The upcoming 2023 Cadillac Lyriq EV is poised to arrive as the luxury marque’s very-first all-electric vehicle, offering the comfort and elegance expected, plus a high-tech Ultium-based powertrain for motivation. Now, we’re getting another early look at the new Lyriq thanks to the following photos.
Seen in prototype form testing on public roads, this particular example of the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq is equipped with 20-inch Split 6-Spoke alloy wheels with a Diamond Cut/Dark Android finish and Gloss Black aero inserts, wrapped in 265/50R20 all-season tires.
Up top is a fixed glass roof, which will be standard equipment on the Lyriq Debut Edition model. The Lyriq Debut Edition will be the first trim level on offer, and is set for production this spring. To note, reservations for the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq Debut Edition filled in a mere 10 minutes after opening.
Outside, this 2023 Cadillac Lyriq prototype is covered in Crystal White Tricoat paint (paint code G1W), a hue offered across the Cadillac lineup. It’s also worth mentioning that Crystal White Tricoat paint is not one of the two colors offered fo the Lyriq Debut Edition, although GM has said there will be more colors coming afterwards.
In the fender, we see that the Lyriq’s charge port door taped shut, something which we’ve seen on other Cadillac Lyriq prototypes in the past. This particular prototype also has a mismatched liftgate, which is either unpainted or painted black. Like the taped charge port, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Lyriq prototype with a mismatched liftgate.
The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq is set to roll off the line at the GM Spring Hill Assembly plant in just a few month’s time. The well-equipped 2023 Cadillac Lyriq Debut Edition will launch with a 12-module, 100.4 kWh Ultium battery pack, juicing a single rear-mounted Ultium Drive electric motor to produce an estimated 340 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. A full charge will provide roughly 300 miles of driving range.

I guess it’s looking better lol.
So far I think it looks pretty good, at least in photos. I’ll wait until I see it in person. 3D is different than 2D. But Tesla has set the bar so low with the log in the loo looks, anything is an improvement.
I’ve seen the Lyriq so much now especially during their advertising campaign the first half of 2021 that it’s already starting to look old. GM should seriously consider not advertising a car 2 years before one can actually buy at a dealer. From Cadillac employees in the know I found out that there were only 1500 Debut edition Lyriqs available to reserve. Now I’m hearing rumors that there were actually only one or two hundred and that those owners, once they finally get their Lyriq, possibly this summer, will have to participate in reviewing the car in order to improve and fix bugs before the full production run starting in early 2023. FYI – The Debut Edition Lyriq will be considered a 2023 model.
I managed to get a reservation and have already ordered my Lyriqs in the color of my choice. I hardly doubt that there were only 100 or 200 cars available. And I was able to get a reservation. I entered my reservation and left my deposit at 4:09 pm that Saturday. I did it on my cell phone while at a party. No high speed internet. 1500 cars for reservations seems more likely.
Vince, you’re lucky. I started filling out the on-line reservation form immediately when it opened, and it was 2 minutes after that when I pressed the reserve button and there was a warning not to press it again and not to refresh the screen until you get the confirmation screen. All I got was a continues revolving circle. After 10 minutes I refreshed the screen and the screen said reservations were full. As you can see, I was absolutely furious after waiting almost 6 months to reserve it! So, about a month later, after getting nowhere with Cadillac and Cadillac Dealers (no reservation found), I ordered a Mustang Mach-E premium extended range (304 miles). It will supposedly be ready in May and I saved $8,000 compared to the Lyriq Debut Edition price. The only thing the Mach-E does not have that the Lyriq does are messaging seats.
Oh no what will you do now without massaging seats in your car? That would be a deal breaker for me I can’t imagine having a vehicle without massaging seats.
Jeff, I had EXACTLY the same experience as you! Felt the same and also the same deal with Cadillac and the local dealer, although I will say the dealer was very sympathetic but there was nothing he could do. I’m convinced that Cadillac wanted the first editions to go to specific EV friendly states (Likely CA, TX, FL and the like). It would be very easy for them to selectively sort out which locations were going to be processed. I’m in CO and RWD is not likely to be a best seller here with our winters. Curious what state you were ordering from.
