Earlier today, GM Authority brought you the first real world pictures of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT with the X31 Package. Now, we’re back at it with real world pictures of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra Pro with the X31 Package.
For those who may not know, the GMC Sierra Pro is the new name for the base-model trim in the 2022-model-year lineup, renaming the base-model dubbed the “Sierra” that was previously offered for the 2021 model year.
As for the X31 Package, this optional extra returns to the GMC Sierra 1500 lineup with the introduction of the 2022-model-year refresh. The X31 Package includes a variety of off-roading-oriented bits and pieces, and will be available on refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra Pro, SLE, Elevation, and SLT trim levels. The package requires four-wheel drive, as well as either a Double Cab or Crew Cab body configuration.
The X31 Package is essentially the GMC Sierra 1500’s equivalent to the Chevy Silverado 1500’s Z71 package, and offers the following content when equipped by the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 (relevant RPO codes listed in parentheses):
- Off-Road suspension
- Hill Descent Control (RPO code JHD)
- Skid plates (RPO NZZ)
- Heavy-duty air filter (RPO K47)
- X31 hard badge
- Auto-locking rear differential (Sierra Pro only) (RPO G80)
- 2-speed transfer case (Sierra Pro, SLE, SLT only) (RPO NQH)
- Rear wheelhouse liners (SLE, Elevation only) (RPO B1J)
- 18-inch 6-spoke machined aluminum wheels with Dark Grey Metallic accents (SLE only) (RPO UHN)
- 265/65R18SL all-terrain, blackwall tires (SLE, SLT only) (RPO XCK)
- 275/60R20SL all-terrain, blackwall tires (Elevation only) (RPO QAE)
- Two-speed Auto-Trac transfer case (SLE, Elevation only) (RPO NQH)
- Dual exhaust (SLE, Elevation, SLT only) (RPO N10)
Up front, the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra Pro is equipped with standard LED headlights and daytime running lights, which are placed within a revised front fascia design. LED taillights are also standard.
The base-model 2022 GMC Sierra Pro does not include the overhauled interior like the rest of the lineup. However, it still comes equipped with the GMC Pro Safety suite of active safety technology, which includes features like Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam.
Standard spec under the hood includes the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, the latter of which represents a 20-percent increase over 2021-model-year vehicles and pre-refresh 2022 Sierra Limited models. The naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 is also offered, producing 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Higher in the trim level cadence, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine and 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax are also available.
Under the skin is the GM T1 platform. Production will take place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and GM Silao plant in Mexico, plus the GM Oshawa plant in Canada once renovations are complete.

ick, styling reminds me of a wood tick
For a Base Truck, the overall appearance is good, I like it.
I thought that the base truck was uglier and had steel wheels???
The Base Model will still come standard with the Steel Wheels but based on this photo it looks as though it will have 2 more Wheel options which is good.
Also, keep in mind these 2 trim changes for the 2022 Chevy WT/custom and sierra pro.
1, standard dual automatic climate
2, optional power driver’s seat.
As this base truck will MSRP for ~40g, expect it to go for almost 30g after incentives if shopped right. That’s about the same as what my 2009 Silverado LT was brand new…….. With the same horsepower and lots more torque, and more interior options.
And may I also add and G80 rear end, and newer transmissions and 25% better fuel economy-range
It looks/named like an Oldsmobile…
The refreshed front end is killing me. GMC took a work of art and trashed it. What were the designers trying to accomplish, make the front end look like a Ford F150? Fail all around.
Work of art, you can’t be serious? The current model is overdone and a jagged bucktooth look, at least they smoothed it out some. It still isn’t pretty (no current truck is pretty) but work of art, thanks for the laugh, I needed to start my day with that!
Art is always subjective. Your opinion that the MY 2019-2021 front end is not a work of art does not invalidate my opinion that it is. The funny part is, while we disagree on the aesthetics of 2019-2021 front end styling, we agree that the 2022 styling is terrible. Have a good day.
It’s not bad, in terms of the lines; what gm did was make everything flow together between the grille and the headlights, on the 2019 model that wasn’t quite the case and yes, that model looks good too, I’m currently driving one myself.
Let’s see a different colored one with a chrome grill, maybe it will look better.
I agree, but if the SLE Trim comes standard with a Monochrome Grille, you can bet that one would have to wait for an Aftermarket Chrome Grille to become available for the Base Model and that also means upgrading the Wheels and the Wheel Size just to tie it all together to make it look right, it might be worth it to spend the extra money on an SLT or the Level 1 Denali but, customizing your own truck from the Base Model has it’s own perks when comes to being that “One Of A Kind” truck on the street.
Thank goodness it doesn’t have ugly black wheels!
This will be the first year that you can get a two speed transfer case with the 2.7T. Im glad that its available now.
It would make total sense for gm to make the 8″ screens standard for all Pro and SLE Trim Levels at this point and because that truck is the Base Trim, it will come with the all Black Bumper and will still carry the Chrome Appearance Package option when requested by the dealer or consumer.
Do we know yet if the base models will keep the 7″ radio, or upgrade to the 8″ unit that was previously in the higher trim trucks?
This isn’t as offensive as when I first saw it in the press photos. Suppose that’s an actual bumper?
the story mentions LED tail lights, but those in the pictures are not LED’s
