General Motors Workers At Silao Plant To Vote On Union In February

Workers at the General Motors Silao plant in Mexico will vote on which trade union they’d like to represent them in early February.

Employees at the GM Silao plant voted to oust the Miguel Trujillo Lopez union last year over poor working conditions and low pay, among other issues. The vote was widely considered to be the first test of new rules implemented under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which allows Mexican workers to choose the union they believe will best represent them and their interests.

Workers at the GM Silao plant voted to implement a new contract with the Miguel Trujillo Lopez union last April, but Mexican authorities later discovered serious irregularities in the voting process, including discarded ballots. The United States then lodged an official complaint via the rapid response mechanism in the USMCA agreement, allowing it to step in and oversee a future vote alongside Mexican labor officials. That vote ended with the trade union being ousted, paving the way for employees to vote in a new organization to represent them.

According to Reuters, employees will be able to choose from four different unions in the upcoming contract vote, which will be held between February 1st and February 2nd. The publication notes that one of these unions, SINTTIA, is an independent worker’s union that was formed by plant employees last year as they sought to oust the sitting organization. The Miguel Trujillo Lopez union, which is part of a broader union group called the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM), will not seek re-election in the voting process.

The General Motors Silao plant produces both the GMC Sierra 1500 and the Chevy Silverado 1500 full-size pickup trucks, along with a variety of GM Small Block V8 engines and GM automatic transmissions.

  2. Hopefully no union is voted in. They do absolutely nothing but protect lazy people who want to do nothing all day but get paid astronomical wages to do incredibly unskilled jobs

      1. Building a car is skilled… but the line workers do not build a car they put on a part or 2 and some bolts. Not exactly skilled work.

      1. Lol sounds like a truth bomb hit you pretty hard. Maybe don’t drink so much kool-aid and see that the Union really does nothing but help lazy people keep there jobs. I work in a factory and see it every day. It also makes it nearly impossible to fire bad workers, we have like a 7 or 8 strike policy which is quite ridiculous.

    6. Sadly most of the folks that make statements like this have never set foot in an automotive assembly or manufacturing plant. I am a salaried worker and am behind those union workers 100%. Most of the benefits I enjoy were a result of things the union did to get them which were passed on to the salaried workers.

    2. Agreed! Move all US-market GM manufacturing to the USA…many foreign brands now have plants in the US, so it should be possible for GM to figure that out. I don’t care if it’s union or non-union, it should be here.

  6. Tony. They should be built where they are sold. We buy a ton of G.M. pickups here in the great white north. 150s and Rambos re not up to our standards.

  7. The US is depending too much on foreign countries to produce many vital products. This will someday bite us in the butt! Build US . Buy US.

  8. I hope we close that plant down, can’t claim to be an American truck if it’s literally built south of the border
