The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are hugely popular pickup trucks, but now, both nameplates have been singled out as having major engine issues and reliability problems.
Per a recent post from non-profit consumer organization Consumer Reports, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are tied as the recent models most likely to exhibit major engine problems. The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are both pointed out as “they’re the same trucks sold under different brands,” according to Consumer Reports.
Consumer Reports listed several vehicles most likely to exhibit reliability issues in the organization’s 17 key trouble spots, which, in addition to Major Engine issues, also includes Engine Cooling issues, Major Transmission issues, Drive System issues, Electrical System issues, and Climate System issues.
Notably, the 2020 Buick Encore GX was the vehicle most likely to have brake system issues.
The Consumer Reports ranking is based on reliability data collected via Consumer Reports member surveys, and focuses on 1- to 3-year-old models.
According to Consumer Reports, 4 percent of Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra owners reported some kind of Major Engine issue, including full engine replacements, as well as cylinder head-related issues. Major engine issues include an engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head problems, head gasket problems, turbocharger or supercharger problems, and timing chain or timing belt problems.
Overall, Consumer Reports gives the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 one out of five with regard to reliability scoring.
As a reminder, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 were both offered prior to the full model refresh introduced for the 2022 model year, as well as before the pre-refresh 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited and 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited. Engine options for the 2021 model year include turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV3 gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax.

How did things go from problems with the Silverado and the Sierra trucks to politics. Please stick to the vehicles issues. This not a platform to be discussing politics. Most of your comments are so wrong and misleading.
I will never buy another GMC Sierra ever again the rest of my life, shakes your teeth out even at low speed, took it back to dealership until the warranty ran out and then was left to deal with it, even called corporate gmc ((( nothing))) the truck has sucked since I bought it new in 2016!!!
Agree they will not stand behind their product!
Ritchie download the TSB for the 8 speed and make sure they perform what it says.I just helped a buddy out with it and the dealership tried to put DEX VI in it which was the wrong fluid from the start, they need to extract 20 quarts of DEX VI and put in 20 quarts of Mobil 1 HP blue label,we caugt them red handed trying to pull a fast one.The dealerships are to blame for most of this stuff, not doing their job.The service advisor didn’t even know about the TSB let alone which proper fluid it needs.Awful.I had it done on my Camaro SS and it is better than new,my issue showed up at 20K and the car is at 39+K and no issues since.Look up NHTSA NA-18-355,I think that is the right one.
Sorry 18-NA-355
I’ve got a 2020 LT Z71 Chevrolet Silverado. This is my third Z71 Chevrolet Silverado. I had an 08 and a 2016. Everyone bought and paid for. I just got a few more payments on my 2020 Chevy Silverado. It has given ZERO problem. No leaks, No knocks, No noises.
Apparenty all these engine problems are on a small few 2021 Chevrolet Silverado models.
Wait till the Trans goes out, or ya shifter sticks in p..
I have a 2022 GMC Sierra that has been in the shop more then in my driveway. The parts are you back order.
Wow that sucks! Have they given you a loaner at least?
2022 Silverado 1500 LTD here, 5.3 ecotec, standard 6 trans and 4,083 miles on it. Going back to the dealer after work today. Severe popping AND clacking. Essentially undriveable.
I was hoping to read more truck comments, but noticed a lot of political. So here we go. No body pays attention to data anymore. All they want to hear is what makes them feel good. That’s why the rest of the world is laughing at us. Take some time to look at what is real. Don’t just watch your favorite news channel. Actually do some thinking for yourself. Oh wait, that takes time from your games. I wish I grew up in the 50’s. People took responsibility for their actions.
Is this a political forum or about GM. Quit crying about politics. Would have been nice if they stated specifics about which engine and transmission.
I know. I’ve tried leading them back to the “general” problem. But the weiners and whiners keep circling back.
All these new trucks are crap!
I am on my 2nd Ram 2500, both have electrical issues!!!
My 2019 powerwagon was horrible on fuel and my 6.7L diesel although better on fuel has electrical issues and recalls…don’t buy any of these!
I’m selling it and going back to my 2006 chevy. It runs flawlessly and starts every day.
Need pulled off auto market and gm needs shut down for being scam artist..Love that Chevy is so junky they had to make a GMC to trick peep who didn’t want a pos Chevy!
Actually you would be the delusional one for not being able to admit the facts at hand sir thank you!
Corey is dilusional,I have driven Chevrolet exclusively since I was 16 and have never had to walk instead of driving, can’t say that for the POS Frauds that companies buy which 2 Rangers damn near killed me(stuck accelerator pedal&manual Toyo Koyo transmission locked up at 70mph!) and left me walking and/or needing a ride.Go pedal that garbage somewhere else.I only drive Chevrolet and won’t buy other garbage. If you get a bad one it happens, read other car manufacturers forums and you will see the same stuff.
