The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are hugely popular pickup trucks, but now, both nameplates have been singled out as having major engine issues and reliability problems.
Per a recent post from non-profit consumer organization Consumer Reports, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are tied as the recent models most likely to exhibit major engine problems. The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are both pointed out as “they’re the same trucks sold under different brands,” according to Consumer Reports.
Consumer Reports listed several vehicles most likely to exhibit reliability issues in the organization’s 17 key trouble spots, which, in addition to Major Engine issues, also includes Engine Cooling issues, Major Transmission issues, Drive System issues, Electrical System issues, and Climate System issues.
Notably, the 2020 Buick Encore GX was the vehicle most likely to have brake system issues.
The Consumer Reports ranking is based on reliability data collected via Consumer Reports member surveys, and focuses on 1- to 3-year-old models.
According to Consumer Reports, 4 percent of Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra owners reported some kind of Major Engine issue, including full engine replacements, as well as cylinder head-related issues. Major engine issues include an engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head problems, head gasket problems, turbocharger or supercharger problems, and timing chain or timing belt problems.
Overall, Consumer Reports gives the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 one out of five with regard to reliability scoring.
As a reminder, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 were both offered prior to the full model refresh introduced for the 2022 model year, as well as before the pre-refresh 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited and 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited. Engine options for the 2021 model year include turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV3 gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax.
Both pickups ride on the GM T1 platform.

Lol what else is new. Cheap hardly efficient virtually runs on luck every time.
Well I guess I’ve had a lot of luck with Chevrolet over the years!
The lie detector test determined that was a lie
So far my 2014 1/2 ton 2wd Sierra 5.3 6 speed is doing ok. However, our company has 3 2017 and newer 1/2 to. 4×4’s with the 5.3 and the newer automatic that have had transmissions replaced.
I had lifter failure on my 2021 Silverado LTZ 6.2. The dealer also replaced the radiator. After my 1 FREE oil change my truck leaked oil in my driveway. I was told it was a DEFECTIVE oil filter. I have had to add oil 2 times now but NO EXPLANATION to where the oil is going.
Why don’t it say which engine/transmission combo failed? Just saying 4% of people surveyed had major issues is not very good data. My 75 year old mother almost traded in her Saturn because it had “major” electrical issues but the “major” issue was a dead battery in the key FOB, cause it was 15 years old. I feel like people doing these surveys should meet some sort of criteria, at minimum know which engine you bought…
I also had a 2021 Chevy Silverado still have it 6.2 L I had lifter failure there is a defect in the lifters they were trying to tell me they were only going to replace the damaged lifters but they finally ended up replacing all 16 because I did not know which group of lifters were bad so they replaced it with lifters that they knew were good it did not have defects so now I’ve had the truck back for about a week they also had to replace a bent rod which is normal when you have lifter failure so hopefully I will have no more problems but that is a issue with a lot of the Chevys 5.3 and the 6.2 I did investigating on it there is a class action lawsuit that has been filed it was in December 22nd of last year
Same, Full lifter replacement and AFV modules, at 2015 65k on 6.2 and 8-spd. Came in with tick (way more than normal chatty lifters, lol). Also just had the Mobil fluid flush done, on MY dime 🙁
This is a real issue, I have a 2021 Tahoe, 5.3v8 and had a lifter failure at 18k miles, dealership replaced 8 lifters and bent push rod. Also had the same issue on my 2014 sierra truck 6.2 at around 125k miles. This is a real problem and I won’t buy another GM product with AFM/DFM.
Everyone’s a critic ; they hear a rumour and shoot from the hip , the reason there’s no specifics , they don’t know- it’s hear say , most info is gathered @ Starbucks, Tim Horton’s or other reputable sources !
ROD ! I think you mean (push tube)
Gm has issue with there lifters and bent rods! My truck had just over 10,000 kms ! Took it in because it was running bad. Sent me home after reprogramming it. Next day , had to replace all lifters and bent rod!!
So I bought a new 3500 in 2001 had the 6 L in it. From the start it used oil bad, the dealership wanted me to keep records of use. No signs of leaks or smoke by the way. So l as a mechanic I thought was it something to do with engine assembly or brackin. So just gy changes I added hyper lube. The reason why is it claimed to seal engine rings I a short time it stopped using oil. I have many cars some sit they all get hyper lube.. I swear by it for a few reasons.
2018 Sierra grocery list of failures:
62k miles: Water Pump(bearing squeal)
67k miles: Oil Pump Solenoid, requires R and R of Oil Pump
80k miles: rear main seal
107k miles: Torque converter.
All just outside of warranty. $6500.00 in total for repairs.
Diagnosis: GM POS
Remedy: 2023 Tundra
There you go !
Good luck
GM is junk. Stopped buying there products years ago . I’ve had 4 Toyotas and not one issue
And the lie detector test determined your comment was the true lie. I just traded in an ‘18 Camaro SS I bought Mar 2020 with 16k on the clock in with 86k on it just last week and my engine did not give me ☝🏽 one single problem. Not a single oil leak, cylinder misfire, engine knock/tick, nada, 👌🏽 zero issues whatsoever.
Never tracked the dam thing but I did drive it spiritedly on a daily basis and other routine oil changes, new tires, and 2 front brake jobs, it was a real champ in the reliability department. could not have engineered a better product for us, and the only reason I traded it in was because I was getting up there in mileage and I wanted my first truck.
Ended up going with a new Ram 1500 because Dodge had better incentives, a better interior, and more standard horsepower with the base 5.7 liter V8. But given 100k miles plus resale values, number of late and old model Silverados on the roads here in Texas, and owner feedback, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that I would’ve been getting an exceptionally reliable product. You get a lot of bang for your buck in a Chevy, they’re literally built to last
Built to last…must mean the body cause the 4l60e transmission is straight junk…I know from first hand expirence after a 04 Silverado an 95 Sierra. I mean that says it all right there…ford doesn’t have a fmc, dodge don’t have a dmc…chevy does because the first one was junk so they had make a second in disguise…gmc..get my chevy!
