’Tis the season for icy conditions and winter delays, and that means folks are once again breaking out the snow chains. Over the past few weeks, GM Authority has received messages from readers asking about the compatibility of snow chains with various wheel-and-tire combinations on the Chevy Silverado, and now, we’re taking a closer look at which tires are compatible.
With a wide variety of wheel-and-tire combinations on offer for the Chevy Silverado, it’s important to know which combos are compatible with snow chains when the roads are covered in the white stuff. As such, we’re breaking down all the tires on offer for not only the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited, but the 2022 Chevy Silverado HD as well.
For those readers who may not live in a snowy area, snow chains wrap around a tire and help to prevent wheel spin in icy and snowy conditions by digging into the frozen surface. Although snow chains can’t be driven over 30 mph, they do allow vehicles to traverse roads that would otherwise be un-passable without snow chains.
With all that covered, check out the table below for a complete breakdown of snow chain compatibility for the Chevy Silverado below:

Good compliment of tires! Most aggressive off road tires are also “snow rated” the duratracs are some of the best off road tires for the snow without being a designated snow tire. Still,,, not as good as chains, better than being stranded.
so why can you install them on some and not others? whats the difference?
Tire size. If the tire is too big, there’s not enough clearance in the wheel well. This is most critical on the front, when the tires are turning. Tire chains can cause serious body damage without sufficient clearance.
As a “general” rule, it appears above an 18″ wheel/tire size chains are a no-no. I would start by assuming there’s not enough clearance between the OD of the tire and the wheel well/fenders to physically allow the use of tire chains. But are we talking about actual old fashion tire chains or cable chains or ?
Not to even consider suspension travel on some vehicles.
Unless I’m missing something none of the trucks listed are designated as 2 or 4 WD . A critical component when chaining any vehicle.
The only ‘chains’ I’d ever used on my GMC/Chevrolet 4WD pickups were Z Chains. This was long before wheels and tires became the elaborate pieces which they are now.
Z Chains saved the day during a pop-up blizzard back in March of 1999 when I had to install them on my ’97 Z28. Got me out of a real jam. One just had to make sure that the Z Chains were properly installed and tensioned. As with any chain setup one had to limit driving on dry pavement.
