GM Is Changing The Way Dealers Order The Buick Encore, Encore GX For 2022

GM Authority has learned that dealers looking to shore up new inventory of the Buick Encore and Buick Encore GX will need to use a “port consensus” model, rather than the previous “consensus” model. The new order method will be in place for the remainder of the 2022 calendar year.

To explain the difference between these two models, let’s begin by explaining the standard consensus model. Previously, inventory allocation for the Buick Encore and Encore GX was via “consensus,” wherein dealers would request vehicles from the factory in regular cycles (a.k.a. DOSP).

The requests would be made through a GM system that would include recommendations from GM based on market conditions, both locally and nationally. However, the dealer could still pick and choose which models to request. From there, GM could fulfill that request, or modify it slightly depending on factors like availability and constraints. Once a consensus had been reached, the requested vehicles were produced and delivered to dealers.

Note that this allocation model is different from a sold retail order, which is treated differently.

Now, however, dealers will need to use a “port consensus” order method for new inventory of the Buick Encore and Encore GX. Comparatively speaking, port consensus involves General Motors directly selecting the vehicles which it thinks are needed, or the vehicles which can be built according to existing confines or constraints.

The vehicles are then built and shipped to port. Once the vehicles arrive, dealers can pick and choose which models they want. The big difference here is that rather than having dealers request the models they want prior to production, GM builds the models first, then lets dealers choose from what is available.

It’s believed that dealers will need to use the port consensus model for new inventory of the Buick Encore and Buick Encore GX for the rest of the 2022 calendar year.

It’s unclear at this time why GM is shifting to a port consensus order model for the Buick Encore and Buick Encore GX, but supply chain issues may be part of it. Alternatively, the Buick Encore and Encore GX may be selling so fast that GM wants to speed up the order process, which is particularly lengthy for the two Encore models considering both are produced in South Korea, and thus require extended shipping times.

What’s more, both the Buick Encore and Buick Encore GX are good candidates for the port consensus model, as customers are less likely to be very particular when it comes to customization and options, as compared to models like the Chevy Corvette C8 or Camaro. Additionally, some options have been reduced, as the Buick Encore no longer offering its base trim level.