I have just had an engine Failure in my 6.2 l , main bearing 47??? Km,2021 Trail Boss now concidering an upgrade to another Chev, due to the fact it’s a better ride than the Ford and not all of us can aford the fuel for the 5.7 hemi 🐖, plus with Dodge has a higher center of gravity thus in real bush condition the Dodge can’t compare.
Buy a Tundra if you don’t want the Ram
People buy GM stuff because they get pulled in how they look . They are nothing but problems and don’t hold there value even close to what a Toyota does . I’ve owned several Toyota s with absolutely no grief . Now will the GM truck last a long time …… possibly but only after you dump tons of money replacing
Motor parts
Front end parts
Transmissions
Ripped drivers seats ( with not even 60 k miles )( I have never had a ripped Toyota seat )
Burning oil
Rattle on start up
Ask me how I know
The list goes on
Stay away
Give a Tundra a try and guess what they are made in Texas by Americans
And at the end of the day when you go to sell it years from now you will be very much surprised how much it’s worth. Its put a smile on my face several times .
100% agree. It breaks my heart because my dad worked for GM for 37 years. I WANT to like them but they just keep putting a garbage product that “looks great” on the market. My last Toyota was a 94’ pickup with a 22RE 4 banger. I gave up trying to wear it out at 220k miles. Wasn’t happening lol. My 2018 Sierra? Made in Mexico. Buy American? Buy a Toyota.

I have a GMC 2021 2500 6.6 runs like a champ
Nicest truck I have ever had. Could not ask for more. I also have a 2000 chevy 1500 5.3 260,000 miles still going strong WORK TRUCK
2500 Is for vacation towing camping trailer
Ward how many miles to you have on your 2021 truck now? Is it a gas or diesel?
2021 6.2 gas it has 48008 km’sso approx 28000miles?
I gave my 2000 Silverado (5.3) with 134k to FIL, & bought a new 2015 LTZ 5.3 only to have the lifter and cam go out at 47k miles in August of 2022. Dealer wanted 10k just to replace the one lifter in Corpus Christi,Tx. , where I purchased it new.
Local mechanic says parts are back ordered.
Same dealer keeps sending me text saying they will buy it the way it is for half of what it was worth wholesale. The service rep said his 2021 trucks lifters went out as well.
If you like the truck when running fine. I would instead put that outrageous 10k estimate price towards a repair at a local reputable shop, to have an aftermarket cam and lifters installed, with a displacement on demand delete. That might be HALF the price!
The Toyota lovers that invade this forum can shove it! They have a laundry list of issues on their models, wouldn’t own one if it was given to me.CR must hire Toyota buyers to invade competitor forums to keep their biased opinions and lies going, obviously in the pockets of Toyota.Have fun with your turbo V6 on your Tundra…which in AZ will overheat just like the Fords(Frauds).I have owned 33 Chevrolet vehicles and not one ever made me walk.I currently own and drive 5 of them…2019 Custom Trail Boss,2017 Camaro SS,2014 Impala LT,2000 Corvette and a 1984 K5 Blazer.I owned 2 Toyotas and they were OK but no comparison to my favorite brand. There are remedies to avoid the AFM issues and oil blow bye and cost about $300 or less but people are soft nowadays and have their nose stuck in the air.Translation: Most people won’t do what it required anymore and want to b!tch about everything and anything.
Sorry buddy
You don’t know what your talking about. Toyota has a way better manufacturing line
Read about it sometime
What ever issues you are talking about I don’t know or really care . But I can tell you this , we have several trucks that are at super high mileage with almost no issues through out the ownership . For me the proof is in the pudding . But your opinion is your opinion and mine is mine . I am done with GM stuff period .
I have a 5.3 V8 247,000 miles no problems what so ever, Also have 2021 2500 6.6 gas no problems and I think it is a wonderful truck I ordered it the way I wanted it.
Ok so FOUR PERCENT of the folks who actually responded had “serious engine issues”. But not a single word about what they were? We’re they all in the same engine? Or the issues were spread out throughout the line of available engines? The whole article sound hyperbolic!
Consumer Reports has no business reporting on vehicles. Stick to tv’s and blenders.
yea, and your President can’t string 1 sentence together without help from teleprompter. He also said he will not shut down the economy, but he will shut down the virus… Well, guess he did the opposite now didn’t he??
Maybe if your cult got vaxxed, we wouldn`t have that problem, would we?
Maybe if your DNA altering, aborted fetal cell containing, gene therapy worked as advertised… You people are all suffering from MASS FORMATION PSYCHOSIS!! IF YOU EVER WONDERED HOW GERMANS WENT ALONG WITH HITLER, NOW YOU KNOW!! Dumb unto death.
Yea FBI , DOJ are all wrong ! And this draft dodger , who lies every time he opens his mouth and has countless business failures is who they believe 🤣
If I bought three of something that didn’t work, I wouldn’t blame my neighbor for not buying it, I would ask for a REFUND.
If I bought three of something that didn’t work, I wouldn’t blame my neighbor for not buying it, I would ask for a REFUND.
No he didn’t. The economy is having problems in part because of people like you won’t wear masks and get vaccinated. Thanks a lot more for making the whole pandemic much worse than it had to be – and that includes its economic costs
Then what’s your answer to how everything has turned out in Florida? Where schools stayed open, busnisses stayed open, the whole State economy has thrived! While the democRat controlled states are all in turmoil with folks minds filled with hate! With their children far behind and businesses failing.
Joe Biden has killed more people in 2021 then 2020. Joe Biden said in 2020 that anyone with that many deaths is unfit to be president but now joe has exceeded that number. Joe Biden said once you get vaccinated you can’t catch covid he lied. Joe Biden should resign immediately for being a murderer.
It would be nice to keep politics out of this forum, but in response to “Concerned for my country”, No, the ones dying are the ignorant ones who believe quacks and political hacks over science and common sense. You can still get infected if vaccinated, but you stand an almost total chance of little or no hospitalization or death. The murderers are the anti vaxxers and the ones spreading it.