Dear Phil,
Thank you. Now I know I’m not alone. You make an excellent theory as to the possibility that the Debut Edition Lyriq was targeted to EV friendly states. Yes, we had to select a dealer in Las Vegas, so they knew where we were at. I’m in Nevada and it took over a year before we started to get Bolts at dealers in Las Vegas. Bolts did not start showing up in Las Vegas until the summer of 2018, 1-1/2 years after it was released in December 2016. We got tired of waiting for our ordered Bolt (ordered in October 2016) and saw one for $5,000 off at an L.A. area dealer and drive their and bought it in September 2017.
Jeff,
According to an article in the Detroit Free Press 2/1 Mary Barra is quoted…”GM has 59,000 reservations for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup and customer interest in the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq SUV is “so strong we’re going to forego a second round of reservations and start taking orders in March,” Barra said.”
Would love to order in March but don’t see how that’s rational until we see what happens to Biden’s BBB plan and a $12,000 incentive on a GM EV. Probably a lot of folks would feel that way.
Dear Phil, Thanks for that update! I missed that article. That is great news. I too am looking forward to reserving a Lyriq in March. I wish they would announce a date and time for the start of this second round of reservations. Do you know if Mary Barra has announced a date and time yet?
My understanding from her comment is they are going to skip the second round of reservations altogether and just open it up for your dealer to order for you in March. No date given. Might want to check with your dealer.
Dear Phil,
Oh, yes. I see that now.
Thanks,
Jeff
Dear Phil, I just confirmed your article reference in the Detroit Free Press, and you are absolutely right, Mary Barra said that Cadillac will start taking ORDERS for the Lyriq in March of this year, not reservations. That is fantastic news. I hope the orders will be delivered before the end of this year.
For anyone interested the article is titled “GM reports $14.3 billion in 2021 earnings despite COVID-19, chip shortage”
by Jamie L. LaReau
Detroit Free Press
Jeff hablas mucho y sin tener NINGUNA confirmación. Seguramente una planta para 200 unidades para una planta de ensamblaje. Que sea modelo 2023 no significa que sale en el 2023. Mejor dicho no asegures cosas que no conoces.
Dear Oscar, I assure you that I talked to several GM employees that worked the day reservations opened, and they said that they were told the inside information that only 1500 Debut Edition Lyriqs were available to reserve, and they were getting a lot of calls from upset people. That was confirmed by the Cadillac dealers I talked to. I did not record the conversations. Also, I do not lie, I’m only reporting what I heard from GM employees.
Now the rumors I heard about there actually being less than 1500 Debut Editions are just that, rumors, as I stated.
I have a question for those that were able to reserve a Debut Edition Lyriq. Have you actually gone through the ordering process yet? If not, when were you told that you could actually order it? If you have ordered it, when were you told you would actually get it?
I was able to reserve my
Lyric within the first 5 minutes. However, the web-site locked up and I was $#@% off. I made several calls to both GM HQ and to the local dealer. They said sorry and they did not have a solution. That prompted a visit to my selected dealer to see if they could do anything. Nothing.
So I was a little upset but oh well you know what happens.
But about 2 or 3 days later I received an email with a registration number. Happy again.
So to answer your question: I have received a call from the dealer so that I could select colors and tire size. That was it. I have called my rep to check on progress but they did not get any info either.
So we all wait.
Rick in McAllen Texas
Dear Oscar, Here is proof for you that I am not making up that there were only 1,500 Debut Edition Lyriqs available. Since I can put links in this message try searching for the article titled “2023 Cadillac Lyriq Debut Edition Sold Out In Just Over Ten Minutes: The carmaker did not say how many vehicles were reserved, though one dealer’s website lists the launch edition as having 1,500 units.” by Dan Mihalascu dated September 20, 2021 on insideevs dot com.