I know a guy who loves the Toyota Tundra,he had a 2010 that lost an engine with 99K on it and he went and bought another one.I know Ram owners that have had AFM engine failures and stay loyal to their preferred brand.Go try another and maybe you have a good experience,or maybe you get a bad vehicle again. This stuff happens and blaming an entire company with over 100 years of making great vehicles is ridiculous.Search other forums and you will see issues everywhere, doesn’t matter who the brand is.There is no perfect car or truck out there,if you believe that it is pure fantasy.I worked for multiple auto parts chains and parts are on the shelves for a reason-stuff fails.Car manufacturers have outsourced a big portion of their parts to global parts sources so the quality control is out of their hands.Melling makes the GM lifters, the VLOM that is generally blamed as the real cause of AFM engine failures is made by someone else, but people almost always blame the lifters which is incorrect. The days of a car manufacturers being completely in house production are long gone.Good luck finding a perfect vehicle.
Lots of different experiences. We left gm because of problems with our Saturn. We have since driven two Hondas over 150,000 miles with one trip to our dealer to replace a Takata airbag. We will stay with Honda. We are on our second Tesla. They are not as good in quality as Honda but were the only EV that was available. We will be looking at new brand EVs in 2024-25. Hopefully gm will improve their products by then. Competition will be good for buyers.
I have a friend Miguel who still drives his Saturn L200,379,000+ miles and counting.
My sister in law Donna bought a Honda Accord not too long ago and they all kinds of issues with it from power steering pump failures (2) to rack and pinion and excessive oil consumption and so on.They got rid of it after a year and bought a Hyundai Genesis,it started having issues and they got rid of that POS too. They wound up buying a Silverado that has over 200K on it and it still is a daily driver. They learned a lesson there. Also they have added a Mazda CX5 and no issues with it so far so there you go.
But supporting the company by buying their product even after “screwing” you repeatedly is by definition Crazy. They (ALL) the car companies knew there were problems. But you can’t pay yourself bonus’s based on sales if you hold production to wait for better parts to arrive. So they sell us a product, many of which have problems. To keep that gravy train rolling. To hell with the consumer, they’re stupid and will be loyal is their battle cry. Just stop buying new for a year and watch them panic. No bonus’s ? Might have to sell 1 of their yachts.
I don’t see GM “screwing” people any more than any other car builder right now. They are all killing us at the dealership. I’m in the market for a replacement for my 2001 Yukon (finally after 345K miles), but I refuse to commit until I see more units on the lots and more competition in pricing. And I’m a patient person.
Good luck! My GMC Savana with 202K has just been superb and I would buy another one in a heartbeat but they have a reputation for being reliable. I don’t know about the Yukon but not so with the 1500 Silverado. As much as I’d like to get one I won’t.
We’re looking at turning in our 2012 Fusion Hybrid, which has been a very reliable car, for an SUV EV that can get us 250 miles of so. We can effectively use that for my wife’s commuting and getting back and forth from just about anywhere in So Cal. And I was looking at the Yukon with the Duramax for any longer trips we might take and for my work needs. I just wish it was shorter. We’re empty nesters and don’t need the additional room in the third row and rear end. I can plan ahead for the 150K belt replacement.
Try reading the whole thing. I said and referred to ALL manufactures. Yes they ALL can produce CRAP. But when they know it’s CRAP and wait until the bad press gets so great that they can NOT ignore the problems anymore, then they are screwing you over. They Knew there were problems and kept supplying dealers vehicles with Known defective parts. If the bonus is based on sales… Well they aren’t going to give a damn until it also costs them. So hold off buying new for a year or so. That will affect their bottom lines and thus bonus’s. On All the car companies building CRAP!
2020 Chevy 2500 gas 4×4 only warranty work or attempted was on the steering system. On warranty service trip #4 a cooling line had the slightest leak, the whole display went out. 34k … been driving the “loaner” for- you won’t believe this- 64 days … that’s correct – this last service visit has been going for over 2 months- per Chevy “we currently don’t have the parts in stock nor are they available to pull from the production line. We don’t know when they will be available. Turns out -if your under warranty vehicle has been been in the shop for 30 days in a year or the dealer has had at least 4 attempts to correct the problem, it qualifies as a Lemon under law. Gm either purchases the vehicle back and reimburses all your costs including TTL or they must replace with a brand new like vehicle or better at no cost. The day I called
My attorney he said I was the 3rd person today on gm claims(gm also has to pay your legal fees)
Sorry for you – but that’s a pretty good incentive for GM to get its act together and focus more on quality control.