My president said otherwise liar. President Biden said I couldn’t get covid if I got the vaccine are you claiming the president does not follow science then?
Concerned for my country is running low on brain cells.Lay off the crack that Trump fed you. This is an automotive forum, save it for your dark web junkies planning another Jan.6, freaking wierdos.
It appears that this form has gone political, so I best get out of Here. Just remember, people of Ukraine don’t have the time to batch about the vehicles, colour of skin etc! Their to busy just trying to stay alive!
“During a July 2021 CNN town hall, U.S. President Joe Biden falsely stated that “You’re not going to get COVID if you have these vaccinations,” and “If you’re vaccinated, you’re not going to be hospitalized, you’re not going to be in the ICU unit, and you’re not going to die.” “During the same public appearance, Biden also stated, accurately, that vaccinated people are less likely to catch the virus than unvaccinated people and, if they do catch it, are less likely to get sick.” I never said Biden said anything about it one way or another. I said to follow the science, not politics.
It’s extremely hard to follow the science when it changes daily. They initially said you don’t need mask then you do then you don’t again then cloth masks are fine now all of a sudden they are not, so witch is it? And people wonder why other don’t care anymore. If you don’t know what the science is then don’t say anything at all be straight up about it say we don’t have the information yet don’t people one thing then change your tune 2 weeks later. These people are suppose to be the “leaders” here are they not? Does the cdc not stand for centers of disease control? When people look to them for what they are suppose to do any they get it wrong it’s not a good look. But I’m not going to argue about it I mind my business I don’t care what anyone else does. People wanna freak out about this but yet these same exact people know very well each year older people die from the flu but do they get the flu shot to help those older people then? Absolutely not.
It happened again the conversation was engine problems. Yet here we are shifted back to COVID and Presidents. Me I dropped $8000.00 USD on engine lifters problems. Plus it took three GD trips back to the Chevy House. A random person told me he shifted away from the engine that dropped from V8 to V4. That fixed his problems.
Richard I would get rid of that if you can. That’s crazy to have that many issues good grief.
This is a lesson in how science works, compressed into a short time frame. And those that work daily in immunology were quite frank that we are seeing new variants and they were not certain how the vaccines would respond. In addition, they were frank about how long the vaccines would provide what degree of protection. But the bottom line, which anti-vaxxers don’t seem to want to accept, is that they do provide protection and save lives. And they aren’t causing death, which so many ghouls are promoting.
Stop it we have people on the Supreme Court lying out right saying 100k kids are in the hospital with covid which is bogus. The number is not even 3500 total we have the cdc making up things about certain strains that are supposedly the dominant strain only to come out and say they were wrong. You wanna get vaxxed then do it but don’t hate on someone else because they have concerns that can’t be answered. Nobody knows what the long term side effects are and they won’t know for a long time. Anytime a person claims they are science well brother that person is a POS
Sotomayor stated that we had 100K kids with serious infections, not in the hospital. I think that most parents that have kids with covid would regard it as serious – and we have that many pediatric infections. It’s no worse than Alito stating that “people say” that the vaccines result in adverse effects, knowing how broad a term “adverse” is and loaded his implication was.
I’d say I stood little chance for hospitalization, even without vaccine.
And biden is an old fart that together with OBoonma should have their pension removed for helping flush America down the drain!
proDigit most of us love our Democracy and you will never be successful in removing it.
The science says that you can spread the new omicron variant even if you have been vaccinated.
Get vaxxed if you want, but please keep your politics and your beliefs from judging people that don’t.
The science says that the possibility of spreading infection and contracting a serious or fatal infection is greatly reduced with full vaccination. Anyone who doesn’t get vaxxed is dragging this pandemic out and putting themselves and others at risk due to the possibility of future variants. And I’m happy to tell you and anyone else that.
Pfizer’s own CEO won’t take his product and says it doesn’t work. Piss off!
Are all you lefties this dumb? You’re regurgitating CNN talking points as if they’re facts. Have you ever had an original thought? If you’re vaxxed how does me not being vaxxed hurt YOU?! I’ve had COVID, my natural immunity is 27x better than your vax, just ask the Pfizer CEO how well the vax works. Not only will he not take his own product, but he openly says IT DOESN’T WORK!! You’re a dolt.
I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you!! CHEAP!!
My 2015 Silverado LTZ 6.2l 4×4 made it 117k miles and cylinders 4 and 7 lifters failed. Dealership wanted 8k to put the same crap lifters back in. I said no thanks. I did the AFM delete myself for under 2k bucks. I used a stock grind BTR cam , LS7 lifters and it’s running better than it ever has. The lifter failure is a symptom of an oil pressure issue, I believe the gasket on the cam thrust plate was bad , which caused a drop in oil pressure. I bought this truck with 70k miles on it and have had zero issues . These 6.2s are bullet proof if not for the DOD ,AFM,DFM , it should be an option , not standard. I have a 15 4 cyl Colorado , iI bought this truck because I wanted the 6.2. I use my truck for work as a Mason , so it gets a work out. One more thing , put a air -oil separator or catch can in your PVC system. The intake , intake ports , combustion chambers and piston tops were filthy. I have built many engines in 61 years and this is the nastiest intake system I have ever seen. You could eat of the inside of the engine , spotless. The PVC system needs help. All in all its been a great truck for me and since I have corrected the two faults I have had , I’m looking for many more trouble free years and miles.
And the odd toaster !
what type of PRES do you have an Idiot that is tearing this country down
I have a 2021Silverado 1500 Ltz Z71 5.3 ,no problems 19000 miles
I had a 2018 Sierra Denali with only 22k miles & the dealership had to replace the Torque converter, several bearings, gaskets that leaked & a drive shaft!! I personally spoke to the dealership mechanic who showed my all the faulty parts & said it’s all due to the dynamic fuel management system.
I traded it in for a new 2021 Denali that thanks to the “chip” shortage, my new truck has deleted that management system!
Luckily I get GMS pricing!!
Ps. The dealership actually gave me $2k less than I purchased the 2018 four years prior!
