Cadillac XT5 Sales Slip To 3 Percent Segment Share During Q4 2021

Cadillac XT5 sales decreased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico during the fourth quarter of 2021.

Cadillac XT5 Sales - Q4 2021 - United States

In the United States, Cadillac XT5 deliveries totaled 3,528 units in Q4 2021, a decrease of about 68 percent compared to 10,950 units sold in Q4 2020.

During the complete 2021 calendar year, XT5 sales decreased about 19 percent to 28,380 units.

Cadillac XT5 Sales - Q4 2021 - Canada

In Canada, Cadillac XT5 deliveries totaled 588 units in Q4 2021, a decrease of about 52 percent compared to 1,220 units sold in Q4 2020.

During the complete 2021 calendar year, XT5 sales increased about 3 percent to 4,341 units.

Cadillac XT5 Sales - Q4 2021 - Mexico

In Mexico, Cadillac XT5 deliveries totaled 15 units in Q4 2021, a decrease of about 76 percent compared to 63 units sold in Q4 2020.

During the complete 2021 calendar year, XT5 sales decreased about 22 percent to 131 units.

In Russia, Cadillac XT5 deliveries totaled 24 units in Q4 2021.

During the complete 2021 calendar year, XT5 sales were flat at 0 units.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac XT5 sales experienced a 68 percent drop to 3,528 units, placing the crossover in 10th place out of a dozen entries in the D-segment luxury crossovers segment.

The Lexus RX led the pack in first place with 30,695 deliveries (down 12 percent), followed by the BMW X3 in second with 21,865 deliveries (down 7 percent). It was followed by the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (GLC-Class and GLC-Class Coupe) with 13,674 units (down 27 percent). The Acura MDX placed fourth with 12,243 units (down 20 percent), while the Audi Q5 placed fifth with 10,381 units (down 51 percent). The Volvo XC60 followed in sixth to 9,999 units (down 14 percent) and the Lincoln Nautilus took seventh with 6,267 deliveries (down only 6 percent). The new Genesis GV70 took eighth with 5,461 deliveries, followed by BMW’s other entry, the X4, at 3,749 units (up 30 percent). The XT5 only outsold two models – the Infiniti QX50 and Alfa Romeo Stelvio, with 2,536 and 2,204 deliveries, respectively.

From a segment share standpoint, the RX held a quarter of the segment with a 24 percent share (up 2 percentage points). The X3 followed with an 18 percent share (also up 2 percentage points), while the GLC-Class posted an 11 percent segment share (down 1 percentage point). The MDX stayed flat at 10 percent share, while the Q5 took 8 percent (down 6 percentage points). The XC60 stayed flat at 8 percent, followed by the Nautilus with 5 percent (up 1 percentage point). The GV70 took 4 percent, while the X4 took 3 percent (up 1 percentage point). The XT5 held a 3 percent segment share (down 4 percentage points). The Stelvio and QX50 each held 2 percent share each.

The luxury D-crossover segment contracted nearly 19 percent to 122,602 units in Q4 2021, meaning that XT5 sales fared worse than segment average. Only three models in the segment posted an increase in sales – Genesis GV70, BMW X4 and Infiniti QX50.

We should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX and the three-row RX L, with the two-row model competing against the XT5 while the three-row RX L being a rival to the new Cadillac XT6. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit XT5 and XT6 sales against those of the RX.

Doing so gives Cadillac 6,468 sales, still far behind the 24,227 units recorded by the Lexus RX family.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT5 sales fell substantially faster than the segment average during the fourth quarter of 2021 thanks to production being down through December 6th of 2021. That continues to negatively impact availability of the luxury crossover at the retail level, preventing customers from purchasing the model.

With production of the XT5 now back in full swing, we expect sales to regain ground over the coming months as inventory supply constraints dissipate. We should also note that GM is planned to revise the Cadillac XT5 for the 2023 model year, updating the product to make it more competitive than the current offering.

  2. Caddies XT5 is old school. 3.6Lv6 gas gussler. no hybrid like Lexus ,either update it or be last in sales

    1. I have a 2018 XT5 and I love it. It has the 8-speed VVT transmission which is silky smooth. And the 3.6L motor rated at 310 hp has plenty of power for my needs. Our 2 dogs fit okay in the back without having to put the 2nd row seats down. It has great features and options. Mind you, when I bought it I did not compare it to the other manufacturers vehicles in this segment. I’m a red blooded GM guy, and this little crossover is a nice complement to my 2009 CTS-V.

  3. I’d like to see what the new 2023 XT5 will look like. I bet it looks alot like the 2023 Lyriq. Does anyone know when we’ll see the new XT5?
