Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Blazer sales posted a 14 percent decline to 19,986 units during the fourth quarter of 2021, placing it in the middle of the crowded mainstream midsize and full-size crossover segments comprised of 21 entries. However, the Blazer saw a less steep rate of change compared to its larger platform mate, the Chevy Traverse, which saw a 47 percent drop in sales volume to 22,052 units. The Chevy duo’s corporate platform mate, the GMC Acadia, came in dead last in the segment with an 80 percent decline in sales to just 4,234 units.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, now comprised of a two-row model (a Blazer rival) and a three-row model (a Traverse rival) took first place with a 31 percent increase in sales to 74,816 units. The Ford Explorer (see Ford Explorer sales) took second with a 10 percent decrease in sales to 59,697 units, followed by the Toyota Highlander in third with a 20 percent sales drop to 56,564 units. Ford’s direct rival to the Blazer, the Ford Edge (see Ford Edge sales), posted a 5 percent decrease in sales volume to 30,274 units while the Honda Pilot took fifth place with a 16 percent decrease in sales to 28,395 units.

The Grand Cherokee took a 15 percent segment share, up 5 percentage points. The Explorer maintained its 12 percent share, the Highlander saw its share drop 2 percentage points to 11 percent, and the Edge held its steady 6 percent share. The Pilot maintained its 6 percent share. The rest of the field had a 5 percent segment share or less. The Blazer maintained its 4 percent segment share in Q4 2021.  Like the Blazer, the Traverse held a 4 percent segment share, down 4 percentage points year-over-year. Meanwhile, the Acadia posted a mere 1 percent share, down 3 percentage points.

The mainstream midsize and full-size crossover segment, comprised of unibody utilities with a starting price in the vicinity of $30,000, contracted 9 percent to 495,806 units during Q4 2021, meaning Blazer sales underperformed the segment average.

Narrowing down the segment to only midsize crossovers with two rows of seating places the Blazer in third place out of six entries with a 20 percent segment share, down just 1 percentage point. The Edge took top honors with a 30 percent share, up 2 percentage points, followed by the Hyundai Santa Fe with a 22 percent share, down 5 percentage points.

As we noted above the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which we typically include in the midsize two-row segment, is now offered in both two- and three-row configurations. Unfortunately, Jeep parent, Stellantis, does not break out sales figures of both models, leading us to remove it from this comparison.

The mainstream mid-size, two-row CUV segment contracted 10 percent to 102,119 units during Q4 2021, meaning Blazer sales underperformed this segment average as well.

The GM Authority Take

Lackluster inventory of the Blazer continues to negatively impact sales. An ongoing drop in inventory, running at just 11 days supply in December 2021, suggests a considerable excess of demand over supply for the Chevy Blazer. This can often be explained by the ongoing global microchip shortage that is expected to persist well into 2022. The scenario has impacted vehicle production at auto plants around the world, including the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico where the Blazer is produced for the Americas. Blazer production at the facility was idle from August 23rd to September 6th before finally restarting on October 18th.

At GM, smaller vehicles like the Chevy Equinox and Blazer have been impacted the most by the microchip shortage. Since the automaker’s larger vehicles, like full-size trucks and SUVs, tend to be more profitable, the automaker continues to prioritize its chip supply for plants that build these vehicles.

Before the disruption caused by the microchip shortage, the Blazer was well on its way to establishing itself in the midsize crossover space, moving twice as many units a year ago when it took fourth place in its segment. If GM can make enough of the Chevy Blazer to meet pent-up demand, it’ll again profit handsomely from a new model that’s been a winner right out of the gate.

It’s also worth noting that GM will refresh the Blazer for the 2023 model year. The vehicle will get a revised front fascia, several enhancements to the rear end, plus some key updated to the interior. As GM Authority was first to report just last week, the refreshed Blazer will be revealed in February.

  1. Even with enough chips Chevrolet Blazer (& Traverse) cannot compete with new entrants like Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisades yet Ford and Jeep aren’t as weak. Even the soon dead Edge–dumb move, Ford,–is in a stronger position. GM got cute thinking Chevrolet (& GMC) could copy Jeep’s two row set up without bring any off road credentials or excitement to the mix!
Still, what do I know seeing as decade old Durango would be my first choice!

    1. Always a someone keep mentioning the Tellaride and Pileoshide eventhough it’s not in the same class as Blazer. No one other than AM radio listening billybobs want a “off-road” Blazer and the sales showed even pre-pandemic. Want a big Blazer?, get a Tahoe. Ask how come Ford can’t make a competitive Expedition against the GM SUVs?.

      1. I notice you did not mention Bronco, which is closer to this class than the Tahoe, and is kicking the Blazer’s butt in sales. Huge miss gm. A Colorado platform K5 Blazer would sell at high volumes like the Bronco and would not significantly impact the current Blazer sales as Ford has proved.

        1. Sure, wait 15 months for your Bronco to be delivered with $15k mark-ups. They can’t even get the Maverick to dealers and that supposed to be the base vehicle. My point stands, also ask why they killed their Blazer competitor Edge….

          1. Bronco has been a massive hit with over 160k converted orders for 2021 alone. Now they have the bronco raptor plus the Everglades edition coming. Not everyone is waiting 15 months either most aren’t now. I personally know someone who ordered 4 months ago who already has their eruption green 2 door bronco.

            1. Orders of what?, pizza?. Many people cancelled because of months waiting on a Bucko, the 2 mythical machines today are Bronco and PS5.

As for the R, yeah nice to see another overpriced, non-existent version to a barely existing “mass produced” vehicle, another example of their “wisdom” can you tell me when you last seen a current GT500 outside a roped-off showroom for (goodness forbid) MSRP?, I see more C8s then V8 Mustangs now. As said they gave up on the Edge, they don’t have a competition for Blazer and no-one outside a beach party cares about Bronco but Jeep will thank them for the cancelled orders…..

              1. No actual converted orders not reservations like gm has right now I’m talking actual orders that have been converted. The number is now above 160k you don’t have to take my word for it look it up. The preorder number for the deposit was above 250k the actual converted orders are above 160k and that number grows daily. You don’t have to like it but ford has 3 major winners with the bronco, the bronco sport, and the maverick.

                1. “Through July, about 3200 Broncos have been sold, Ford communications chief Said Deep told Car and Driver. To date, Ford has received more than 125,000 orders for the Bronco, which debuted as a 2021 model, with 190,000 people having put down $100 refundable deposits. The reservation system will be back in October.”

Don’t sound like wheels on the road…

The original point is Blazer don’t need be an off-roader to compete as a CUV.

                  1. Of course they aren’t on the road yet. My mistake if my wording sounded like that. No I know the bronco release has been a disaster I’m one of the people who canceled my order not because I didn’t like it but the whole well I’d you ordered this this and this it will take longer made me say I’ll just wait. Plus a lot of people told me to never buy a first year model of any vehicle from anyone.