Haha, your mechanic has no idea what he was talking about and do you for believing that. Glad you got the truck without the DFM, oh wait, all the parts are still in there… #clueless
2021 Chev 6.2 was a main bearing issue? GM is going to replace it! But my new engine is at this point a block of steel with a number on it , on the plant floor. I do hope it has all 2023 up grades as it’s hard to beat the Cadillac ride,
I’ve both new GM since 1971 Chevelle 402 SS and since have bought a lot and have never had a motor or drivetrain problem, drive a 2021 Silverado Crewcab Z71 6.2 now and love it
I have the 2021 Silverado eco diesel with 32k miles and have had no issues. It rides like a dream and gets great mpg.
I got over 300,000 on my 1993 350 gas engine, and never had to do any engine work, including fuel injectors!!!! Only had new ac, a 3 clutches!!!! When I sold it, it was still running GREAT!
Jerry You probably should go back under your bridge
Cry more
I own my house, but it sounds like you are projecting do you live in a trailer? Oh wait you must be in a tent in some homeless encampment I’m sorry about your situation maybe you should make better decisions in life and stop being a bum looking for handouts.
We traded in our “Hunk a Junk” 2016 GMC Yukon Denali bc it was in the dealership shop constantly while under warranty. We weren’t gonna be caught dead in that car when that warranty expired. Mostly transmission issues/ they wouldn’t replace it! Said we would just have to live with it!
Just had the lifters replaced on one side of my 2021 Silverado at 12,000 miles, seems to be an ongoing issue they said, wish they would have replaced both sides so, guess I will hope the other side don’t fail.
If that was related to the AFM, (active fuel management), that has lifters that are controlled by the computer to shut off. Then you need to find the fuse in the box and remove it, so they are never under that control again, if that’s even possible. Or get a tuner to shut it down.
They will.
@ Jerry
Cheap heap every valve’s rotten oil leaks exhaust too. Let the fangirls downvote this.
Why do idiots that like other brands of trucks even read this website? I don’t waste my time reading about other brands of trucks that I’m not going to buy! Must have too much free time on their hands.
Cause that’s what the site was intended for but some Chevy idiots can’t read that’s why they had make gmc… Title blog Chevy Silverado And GMC Sierra Have Major Engine Problems, Says Consumer Reports!
They also seem to have a major problem with fuel economy with the base entry level 4 cylinder and 5.3 for 2022. For the third time the 5.3’s MPG numbers have dropped and the 4 cylinder is now rated for a very dismal 17/20 instead of 19/22 for 4X4 models which are the volume trucks sold. The 5.3 is now down to 15/20 instead of 16/21 from last year and 16/22 before that. Ironically the much larger 6.2 rates the same as the 5.3 at 15/20 and supposedly gets the same highway as the base 2.7T. Insanity! These numbers put GM dead last, diesel aside which is just sad considering they used to be one of the highest.
EPA cycle changed. Real world the Chevy V8 trucks do quite well for owners.
I’m curious what all these issues are CR claims, the lifter issues are known, and there was no doubt a bad batch of springs form the supplier that when into delivered vehicles for the 2021MY.
The Weirdos who say they’re getting 25-28 mpg on their 5.3s and 6.2s boast about this without disclaiming that they’re using the last 25 miles instead of lifetime mileage or 400 miles which is a more realistic mpg
I don’t know of anyone stating that. I’ll easily hit 21mpg at 65mph over 100+ miles with speed ups, slow downs, some traffic
With my 10 year old 5.3 4×4 crew cab LTZ on 33 LT all terrain tires, 2.5″ lift, with no direct injection, 6spd, and 3.43 gearing. And with cylinder deactivation turn off. My truck was rated at 21 sure, but that was on lighter narrower and smaller diameter factory 31 P-metric tires and cylinder deactivation and 3.23 gears.
My good friend gets better mileage than I do with his 2020 6.2.
I have another friend with a 2019 5.3 8spd. He got the reflash TSB and new trans fluid and has zero issues with that 8spd. He tows his 3000lb boat every weekend and a tandem axle utility trailer at least once a month.
2015 GMC 5.3 4×4. Get 24 consistently at 70mph on the Highway. On flat, back country roads doing 60, get 28-30 easy. It all depends on how you drive it. GM doesn’t underrate their MPG’s
Well I don’t want to jinks myself but I’ve owned a 2015 GMC Sierra SLT since I bought it brand new and I really cannot complain about the mileage I get on the highway, I average 20 to miles easy and I agree for most of the time it has to do with the way you drive. I never floor it when taking off from dead stop and I’ve always done the proper maintenance which means a whole lot.
Inst or Avg, pump or DIC calc’d?
28-30 is extremely hard to fathom unless from the instantaneous DIC and not average over a meaningful trip
Sorry, this is news?
That is a very troubling story. Chevy trucks have always been dependable. What a shame.
Are you the same username “Jake” that said last week they have the world’s fastest naturally aspirated 6.2L truck?
Here we go again the greatest slogan of all time the electric Silverado is faster then the 6.2 lmao. Ding ding ding round 1 begins
Lol well claiming a 6.2 crew cab 4×4 Silverado will do 0-60mph in under 4.5 seconds can’t be forgotten.
Just like the guy yesterday saying you can casually drive through 4.5 FEET of snow.
Lol where are these people from. Gotta be impressionable 12 year olds with BS’r dads
Over what distance driven? Best I’ve gotten is 21mpg over a 400 mile trip back from Colorado that was a lot of downhill driving. I’ve got a 2014 5.3 GMC SLT 4×4. Since I’ve changed to more aggressive tires its now 15mpg on my best 400 mile trips.
2017 Silverado SLT 5.3l 2 wheel drive with 22″ tires. Best Ive ever got was 21mpg most all down hill. Average 15-17 city, lucky if I ever break 20 mpg on highway. speed is 65-75 max
I d sure love to get the numbers others are claiming
I did a trip from Chicago to Nashville in my 2014 Sierra 6.2 and manually calculated the MPG and round trip was 24mpg. I was not doing 55mpg either. It varied 65-80mph there and back. Now my truck has a 4in lift and 35in tires and I still get 19-20mpg on highway trips. My speedometer is corrected to the tires also and AFM is disabled.
