The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are hugely popular pickup trucks, but now, both nameplates have been singled out as having major engine issues and reliability problems.
Per a recent post from non-profit consumer organization Consumer Reports, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are tied as the recent models most likely to exhibit major engine problems. The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are both pointed out as “they’re the same trucks sold under different brands,” according to Consumer Reports.
Consumer Reports listed several vehicles most likely to exhibit reliability issues in the organization’s 17 key trouble spots, which, in addition to Major Engine issues, also includes Engine Cooling issues, Major Transmission issues, Drive System issues, Electrical System issues, and Climate System issues.
Notably, the 2020 Buick Encore GX was the vehicle most likely to have brake system issues.
The Consumer Reports ranking is based on reliability data collected via Consumer Reports member surveys, and focuses on 1- to 3-year-old models.
According to Consumer Reports, 4 percent of Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra owners reported some kind of Major Engine issue, including full engine replacements, as well as cylinder head-related issues. Major engine issues include an engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head problems, head gasket problems, turbocharger or supercharger problems, and timing chain or timing belt problems.
Overall, Consumer Reports gives the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 one out of five with regard to reliability scoring.
As a reminder, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 were both offered prior to the full model refresh introduced for the 2022 model year, as well as before the pre-refresh 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited and 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited. Agreed ! Not repeat it about 150 million times please.
Well KSM it might just prove to be a very wise move.
re Vaxxer. Totally agree
2018 Sierra 5.3 w 65000 miles. Check engine light with no other symptoms. Solenoid on the oil pump that’s varies oil pressure during cylinder deactivation goes. They had to replace the entire oil pump assembly. Same time had to replace water pump for a bad bearing. $3200.00 in labor/parts. No warranty coverage. Dad retired from GM. WTF GM?!
Nearly every dealer will tell you that you must replace the entire oil pump but this is untrue. They just want to charge you for an oil pump. The solenoid valve can be purchased for about 15 bucks from gm but you have to have the gm part number for it. It will not show up in the dealer parts computer system under the vin number.
I have owned new chevy’s pickups (crewcabs) since 2004 and had little or no problems . The last 3 have had 5.3 engines. I have always changed my own oil.
I work on these models everyday. There are a high
percentage of these trucks with issues. The most common are transmission failure and valve lifter failure. Mostly contributed to faulty active fuel management lifter design. I have a 5 gallon bucket of failed lifters in my shop that came out of gm 5.3, 6.2. if you buy a new chevrolet buy a 3/4 ton with the 6.6 gas burner it does not have afm system. If you do decide to buy a 5.3 or 6.2 truck with dynamic or afm the afm needs to be deleted in the computer asap. It will prevent the afm lifters from sticking as they are never commanded to hydraulically collapse or go into 4 cylinder mode. The only other issues I’ve seen is heavy carbon build up in the heads even on low mileage trucks. It is caused by the high pressure direct fuel injection design.
I assume it’s the 8spd. My 6spd has been rock solid. So has the 4.8 l with no AFM.
Boy as a Chevy Truck Legend I hate to read all this. GM better understand how damaging this can be and get a handle on it.
My 2021 Silverado had to have the engine torn down and all the lifters and a pushrod replaced at 7500 miles. I don’t trust it to go on long trips. Way to go General Motors
Driving GM Products since 1977 never anything major. 21 Sierra 5.3 Beautiful and reliable. BTW get your Shot / Boost
Not just a GMC truck has problems .their 2014s 2011 all the way up to 2019 SUVs have major engine transmission and timing chain problems I’ve got a 2014 GMC terrain in the shop right now fixing to have a whole engine replaced because the stupid engineers thought it was cute to put an elbow in the PCV valve system which collects water and condensation during the winter months causing the PCV valve to freeze building up crankcase pressure blowing out the rear main seal draining all the oil in the engine. no engine check lights no engine warning lights came on because the sensors are set too low. by the time the oil reaches that level the top of the engine is destroyed good job engineers of GMC do any of y’all really know how to build a true engine . vehicle didn’t even make it to 100,000 miles GMC just turned the nose up to it
YUP . But the exec.s still look forward to their bonus’s. They love the fan fare for new “concepts” and models. But seem to ignore the rest. That is, until the press takes it on.
OOoo a real “FOX” head speaks, Nonsense . What a dolt ! Get a jab. Save the planet, you coward. Now lets return to GM bashing or bragging.
Why do antivaxxers feel the need to turn this into the to jab or not to jab page ? To the dolt telling us to piss off Stop facing the wind it’s really “clouding” you judgement and leaving stains.
GM hasn’t produced a good vehicle in decades. As for the vax, spoken like a true NAZI. If you want to kill yourself with an experimental drug, go right ahead and do it. Just remember that your life insurance won’t pay out and neither will your health insurance. Good luck bud.
Re the freaking weirdos comment… Amen brother.
Spoken like a true believer … In drinking urin that is
I’m currently leasing a 2020 silverado 5.3l v8. In its 1st 4000 miles the truck bent a rod and destroyed all the rockers on one side of the engine. Was replaced for free but had an issue getting a rental due to the chip issue.
GM has been building engines for some 80 plus years and still can’t seem to get it right. Take that plus personal experience with a perfectly good Grand Am I had to toss, because the theft lock engaged and couldn’t get it fixed without costly repairs. A GMC Savannah that also had its theft lock engaged, yet this time I got lucky finding a company who sells a handy little box to override it. And last, a Buick Rendezvous with the door ajar light that activated and despite money dumped in to turn it off … Still, the light won’t go out. Electrical after electrical after electrical issue.
GM’s hoping people will be interested in thier EV’s when they come out? Forget that noise. Will not touch another GM. GM could give me a free one and I would still return it.
My opinion. Cheapest electrical on the market. Never had one without sensor issues either.
I would never buy another GM product again. I have a 2018 Sierra 1500 with the large engine, 6 speed. Nothing but problems. Now that it just went out of warranty, I’ve had to replace a electronic shutter module, $1200, and just last week, torque converter and pump, $2600. My neighbor got lucky, same truck, but his went out twice during warranty. Poor quality and they, GM, know it. Should be recalled and fixed right! Goodbye GM.
I have a chevy 5.3 270,000 miles not one issue
