Ultimate with 3liter diesel
“ 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel with best-in-class 277 diesel hp, 460 lb.-ft. of torque and best-in-class 4WD diesel towing capacity of 13,000 lbs†. All three are mated to a 10-speed transmission.”
That’s incorrect, the Denali is not available with the max trailering package so the max towing won’t be 13,000. The reason is because of the adaptive shocks; even though GM could easily engineer a setup where the adaptive shocks were compatible with the MTP, but I guess they don’t want to spend the money, which is dumb IMO.
Ordered a Denali 1500 3.0 turbo diesel and was told it could tow 13,000 then told it must have tow max package which is not available on Denali and above. I must drop to a SLT in order to haul 13,000 lbs with max trailering package. Once a week I learn different changes ,now can’t get heated steering wheel
Yep, The Denali is not available with the max trailering package. Heated steering wheel is not available for the first batch of the refreshed 2022’s