GMguy-
I can get 25mpg on road trips if I keep it at 70mph or under. 2018-5.3 Silverado Crew Cab (4WD). Have done this numerous times. Yes-lifetime mpg is lower due to city driving and short hops.
My best tank is 28.4 mpg calculated at the pump. That was on a trip from West Texas to South Texas, approximately 300 miles. I drove 65 mph without a/c and had a 10 to 15 mph tailwind. Elevation change was about 1800 ft.
My truck is a 2017 Sierra SLT 6.2L 2WD with the 8-speed auto. I had Michelin Premier tires on factory 20″ wheels at the time.
On a 200+ mile two way trip filling up at the same pump, I can get up to 26.5 mpg at 65 mph without a/c depending on conditions and tires. My DIC does read about 1.7 mpg high which is why I always calculate at the pump. FWIW my best 25 mile is 41.2 mpg, best 50 mile is 34.8 mpg and best 400 mile is 27.7 mpg, obviously minus the 1.7 mpg that it reads high.
As for the article, I’ve had no engine problems but did have to have the trans flushed to the new fluid after the torque converter started slipping at 36K miles. I now have 123K+ and no issues.
Let’s see where do I begin, first of all we purchased a 2021 brand knew 6 months ago and we had to take it back to the dealership and guess what what kind of bad news we received that it was the lifters and that their were no parts that we had to wait until they received the parts. This happened a week before Thanksgiving were now in January last week to inform us they received the parts, they had three of the same truck GMC 1500 AT4 waiting on parts too for the same problem?
We purchased this vehicle because we both retired and just wanted to travel and not have any issues or rent a vehicle when we went out of town. (it didn’t happened that way) as much as that truck and we have major engine problems and how many more times is it going to happen? Or what else is going to happen? You paid thousands of dollars to have GM put cheap parts and yet the CEO’s still knew about these problems and still made them? I guess we’re a statistics now! We heard from a GM person twice in November and have not heard from anyone from GM since.
So if anyone reads this if your thinking of purchasing a GMC AT4 DON’T!
You should really learn English before posting comments!
Poor frank is angry that gm makes crappy vehicles so he acts like he can’t understand what the person said.
Think of the time you will have to learn while your waiting for GM’s response.
what engine
If its the 2.7 turbo 4 banger it figures there will be problems. You don’t build a new full size pickup with a 4 cylinder engine.
Why ford has been doing it for years
what F150 engine is a 4 cylinder? nadda
The 2.7 Ecco boost and its great
And I have a 2021 GMC Sierra 2.7 turbo and it works great
So a rogue issue during a pandemic where supply chains, labor and workers are shirt and your going to whine and blame GM? All manufacturers can have issues, GM engines for the most part run 100’s of thousands of miles. Toyota as well has engine failures. GM like every other manufacturer can’t get parts, it sucks but happens. Nothing they can do about it, they don’t want your new truck to be sitting and not have parts. Was it the lifters or valve springs? The springs has a large bad batch from a supplier. Either way, sucks it happened but it is quite rare and in no way a reflection on GM building cheap unreliable engines, that just isn’t the case. Your whining is pandemic and supply/worker issues on why it’s taking so long. If this was fixed in two days you’d be happy as a clam and we’d never hear from you. Which BTW you never hear the good, only the bad from people, so think about that…
So a rogue issue during a pandemic where supply chains, labor and workers are short and your still making excuses for gm go figure. Sorry but they aren’t going to give you a job just because you a hill for them on here.
Shill for them on here.
All manufacturers have major issues from time to time. The important thing is how they handle them. If they have parts and are continuing to build new vehicles instead of fixing the ones they already sold and gave a warranty with they should be charged with fraud. If they can’t get parts that is out of their control and I’m sure they would like to have the parts for warranty work and to continue building new vehicles.
If the EPA cycle changed for rating GM why are all the other trucks from Ford, Ram Toyota and Nissan not affected? From what I have seen of incoming 2022’s they seem to have the same or better numbers than last year especially the new Tundra which now rates 17/23 for the volume 4X4 trucks with a twin turbo V-6!
Mainly for junky azz 4l60e trans which burn up 3-4 clutch packs cause can’t handle a work load
They were the best for year and years. This is my main reason for discounting all the other options but if they are dropping like this I guess that brings other options into play. I need to start researching the competition again.
Stop/start feature being discontinued due to chip shortage caused the fuel economy drop by one mpg. Other than that, any current 5.3 litre engines I’ve had ‘99&”21 have been great. CR publication should as previously stated stick to appliance reviews.
I’m curious what all these issues are CR claims, the lifter issues are known, and there was no doubt a bad batch of springs form the supplier that when into delivered vehicles for the 2021MY.
Evidently quality assurance engineers actually can’t work from home
You have no clue on the extent of the failed valve lifters, bent pushrods etc affecting thousands of owner.
It is not “just a bad batch of valve springs’!!! It has been happening for almost a Decade!
To what, 1%? Less likely. Of literally millions and millions of engines. Outside of the recent bad spring, I bet cheap a**es using conventional oil and long change intervals are more likely to experience failure.
Look how many private cars are Yukon/Tahoe/Escalade that sit idling for hours and hours over their life and don’t have lifter issues.
It definitely sucks to be an owner experiencing a failure, but odds are low.
It’s difficult to say, but our 2017 Silverado with the 5.3 was missing and losing power. Two dealers gave us a run around, so we got rid of it.
I’m sorry, but a 2 year old truck with 35,000 miles shouldn’t be idling like a Harley.
When I looked it up online I found pages and pages on the forums with people having similar and much worse problems as the trucks aged.
I have a 5.3 and it has 250,000 miles on it never had a problem
I also have a 2021 GMC 2500 with 6.6 V8 any issues with this engine?
