2022 Chevy Traverse Among Best SUVs Under $40,000, Says Consumer Reports

The 2022 Chevy Traverse is among the best new crossovers available for under $40,000, according to the automotive expert panel over at Consumer Reports.

CR used both scores from its own road test reviews and owner survey data to determine the best new utility vehicles to buy for under $40,000. The 2022 Chevy Traverse received a strong road test score from CR editors of 95 out of 100, which was driven by a perfect braking performance score of 5 out of 5 and strong 4 out of 5 scores for its acceleration, transmission, front and rear seat comfort, ride quality, cabin noise, interior fit and finish and cargo space.

The Traverse showed room for improvement with regard to fuel economy and tailpipe emissions, however, as it only offers a naturally aspirated 3.6L LGX V6 engine. It received scores of 2 out of 5 for fuel economy and 4 out of 10 for greenhouse gas emissions.

Owners also reported positive experiences with previous model years of the Chevy Traverse. Owners gave the Chevy Traverse a score of 81 out of possible 100 for the drive experience and an even better score of 84 out of 100 for overall comfort. The Traverse showed room for improvement with regard to value, though, with owners only giving it a score of 54 out of 100 in this category.

The Traverse was docked points by CR for its simple two-way lumbar support adjustment on the front seats and manual sunshade for the optional sunroof. Chevy also only offers advanced active safety features on the pricy top trim levels, which netted it further criticism.

The 2022 Chevy Blazer is one of three GM crossovers that appeared on this list. As GM Authority reported earlier this week, the 2022 Buick Envision was also determined to be one of the best new crossovers for sale under $40k by CR, along with the 2022 Chevy Blazer.

  1. How does the $5000 up price effect the under $40,000? Does the under $40,000 for the three SUV’s include the up price?

  2. I have a 2017 Traverse, and It has been a very good vehicle for the 7 of us. The vehicle is large and very useful for carrying it all, which means the fuel consumption is high. I definitely would buy another Traverse if it was all electric – the ‘way of the future’. Let’s go GM – all wheel drive, solid state batteries, 800 Km range, lighter using new materials.

  3. We all knew that anyway. CR just confirmed that.

  4. Will a 2022 or 2023 GMC Terrain, Denali Trim, ever be produced? My dealer says not likely in 2022 but should be in 2023. I am asking because if not, I will be purchasing an extended warranty.

  6. This was one of choices when I was looking, but e-awd and hybrid powertrain , I choose sienna and it’s giving compact car fuel efficiency + AWD works very good without a axle taking space.

GM is a looser of games GM invents. If traverse was having VOLTEC and E-AWD I would have brought one.

  7. The 3.6 L V6 is a great engine but the best one is the V sport engine with twin turbos. GM ought a four-wheel drive version with a 400 plus HP with high torque at low RPM in all four of the SUVs. Chevrolet Buick GMC and Cadillac. If they are worried about sales figures they could limit the number and I’m sure they would sell very quickly.

  8. I dont know why you’re even advertising these.
You cant get one and the Traverse build lines are not even running at the factory.

  9. I find it absolutely amazing that CR. Doesn’t even mention the transmission problems with the 9 speed and all the other problems Gm has refused to address while they issue tech bulletins to get past the warranty. Ie. 300000 traverses from 2018-2019 having exhaust weld defect and dealer wants 2100 to replace two pipes. Had them patch welded for 200 at custom exhaust shop
I’m done with American cars. And that’s from a gm guy.
