General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 model-year Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks that were shipped with the incorrect factory spare tire.
The problem: affected vehicles were all ordered with 18-inch, 20-inch or 22-inch optional accessory wheels. Despite the presence of the larger accessory wheels, the trucks were equipped with a smaller 17-inch spare tire from the factory.
The hazards: a vehicle with one 17-inch wheel and three 18-inch, 20-inch or 22-inch wheels can prevent the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) from engaging. A vehicle with ABS may have reduced braking performance or may be prone to locking up the tires during heavy braking events.
The fix: GM dealers will be instructed to provide the owner with the appropriate spare wheel and tire. Dealers will also apply a new spare tire information label and provide owners with an owner’s manual insert explaining the change. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.
Affected components: spare tire, spare tire information label.
Affected vehicles:
Number of affected vehicles: a total of 626 vehicles are affected by this problem.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. If owners are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall, they can visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls or other actions that may be active on it. Yep…..whenever I have a flat and put on that ugly spare, I tempt fate by driving at 100 MPH to see if the anti-lock brakes still engage properly.
Meanwhile, TESLAs keep crashing at an alarming rate due to faulty suspension and all we hear are crickets from NHTSA.
I’m just glad Tiger drove a Genesis and not a TESLA. TRUMP supporters GOOD. Biden supporters braindead.
It is sad that a dumb too small temporary donut spare tire is considered an acceptable new equipment spare tire on what is supposed to be a full sized “truck”.
I posted last week on my 2022 Sierra limited having the 17″ spear tire. Are they going to replace the 2022 models?
Same issue here and dealer keeps saying NOPE! 2022 AT4 20″ tires 17″ spare
some one at gm is really stupid.
Let me get this straight. The cost of a new truck, somewhere between 50 and 75 thousand dollars and the consumer doesnt even get a spare tire that matches the other 4. Wow ! unbelievable, but not suprised !!
I have a 2018 Silverado 1500 with 18” tires but a 17” spare. I just found this out because I had a flat. I will pursue an explanation
I replaced my spare for my truck with an 18inch and a matching tire as I just couldn’t figure out who in the f@!& decided putting a 17inch rim as a spare in the first place. Now let’s see if they will compensate me?!?!
Rams being recalled too? Same thing on them for years.
My 2014 came with a 265-70-17 spare. Stock tires are 265-65-18. Same diameter 31.5″, same revs per mile, same weight holding ability. Had a blow out on right rear, drove using the spare for 300-500 miles until I bought 4 new tires.
So what is the problem if they are the same diam? If different, that is an issue!
My 2017 Silverado has 18” alloy wheels with a 17” spare. My dealer told me this is the way they all are and “don’t worry about it!”