I’ve had six new Silverado/Sierras from 2003 to 2020 all with the 5.3 and all have been wonderful. I got a 2022 Silverado HD with the Duramax in May. It is currently in the shop for the fourth time in 1800 miles throwing all kinds of codes. They are now saying it is the ECM. They don’t have any. They are on backorder. Two weeks at the dealership so far and waiting. No loaner due to supply chain. Dealer is also blaming GM for not letting them have loaners. It was hauled in once on a flat bed. I bought a new truck that has been to the dealership more times than to a gas station. I have nothing to drive. I have no ETA for it to be fixed. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with any of their trucks. Just because you haven’t been one of the unlucky ones so far doesn’t mean they are all great. The worst part is they are still using the parts they do have to continue building short and parking in fields instead of using those parts for warranty work!
Wow sorry to hear of your troubles with the diesel. I always wanted one, but never had a true need for one. Plus these new vehicles are so dam complex and complicated to the point you need to have special factory training just to work on them. Oh it’s easier than ever to diagnose what’s wrong, most of the time, but then you have to get the parts! There should be a law that forces manufacturers to stop production if just ONE vehicle is in for warranty work if the part is not available. Or be forced to pay a dealer to remove the part from inventory on the lot! As far as a diesel goes? Especially now with diesel fuel supplies at an all time low, (thank you bydone)! Not to mention at least $2.00/gal MORE than regular gas! When I can fill up my V6 4×4, Colorado at $3.30/gal, the increase in mileage even when towing is not great enough! With the diesel a Colorado like mine, towing a travel trailer like mine might get 15-18 mpg, while I’m getting 10-12. Or just commuting a diesel will get 28-32 highway, while I get 22-26. That’s not any incentive to drive a slower truck, while my gas powered Colorado does a good job! Although at twice the rpm’s. But I tow at a Cat Scale certified 10,250 lbs CGVW, at present with ease and the ability to get to an maintain all legal speeds, on all roads and grades, while just feathering the gas pedal, or not needing more than half throttle to merge with traffic under normal conditions.
This 100% is spot on. The failures are much smaller than what some try to make it appear. If it was a large scale issue they’d have a recall as the expense to repair consequent damage and their reliability perception as well as publicity would be detrimental, and it isn’t.
The valve springs were a different issue that many people just lable as “lifters”. Many of the failures seem to be tied to improper maintenance and the remaining is just a failure. It happens, it’s made by people and machines with tons of parts, things can be slightly off. A bore hole could be slightly off from a worn drill bit or casting making it easier to clog, who knows. It isn’t a huge issue.
Just like they recalled the ignition switch issue that killed over 10 people and injured hundreds more? Oh let me add they knew about that for over a decade in case you didn’t know.
Neither do you, you read a few pages on the forums (many of which are the same posters over and over) then go and make it sound like it’s a 50% failure rate. If it was a large issue GM would be doing a recall or fix of some sort.
I used to work at a large trucking company at corporate in the finance department and they had an expensive internal engine recall that they determined had to be at 4% or larger of a failure rate to recall based on costs as well as reliability perception studies. This lifter rate is low, probably less than 1%. Wonder what other manufacturers are having failures that seem large but that low. Ford and their turbo or intercoolers?
It’s the trans problems same as the one that has a pending suit on the 4l80e, gm can not accept responsibility for their mistakes if they did they be bankrupt. I got a trans filter and gasket from ac Delco and it’s split where the company placed a stamp in each corner which caused a leak and fried one trans. Swore never buy Chevy again and bought a damb gmc which is just as big of pos and in 5 months lost reverse and will not back up. If your vehicle is new well take that chit else where till hit 150,000 miles or so. When you have make a second make and model cause first is so big a pos then obviously you’re really screwing up. Dodge and Ford both do not have a DMC or fmc cause the first wS made close to right. Gm needs sued and shut down they have made my life hell for 2 years and can shove the piece of crap back where came from. As for all you others that have them fine built can and chevys well let’s trade for a week and see what ya got say then… Bet not a word!!! They’re liars, crooks, and thieves living off a unjust enrichment..
My 2021 just started having the loud engine knock. Only 7000 miles! I am 150 miles from home. Very very inconvenient!
No more GM products for me any more!!
I’ve got a 2014 GMC Sierra SLT All Terrain that I’ve replaced the AC compressor/condenser twice on. I was debating trading it in when it went out during the Texas summer a couple months ago for the second time. $2500 total between both repairs. I’m at 133k miles and shouldn’t be on a 3rd compressor. Also, this second time around they said the blender switch is bad. My driver side blows hot because of it. The passenger side blows freezing cold like it used to brand new. That’ll be another $500 for a $30 part when I finally decide to fix it. If I wasn’t tired of payments I would have traded it in the moment the compressor stopped working again.
Consumer Reports ranking are based in their very subjective survey which is sent to subscribers. GM would be doing themselves a favor getting rid of AFM/DFM and the 8 speed transmission.
Then without that tech you’d not have V8’s anymore, so pick your poison.
What is subjective about it? I get the survey – it asks which parts of the car you’ve had trouble with. The same survey gets sent out to Honda and Toyota owners as Chevy owners. and not all Toyotas get great reviews. The Tacoma stank after the new model came out some years ago. CR gives the 2500/3500 Silverado – different engine – a good reliability rating.
For many many months buyers of the General have been saying the same thing. Only now is C R taking the gags off ? Only now are they being assessed a 1 in 5 (likely because the rating doesn’t go lower). Now how long before some of the Generals trolls start tells us how wrong we are ? Crap is Crap ! We flush Crap! No one really wants to buy Crap ! Now we only need someone at the General who knows how to read and does.
This is funny, The survey focused on 1-3 year old models, so 2019 -2021. GM sold approximately 9million trucks silverado’s and Sierra’s all engines combined in Canada and America.
4 percent of that is 360,000 trucks. Thats not a big number in comparison to the sales number. How many percent of those issues are service negligence, small repair negligence, maintenance negligence and dummies that shouldn’t be driving in the first place 🤔. I’m very happy with GM over the years.
I dare say that quite a few of those were trucks using cheap oil and idling the vehicle a lot, which is terrible for getting soot into the oil on a direct injection engine.
