These GMC Models Get Limited Park Assist Availability

As a result of the ongoing global microchip shortage, certain GMC vehicles will no longer be equipped with the Rear Park Assist feature or Front and Rear Park Assist feature. The change in availability first went into effect with GMC models produced on or after Monday, December 20th. It is currently uncertain if affected GMC vehicles will be eligible for retrofit of the Rear Park Assist feature or Front and Rear Park Assist feature in the future.

The GMC models affected by the reduced availability of the Front and Rear Park Assist feature include the GMC Acadia, GMC Sierra 1500 Limited, and GMC Sierra HD. Meanwhile, the GMC Canyon has been affected by the reduced availability of the Rear Park Assist feature.

Critically, only some units of the affected nameplates will no longer be equipped with the park assist features detailed above, with the exception of the GMC Canyon Elevation Standard, all units of which are no longer equipped with Rear Park Assist.

Check out the full list of GMC nameplates and trim levels affected by the reduced availability of these two park assist features in the table below:

As GM Authority covered previously, General Motors previously reduced the availability of heated seats, ventilated seats, and heated steering wheels for certain models, including several GMC vehicles. Like the reduced availability of the parking features listed above, the reduced availability of heated seats, ventilated seats, and heated steering wheels reduces the number of microchips used per vehicle produced.

More recently, General Motors announced that vehicles affected by the reduced availability of heated seats, ventilated seats, and heated steering wheels would be eligible to have those features retrofitted in the future at no cost to the customer. For the moment, it’s unclear if GMC vehicles affected by the reduced availability of the Rear Park Assist feature or Front and Rear Park Assist feature will be eligible for retrofitting as well.

GMC isn’t the only brand affected by this feature availability reduction. Check out GM Authority’s coverage of Chevy models affected by this change, and stay tuned for further coverage coming down the pipeline soon.

  1. Unlike the loss of heated seats and steering wheel, the deletion of front and rear parking assist will definitely be a game changer to those still waiting on their orders to be filled. Unlike the heated options being removed, the front and rear parking assist features are a “safety feature” that no new vehicle should be without. I’m sure there were other less needed features that could’ve been removed temporarily and retrofitted later, but I haven’t heard any other manufacturers removing such an important item off their vehicles. GM really needs to rethink their strategies on how to save microchips especially when at the same time they’re adding such features as “super cruise” to models like the Cadillac XT6 while removing their automatic parking assist features. Makes zero sense to me!

    1. The Equinox hasn’t had front park sensors in a long time and I am sorry but a backup camera is way better for the rear. These trucks aren’t getting made without a backup camera.

      1. … and when the backup camera gets wet or dirty,…. You’re pretty much backing up BLIND !
Sensors still work under these conditions, but cameras become useless.

  2. What’s wrong with using your eyes to look when your backing or parking? Personally I like the cameras to assist me better than a beep.
