A pre-production version of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 in the XLT trim level and equipped with the available X31 off-road package was spotted by GM Authority photographers this week.
The X31 off-road package will return to the GMC Sierra nameplate for the refreshed 2022 model year and will be optional on the Sierra Pro, SLE, Elevation and SLT trim levels. It requires 4WD and either the Double Cab or Crew Cab body style, meaning it is not available on Sierra Pro Regular Cab.
As some readers may already know, the X31 package is the GMC equivalent of the Z71 off-road package available on the Chevy Silverado 1500 and includes similar equipment. Here’s what the X31 off-road package will include when applied to the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500:
- Off-Road suspension
- Hill Descent Control (RPO code JHD)
- Skid plates (RPO NZZ)
- Heavy-duty air filter (RPO K47)
- X31 hard badge
- Auto-locking rear differential (Sierra Pro only) (RPO G80)
- 2-speed transfer case (Sierra Pro, SLE, SLT only) (RPO NQH)
- Rear wheelhouse liners (SLE, Elevation only) (RPO B1J)
- 18″ 6-spoke machined aluminum wheels with Dark Grey Metallic accents (SLE only) (RPO UHN)
- 265/65R18SL all-terrain, blackwall tires (SLE, SLT only) (RPO XCK)
- 275/60R20SL all-terrain, blackwall tires (Elevation only) (RPO QAE)
- 2-speed Auto-Trac transfer case (SLE, Elevation only) (RPO NQH)
- Dual exhaust (SLE, Elevation, SLT only) (RPO N10)
This pre-production 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT is easily identifiable as an X31-equipped truck thanks to the red and silver ‘X31’ badge on the rear bed section, along with its slightly raised suspension, 18-inch 6-spoke wheels and all-terrain tires. Other key equipment is out of sight, such as the underbody skidplates and two-speed transfer case.
As noted above, the X31 package will be available with the Sierra Pro, SLE, Elevation and SLT trim levels. This means it will be available with all four of the Sierra’s engines (trim level dependent), which include the turbocharged 2.7L L3B I-4, naturally aspirated 5.3L L84 V8, 3.0L LM2 I-6 turbodiesel Duramax and naturally aspirated 6.2L L87 V8.
The refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will hit dealers in the first quarter of the 2022 calendar year. Pricing for the entry-level Pro trim starts at $32,495 including destination, while the range-topping Denali Ultimate is priced from $80,395. It’s currently not clear how much the X31 package will cost.

That looks really good.
Ok, I guess it looks a little better than I thought it would. I like it!
Looks more like an SLE?
I was going to say the same thing when I looked at the title, you would think that the Sierra Pro would be upgraded with the SLE Grill and not the SLT downgrading its Front-End look with the X31 option, I looked at the next photo for the badging on the tailgate and it certainly displays SLT??????
I agree. It says SLT but on GMC site the grill definitely goes on the SLE. Will be interesting to see what the actual grill design turns out to be.
Sure this is an SLT? If so, shouldn’t it have the multi-pro tailgate? If it has the X31 package, where are the dual exhausts?
Something isn’t quite right here. Maybe a lesser version with the X31 package?
Second picture clearly has dual exhaust and the tailgate hopefully is an option as not everyone wants that electronic overly complicated though useful option. Those that use the bed for dirt and work it as to be durable which the multi-pro I wouldn’t trust to be trouble free in 5-10 years of use/abuse. They can easily swap it out on preproduction models so maybe that is the reason you don’t see it here? Don’t get hung up on minor details on mules running around, things change…
They changed the pics. Originally was a white one.
These wheels do not look aggressive enough for the SLT Trim, they would better off as an option for the Sierra PRO.
Not really feeling this refresh. Really want to see the new LT Trailboss.
Now GM has an XLT. Wow
The off-road tires are anything but, only gm calls them off-road even Goodyear refuses to call them off-road.
Tire rack rates the majority of H/T tires better off-road.
Looks like a Pro to me , With Black Bumpers and No Dual Exhaust
Black Grille ,Black Badges Pro for sure
Really nice. I guess my problem with the refreshed Sierra is the Denali grill.
That’s a work truck you guys, not even an SLE
Now that’s a SLT ,not that pic you had before
Not digging the new frameless grille at all! This is not a step in the right direction! Now with both refreshed GM trucks you are forced to decide whether you want the cheap interior but better looking exterior of the outgoing model or the great interior with the botched facelift on the refresh…Ugh!
I agree. I was waiting for a decent picture of the new slt, hoping for good things. Unfortunately in my opinion, they missed the mark with the refresh. The old model was much more classy looking.
Looks good but I hate those vertical black things at the corner of the front bumper/fascia where the fog lights used to go.
If you check out:
“INTRODUCING THE NEW 2022 GMC SIERRA: on the internet, you can see all the grills.
The 2022 Sierra displayed is the SLE not the SLT.
Hope this helps.
Nice looking truck for sure
The fender wells look hideous.
I thought AT4 was the equivalent to Z71….
AT4 is the GMC version of Trailboss
X31 is the GMC version of the Z71
The truck looks great, the grill looks like it was made in high school shop class.
The grill needs some help!