I’ve had a couple afm engine in my family, and no issues. I know my story isn’t the same as everyones though. I did read an article put out by the manufacturer of the valve body that controls the afm where they had said that every single one that had failed and was sent in for analysis had a plugged oil screen. What the cause is could be neglect or a design flaw…i’m assuming more negligence that design though.
4 percent is a poor result quality. That is 40000 bad engines in a million. 6 sigma is less than 4 bad engines in a million in reference to the gold standard. It would be useful to compare GMs 4 percent to other makers. I am guessing for major truck producers 4 percent is the worst by a wide margin.
4% is a pretty high failure rate, but it’s 4% of CR subscribers surveyed, not 4% of every engine GM built.
Either a Gen.s troll or just very , very , very lucky. PS I don’t believe in “luck”.
Well that settles it!
GM’s days are numbered……in the low numbers!!!!!
I stopped reading consumer reports at least 25 years ago because their rating info is crap!
This seems less subjective than “rate your infotainment system from 1 to 10.”. This is more like “has your engine been replaced Yes or No”
Not surprised at all – they’ve been cutting the quality for years now. I’ve owned a 1989 c1500 (Silverado), a 2009 6.0L Silverado, and 2014 5.3L Silverado. The 2014 gave me problems from the go, but the other two were tanks
This is true across all makes and models because vehicles are tremendously more complicated now than they used to be.
Most people who recognize this tend to blame it on government regulations (emissions controls, for instance), but personally I believe consumer demand is a much greater influence. The most loaded vehicles are always the highest demand. Consumers drive manufacturers to make them more complicated in order to compete, which makes them inherently less reliable. Reliability being lower than it used to be is not necessarily indicative of lower quality standards. That’s only one possible explanation. The fact that there is an order of magnitude more potential points of failure on modern vehicles than older ones is a much more likely one. And, of course, the two are not mutually exclusive.
Even if every manufacturer today holds higher standards than they used to it is statistically probable that owners of newer vehicles will experience more problems than they would have with older vehicles.
I prefer the vehicles with fewer bells and whistles, just more to go wrong. I love my 2012 Silverado WT.
Someone with some sense. The more toys you build into a vehicle the more chances for failure there are.
I don’t know anyone who drives a chevy (or any amercian vehicle) that still subscribes to CR. I remember reading articles where the ratings of an f-150 or chev truck was rated poorly, even when the survey was pretty good. It read something like “although the survey numbers aren’t too bad, we still wouldn’t recommend due to reliability concerns”
That being said, if the AFM, DFM system gets removed, those engines are indestructible.
Playing the victim card…they’re biased against Chevy – that’s how to explain it! There’s a easier way: Chevy is making less reliable 1/2 tons than other manufacturers. I own a Chevy van, It’s been as solid as a rock and I would buy another one in a heartbeat but I wouldn’t take my chances with a Chevy 1/2 ton no matter how beautifully they drive.
The same CR reports that bashes the 1/2 tons, by the way, rates the reliability of Chevy’s HD trucks high. So much for the conspiracy theory.
And yet another. Dear Cdnsolman. Some of these failures occur Before the 1st oil change. Some immediately after leaving the dealer with 1 side replaced. In todays world many many buyers wouldn’t have a clue how to change their oil and thus rely on the dealer to do so. My wife would be the perfect example of this. But she does know that an oil change is by far the cheapest form of maintenance available. That and her Toyota dealer sends her reminders if they think she’s getting close to due for an Oil change.
That might be the case for a very select few, but the shop I work in sees quite a few trucks coming in with oil change stickers from quick lube or lubex or whatever. Those places do not have certified mechanics doing oil changes, and I’ve seen many of them had the wrong oil put into them
Not everyone takes their trucks back to the dealers for oil changes because it’s cheaper elsewhere.
I’m sorry if you have been one with a very quick failure, but I sincerely doubt that all 4% of the failed trucks happened driving off the lot.
I also can’t help but notice there is no mention of the SUV’s with the same powertrains having such a high failure rate. Do tahoe engines just think they are better than silverados?
I’d tend to agree about the Quick lube joints. No GM vehicles but our Focus ST has the 2.0L EcoBoost engine and requires 5w-30 Synthetic oil. Last year it needed an oil change before my son took it back to college. I took it to a large Quick Lube chain and specified 5w-30 Castrol Syntec. The filler cap also specifies 5w-30 in bright yellow. I watched the tech pull 6 quarts of 5w-20 from the bulk tank into his dispenser. I stopped him and told him he’d pulled the wrong oil. Nope, he said, Ford’s use 5w-20. Not the turbo’s I replied and pointed out the cap. He pulled a new container of 5w-30 but never would have done that if I hadn’t been standing there pointing it out. Last fall I took the Focus to the Ford dealer’s Quick Lane facility and again specified the 5w-30 Full Synthetic. The manager said no problem, had it in the bottles. I then watched the “technician” pour 6 quarts of Motorcraft 5w-20 Semi-Synthetic into the crankcase! I pointed it out to him and he stated they didn’t have any 5w-30. Told him to stop and went to the manager who checked and confirmed they didn’t have the correct oil. They had to get it from a parts store, drain the oil they just put in and refill the crankcase with the correct, specified oil. My experience is with two different facilities in two different states. The quality of service and products in these joints is wildly inconsistent and today’s engines are built to vastly tighter tolerances than an old small-block or Ford Windsor. The only way to guarantee you get what you pay for and what your vehicle requires is to do it yourself or stand there and watch what goes into the engine. It’s terribly disappointing the caliber of work that happens at these Quick Lube places.
2000 Chevy 4.8 liter 432000. Miles still going original plugs wires hoses, quit whining and slow down people
Congratulations. That was a great engine (I have one) but you’re in different world entirely Timothy. It doesn’t apply.
I’m with you, except I have the 5.3 in a 2001 Yukon. Same mileage. Original engine and tranny. Simpler engine and I’ve babied it over the years. Next to no towing. Additional cooling system.
