Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Buick Encore GX sales experienced a 41 percent drop to 10,068 units during the fourth quarter of 2021, placing the crossover in ninth place out of 21 entries in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment.
The Encore GX was outsold by the Honda HR-V in first with a 43 percent jump in sales, moving a segment-high 31,692 units – nearly 13K units over the next entry. That would be the Hyundai Kona in second, which posted an 18 percent drop in sales to 19,141 units. The Nissan Kicks was in third, posting the biggest sales increase among the group at a whopping 237 percent to 18,225 units. Next was the Jeep Compass in fourth with a 42 percent decrease in sales to 17,613 units.
The Encore GX’s corporate cousin and VSS-F platform mate, the Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevrolet Trailblazer sales), took fifth place with a modest 6 percent decrease in sales to 16,263 units, outselling the Encore GX by 6,195 units. The Kia Soul placed sixth with an 11 percent increase to 14,781 units. The Volkswagen Taos – a new entry in the segment which launched last summer – placed seventh with 13,639 sales and the Mazda CX-30 took eighth with a 24 increase to 12,711 units. The Encore GX followed in ninth, outselling such key rivals as the Kia Seltos and Niro, Jeep Renegade, and Toyota CH-R.
Note that Buick fields two entries in this segment, the Encore GX and Encore. The two crossovers are mechanically not related despite carrying the same base name. In fact, the Buick Encore GX slots between the “regular” Buick Encore and Buick Envision in the brand’s vehicle lineup.

From a segment share standpoint, the Encore GX lost 2 percentage points for a 5 percent share. By comparison, the segment-leading HR-V held a 16 percent segment share, up a healthy 7 percentage points. It was followed by the Kona, which posted a 1 percent gain to 9 percent segment share. The Compass held the same 9 percent segment share, but lost 3 percentage points. The Trailblazer gained a percentage point for an 8 percent segment share.
It’s also worth noting that the Buick Encore was outsold by its platform mate, the Chevy Trailblazer, by 9,031 units. In addition, the Encore GX outsold the “regular” Encore by 9,263 units, which only moved 805 units. This is explained by GM continuing to allocate more production capacity to the Encore GX over the regular Encore.

As such, GM outsold FCA/Stellantis by 5,426 units, marking the tenth time that The General sold more units than FCA/Stellantis in this segment since the introduction of the second-generation Jeep Compass. The Compass made significant gains in the sales charts at its launch, but has since lost sales volume and segment share. During Q4 2021, GM held a combined 14 percent segment, 2 percentage points higher than Stellantis.

That said, the Kia Soul could be considered part of the smaller A-segment. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai and Kia sales totals leaves the Korean duo with 39,127 units, still 10,707 units more than GM.
The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted nearly 20 percent to 198,574 units during Q4 2021.
The GM Authority Take
Encore GX sales had an unhealthy drop in sales and lost segment share during Q4 2021. Its corporate cousin and platform mate, the Chevy Trailblazer, fared better with a modest decrease in sales that enabled it to gain a percentage point in segment share. The duo compete in a very contested and crowded field – one that added yet another model in the form of the VW Taos.
Nevertheless, the drop in Encore GX sales during Q4 2021 was the result of sub-optimal inventory caused by ongoing supply chain issues, headlined by the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage are expected to remain throughout the first half of 2022.
Going forward, we expect Buick Encore GX sales to improve as GM allocates more of the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea to produce the model at the expense of the “regular” Encore, which is also produced at the same facility.

An American brand assembled in CHINA ((( NO WAY ))
I believe the source for all Encore GX models sold in the US is GM Korea.
Motor was designed primarily by SAIC-GM in Shanghai and built in Mexico. The Korean assembly is the least exploitative labor used in this subpar vehicle.
The higher end trim needs the new 2.0. And don’t get me wrong, I’ve driven the 1.3T in an AWD model and it has some get up go, and I like the way it sounds, but it left me wanting more in that price range. I ended up splurging on a 21 Envision and am happy, but it has more than I need.
There also needs to be more differentiation between it and the Trail Blazer, outside a heads up display and better materials/quiet tuning, it’s not much different. And cerdinally not for the price when you can get a nearly identical trailblazer. I’ve saw people trying to install the heads up display through eBay purchases of the china trailblazer heads up display and dash as well.
I ordered a 2022 Buick Encore GX FWD on June 10, 2021. It has not been delivered to my local GM dealership. Why???