That taped charge port can mean several things. One may be that it is touch sensitive and the tape prevents curious hands from opening it. Or that the electric door is not working as it should before final production. I prefer a manual operating door that is unlocked by the fob a phone app, or by a button from inside.
2 weeks ago Someone here wrote we would see Celestiq in the beginning of february.
Is it real info or not?
I mean… the super bowl is coming..
Is it your guess or you now 100 percent?
Who cares. It’s two crap teams I guarantee you viewership will be down this year compared to last.
While this “Caddy” looks to be a nicely engineered EV SUV, I’ll just bet that when it finally arrives at Cadillac Dealers nation wide, you had better have a decent amount in your checking account because this ain’t going to be a “reasonably priced” GM vehicle, no sireeeee! Once again, the dealers are going to “bang the public” for all they can from this Caddy because all of the other Caddy’s (what there is of them) are not that popular, it’s too bad as most of them are fairly decent products.
Big problem with any Cadillac nowadays is that you can buy an “upscale marque” (Mercedes Benz, BMW, Jaguar, Porsche ect) for either the same price or a little bit more, and who isn’t for owning an “upscale” vehicle for the same price as a “mid scale” vehicle…and yes, the Caddy’s you see today are, at best “upper midscale” and not totally able to compete with the top foreign makes, the sales figures and automotive magazines will prove these facts to be true.
So while I give GM kudo’s for producing an EV Cadillac SUV, you can be sure that, at best, it’ll prove to be way too expensive, only “mid pack” in overall performance & interior levels of quality, it’s the way GM rolls…promise a whole lot of advanced engineering and then, deliver only the equivalent of “mid pack” engineering. Too bad, I hope I’m wrong but with GM losing market share and it’s World Wide Status as one of the worlds largest automotive producer (now given to Toyota and Volkswagen) I’ll have to wait and see just what GM has produced here and how it’s rated by all the “auto experts” before I lay down what will certainly be a huge chunk of change for this particular “Standard of The World” EV.
word is that AWD is a year after launch. What are they thinking? Oh, and the “sold out” launch edition is supposedly less than 200 units. Come on guys, get real.
You complain if they rush things out and they fail and then you complain they are doing a slow start on a totally new kind of platform…..how can they win?
The truth is the BEV is a reset for everyone and most companies will be judged by how their products perform and how well they deal with issues when they came.
You fail on this you could doom any new models to come before they are even out.
This is not like dropping a new ICE v8.
People have every right to complain considering any US tax payer is the only reason this company is here. If I had some big company and I claimed I needed a bailout but you didn’t wanna give it to me so I took it anyways would you not be very critical of everything I did?
Nice plastic grill it definitely makes the car look expensive.
It would be nice to know when AWD model will be available, how much it will add to the price and what it will do to the range estimate. Those of us who like to be pioneers and need AWD shouldn’t be made to wait until it’s yesterday’s news.
Why buy a GM anything at their prices when you can BMW or better for near the same money, it’s a no brainer. GM’s notoriously bad quality and resale will doom this car.
So buy the bmw and go to the bmw forum. Sheesh.
People can say what they want mkavt you are not the website dictator. If he wants to talk about bmw on here then he can you don’t like it make your own website then.
Yeah, because they iX is a real looker!
I have two BMW’s – a seven series, and an M X6 – while great driving cars – the worst in reliability, and expense through the roof. Never again. I would be willing to bet, that Cadillac is better.
I really like the low/long proportions.

I’ve known a few guys who thought they were pretty smart
But you’ve got being right down to an art
You think you’re a genius
You drive me up the wall
You’re a regular original know-it-all
Oh-oo-oh, you think you’re special
Oh-oo-oh, you think you’re something else
Okay, so you’re a rocket scientist

Ever since I saw an early Cadillac promotional video touting the lines-enhancing absence of a rear wiper on that heavily slanted rear window because “of all the work they’ve done to have water continuously removed by airflow when driving”, I became entirely skeptical about ALL of the engineering in this vehicle.