So only GM owners use cheap oil or neglect/stretch the maintenance schedule or idle their trucks? Im sorry – we have a design/quality issue here. Failure of lifters etc in under 10K miles is not an oil quality or service interval issue.
Not at all, Ram is rouding camshaft issues and ford has cam phasor issues. All of which rely on the condition and quality of the oil.
This is what happens when a vehicle manufacturing company with a long history of cost cutting and bean counting puts most of their product development money into the EV basket. That, combined with the industry practice of awarding supplier contracts to the cheapest bidder.
I purchased a 2019 Sierra Denali 6.2 in July with 58k miles. It was serviced at GMC amd had all recommended services and oil changes. It has never towed anything (unless they replaced the hitch). 4k miles in 6 months later it started knocking. Total engine replacement required. My 9th GM truck in the last 30 years. Never before have I had anything like it. Fortunately I purchased the extended warranty and GM is extending my warranty for 3 years and 100k on the new one.
So it is true that they can offer more warranty with this kind of issues ha? We were informed that GM wouldn’t add more warranty? I guess I better check on this because if we have this kind of issues with the lifters we either need them to purchase back the vehicle (2021 GMC 1500 AT4 truck) or get more warranty?
My company was buying Ram’s
They started about 2016 buying Silverado 1500 with 5.3’s. Big mistake. I drove a 2017 Silverado for them.
Over $5000 chasing an oil leak. $3500 transmission. Another $2800 for a transfer case. The truck was junk. I can’t afford to own a GM truck. My personal truck is a 2017 Ram 2500. In 110,000 miles I have done routine maintenance and bought a set of tires
Rams much higher reliability per Consumer Reports.
Rams used to be junk! I had a Ram van that was a money pit but the company turned it around and now they make good cars.
I had a 2016 Chevy Silverado diesel, no problems at all, I had a 2020 GMC Sierra had the transmission shuddering, now I have a 2022 GMC sierra with less than 95 miles and it has transmission shuddering, engine issues(ticking), computer seems to be going crazy spitting out all kinds of codes
Once again..Another Barra Blunder….
You cannot develop/ engineer / evaluate a over the road vehicle from home.
Anyone thinking that this is possible has their head up there A$$.
Anyone purchasing one of these vehicles is just plain STUPID.
And , once again, you can’t teach STUPID.
NUFF…SAID……
The only engine that doesn’t seem to have issues is the 2.7.
That’s good news if it’s do – that’s a sophisticated engine. How do you know?
Anyone talking about them without knowing how it or they works is stupid. So maybe you should take a look in the mirror…
I have owned GM trucks all my life. I’m no troll or GM fanboy. I also know lots of people who own GM trucks. I’m not saying they are flawless. In my years owning them (and the others I know), they are just like any other manufacturer. The truck will give you back the service you give it. If you abuse it, it will abuse you. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. If you neglect it, it will neglect you. Doesn’t make a difference if it’s Ford, GM, Dodge, Toyota, Nissan… they only serve as good as they are served. My 2003 Silverado 2500HD 6.0L performed flawlessly for 15 years. I serviced it regular and treated If with respect. I use my trucks, I don’t abuse my trucks. In 15 years, it needed brakes, oil changes, gas, 1 new battery, cab corners, rocker panels and tires. That was 98,000 miles. I hauled gravel, firewood and towed trailers regularly. Would still be driving it today if I didn’t find a smoking deal on an almost identical 2019. I have know others with not so good an experience. That goes for ALL manufacturers, not just GM.
It”s a 6.0 with a good transmission behind it. Both known for their reliability. Different world!
Just let me order the new ZR2 silverado already 😎
Waiting in line with you. I sold my ’21 LT Trailboss w/6.2L for 5K more than I paid for it to buy a ’22 ZR2.
As to quality control. My good friends wife has a ’20 Tahoe with the 5.3L and it left her stranded on the road for the 2nd time. The first time GM was UNABLE to supply the correct parts to repair the issue. He is looking for another vehicle for her.
I have owned nothing but Chevy’s over the last 30 years but this is getting bad.
I have a 2020 Gmc slt with a 3.0 liter diesel and I love it gets 25 to 30 mpg consistently I can’t complain on it drives nice and is quiet everyone should get the small diesel you would love it
I shave 2021 Silverado with 3.0 diesel. I also get 25 to 30 mpg. I got a gas, diesel card from local oil company and its 25 cents cheaper than the local gas stations.
They’ve canceled the 3.0 diesel.
Huh?? You couldn’t be more incorrect. They are 100% still supplying this powertrain. I’ve got a ‘22 Yukon being built this week with it. The 3.0 had a pause for a couple weeks due to supplier issues for the parts of the motor but it was a very short pause and it is still being sold in very high quantities.
Bought a GMC 1500 Denali crew in December 2017. It’s got 145K kilometers on it and has been trouble free
Have done Alberta to Arizona twice and it gets 22 mpg on the freeway.
I have a silverado that was never vaxxed and it still runs great ! I don’t worry about it tho because it wears a deflector on the hood . Some people believe in them and some people don’t…all I know is my friends truck doesn’t wear one and has a cracked windshield. Ijs…
That ZR2 is going to own the mall drive thru, which is sadly where most will end up. Guys who will spout about the front locker and 33’s holding a Frappuccino watching their kids play soccer with a spotless undercarriage. A front locker is something only a handful people will ever actually need or use, but it is a macho conversation piece! Sad they put it in the box checker version which neutered the payload…
You can’t order it unless you slap a huge lift kit on it and giant rims. gm said only cool people can order the zr2
Then I must be cool.. since I have owned (3) ZR2’s, (2) Z71’s and a ZL1.
F’ the big rims.
From my 90 WT – trans issues at 40000 miles
My 95 WT – throwout bearing at 12000
My 97 WT – manifold gasket at 68000
My 05 WT – ran like a champ – rust at 80000
My 08 WT – manifold gasket at 70000
My 11 WT – cladding on frame bad – rust after a year
My 14 WT – rear end bad at 7000 mi
My 15 WT – radiator bad at 19000
My 18 WT – no low speed brakes – secondary pump couldn’t handle rain .
