General Motors and Transport Canada have issued a recall for certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 model-year Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks that were shipped with the incorrect factory spare tire.
The problem: affected vehicles were all ordered with 18-inch, 20-inch or 22-inch optional accessory wheels. Despite the presence of the larger accessory wheels, the trucks are equipped with a smaller 17-inch spare tire.
The hazards: operating the vehicle with one 17-inch wheel and three 18-inch, 20-inch or 22-inch wheels can prevent the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) from engaging. A vehicle with ABS may have reduced braking performance or may be prone to locking up the tires under heavy braking.
The fix: GM dealers will be instructed to provide the owner with the appropriate spare tire and will apply a new spare tire information label. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner. Owners will also be provided an owner’s manual insert that says which spare tire should be used with the wheels and tires on their truck.
Affected components: spare tire.
Affected vehicles:
- 2019, 2020 and 2021 model-year Chevy Silverado 1500
- 2019, 2020 and 2021 model-year GMC Sierra 1500
Number of affected vehicles: a total of 14 vehicles are affected by this problem.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. If owners are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall, they can visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls or other actions that may be active on it. Even though it’s only 14 units affected I find it hilarious they would put a wrong spare in it in the first place.
It’s because those are LPO accessory wheels… the factory puts on standard wheels, the dealer gets wheels (upsize in this case) through the accessory supply chain and swaps them before delivery.
So in order for it to work right, the factory has to get the memo that the truck was ordered with the LPO options and put the “wrong” size spare in, corresponding to the final wheel size, not the spare for the wheels actually going out the door.
Ahh got it.
Waiting for the recall for US units. My 2020 Denali 2500 came with 20 inch wheels from the factory but the spare is only an 18 inch. I complained to the dealer and they verified a 20 inch spare would fit in the well underneath the truck. They even gave me a price if I wanted to have them put a 20 inch spare on it……..It was a little over $1000 dollars!!! I declined to pay for a 20 inch spare.
There’s no problem, you’re mistaken.
The actual wheel diameter does not matter for the spare, the circumference (outside diameter) of the tire is what matters. On the HD’s the spares come in 17 and 18 inch sizes because the revolutions per mile of the 18 and 20 inch tires are close enough.
17 inch LT265/70R17 = 660 revs/mi
18 inch LT275/70R18 = 624 revs/mi
20 inch LT275/65R20 = 610 revs/mi
My neighbor and I both have 2018 Silverado 1500s. Both of them are 4 wheel drive. My truck came with 18 inch wheels and tires and a 17in spare that is 3/4 shorter in height than the 18s. My neighbors truck came with 20 wheels and tire and a 17in spare smaller size than mine. The dealership told us to contact Chevrolet customer service. They just laughed at us and told us we should have crawled under the truck before we signed the paperwork. They owners manual specifically state do not mix sizes on 4 x4 units
I found more than 14 trucks on one dealership lot that had this same problem in 2018. Checked a second dealership and found 8 more at that time. Dealership 2 miles from my home has 12 2021 on theirs lot today,so stop lying to us and fix the problem.
I have 22 Sierra limited with 18″ and a 17″ spear the dealer said that 1″ is like diving with a low tire but i want a 18″ spear, will they replace it?
I have a 22 Sierra limited it has 18″ wheels and a 17″ spear, the dealer said the 1″ is just like driving with a low tire. I thank the US needs to replace them like Canada recall as quoted in recalls.

Well im pretty sure this is Standard Operation for GM, I have a 2017 Serria that was equipped with 20 in and it carried a 17 in spare.. when I asked about it at dealer they told me its not meant for long hauls. Just to get to a repair shop.
Well they say if pulling a trailer or hauling a load could in fact the ABs brake system and or tracking system???
I bought a 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 from cecil graves in st. Francisville, Louisiana. Had a blow out on the front passenger side last week and the spare tire that came with my truck (from the factory) did not fit on the front at all. I couldn’t even use it. Had to pay $185 to have my truck towed home, then over $230 for a used rim & tire that fits on the front & back tires so I can have a spare tire. They should have to reimburse me. The dealership told me that was my problem & that I have to deal with the spare tire myself.
I just had a flat and realized when but the spare on it was a 17in and I have 20in Rims. I have a 2021 GMC AT4 1500, I have called the dealership, when on GMC’s website and called into their customer care and they all say that there are no recalls on my VIN. I escalated the case with GM, because unless I”m missing something and I can read numbers they are different and the recall states it could effect the Anti-Lock breaks. Any advice?