Ever been sitting at a stop light or stop-&-go traffic in a rain storm? How about those of us in snow country? I can’t fathom how the rear view remains clear under all conditions without a wiper (and washer). Are any of the cameras set up to view from the rear window area too? Doubly aggravating! Maybe that’s why the “substitute” liftgate? They’re still trying to figure out this obvious oversight?
According to the Lyriq’s webpage on the Cadillac website a ‘Rear Camera Mirror with Washer’ is listed in the ‘MORE STANDARD SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE FEATURES’ section.
That “washer” sounds better than nothing, but what would a simple spray (without wiping action) do for this problem I encountered recently? I was parked outside at a hotel in the Dallas area in a rental SUV during pine pollen and “mud rain” season last month. It had rained lightly overnight with very dirty water from dust storms in west Texas leaving the entire vehicle looking like it had been off-roading for a week, and the pine pollen (thick, sticky yellow) was covering the dried muddy water below it. There is no way a simple spray “wash” would have done anything meaningful to that mess. The vehicle’s rear and front wipers with several spray “washes” did clear enough to see out of the front and back windows, but I still had to wait at the LONG line at the car wash along with seemingly everyone else in Dallas who had parked outdoors that night to clear the SUV’s windows entirely. Without a rear wiper, it would have been dangerous to drive in crazy Dallas traffic that morning. Ironically there was an expensive Acura NSX (with no rear wiper and a huge, highly sloped, rear window) that was totally obscured with that junk (much worse than my rental with a more vertical rear window). When I saw that $150K+ vehicle’s predicament, I immediately thought that’s what I’d envision happening to a Lyriq in that same situation.
I have a question for those that were able to reserve a Debut Edition Lyriq. Have you actually gone through the ordering process yet? If not, when were you told that you could actually order it? If you have ordered it, when were you told you would actually get it?
About eight weeks ago, my dealer contacted me and sent over a PDF form from Cadillac that allowed me to pick my color and wheel options. It had signature boxes for me and the dealer. The form also stated that it was between me and the dealer to work out the final price. There was also a hard date (12/17) that it had to be completed. My dealer hasn’t mentioned anything about me paying anything other than MSRP. I have a dealer-signed copy of the document that went to Cadillac. I have not received a delivery date. The title of the email from Cadillac was ‘Don’t forget to order your 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ Debut Edition’. So, I guess the answer is yes.
Dear e.Blue, Thanks for sharing that information. I’m glad you completed the ordering process. GM is still on schedule to start production of it this Spring. I’m glad you were able to reserve one. I wish I was able to, which I missed due to some problem with their website, which they acknowledged. I still love the interior, which still has not gotten old on me.
I got a reservation for a debut edition and have ordered the options (exterior and interior color, wheels – no other choices). I was told the silver color would be produced first and I may get it in April. If Congress gives additional incentives for EV purchases I hope they do it before mine is ready for delivery. $12,000 is worth waiting for.
As soon as the reservation portal opened I entered my information, choose dealer and submitted reservation. I was probably no more that 4 minutes into the reservation process but even after the submission the reservation never returned a confirmation. All that was visible was the spinning marker. After about 20 mins I decided to hit the return key and it showed the reservations were exhausted. I left a message for my dealer and they contacted me two days later with the reservation confirmation code. It was also a couple of day latter that Cadillac acknowledged the reservation via email.
I had the same experience as e.Blue. My dealer in SoCal contacted me in early December to come in and sign the order form. Only options available were exterior and interior colors and wheel size. Price was agreed in writing between the dealer and myself at MSRP. Since signing and submitting order there have been no updates as to production or delivery date. So I wait patiently.
My understanding is that you will have a digital rear view mirror. The rear facing camera will have a dedicated washer. Is that enough to provide a clear rear view ? Perhaps or perhaps not. Until the actual at makes it into folks hands the question will remain. In my opinion it should be enough.
