Following the launch of the mild hybrid Cadillac XT5 and XT6 in China earlier this year, General Motors is extending the electrified powertrain to Cadillac‘s smallest crossover. The automaker has just launched the new 2022 Cadillac XT4 mild hybrid with 48V technology as standard for all versions as the main novelty of the nameplate’s fourth model year in the Chinese market.
The 2022 Cadillac XT4 mild hybrid adopts exactly the same system its older siblings debuted, representing the first time the compact crossover has received an electrified powertrain in China as well as in any other international market. In addition, the 2022 XT4 also debuts a new intelligent voice assistance system that completes its high level of connectivity while improving safety on board.
“The new XT4 shows Cadillac is listening to our customers through its enhanced connectivity, greater efficiency and improved safety,” said Vice President of Cadillac in China, Chris Biggs, in an official statement. “It will meet the changing lifestyles and needs of our customers in one of the luxury market’s most competitive segments,” he added.
Like the mild hybrid Cadillac XT5 and XT6 on sale in China, the 2022 Cadillac XT4 mild hybrid combines the well-known turbocharged 2.0L LSY I-4 engine with an electric motor and 48V battery, both of which are powered by a power management module and a hybrid control unit. The powertrain produces a combined 233 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, mated to GM’s 9-speed automatic transmission.
GM says the system installed in the 2022 Cadillac XT4 mild hybrid boasts advanced features such as a responsive stop/start system, electric assist, electric idle, regenerative braking for energy recovery and smart charging, all contributing to reduce fuel consumption by 5 to 6 percent. According to the company, all of this also provides a quieter and smoother driving experience.
The 2022 Cadillac XT4 mild hybrid is now available for sale in China, which includes other additions such as the latest version of the Cadillac User Experience supporting the Baidu local search engine smart voice assistance system, and two new exterior colors: Greige and Territory. The changes will keep the XT4 in force as one of the brand’s best-selling models in the Asian country, with 160,000 units sold to date.
Here is the official pricing of the 2022 Cadillac XT4 mild hybrid in the Chinese market:
- 2022 Cadillac XT4 Trend: 261,700 CNY (about $41,100 USD at the current exchange rate)
- 2022 Cadillac XT4 Luxury: 292,700 CNY ($45,950 USD)

Mild hybrid for China, yet the same E2XX platform in the USA can’t get the existing E2XX-tuned transverse TTV6 (from the XTS V-Sport) as an XT4 V-Sport / Blackwing.
Hence Cadillac China gets a CT6, and an XT4 that is localized to their market.
The incredibly shrinking GMNA, continues. Did I mention Stellantis has a hot new performance wagon in the works?
i doubt they’ll bring that station wagon to north america.
I suspect it’s a Dodge version of the Levante. Meant to keep gas powered cars selling after the 300/Charger/Challenger go out of production.
A Magnum with a twin turbo V6, basically.
why only a 5 or 6% jump in fuel economy? should be a full hybrid, the fuel economy increase would be a lot more.
Mild hybrids help meet certain regulatory requirements, and are very cheap to add. It helps auto makers claim their whole fleet is “electrified” – when really, all they’ve done is added an advanced start/stop system that handles idling better.
Or, in one word: Money. It’s a lot cheaper to do mild hybrid.
GM, what about us here in the USA? I’ve been waiting to buy a new XT4 since the beginning of the pandemic. Should I wait for this mild hybrid to come to the US or should I buy a Volvo?
Buy a Lyriq.Keep your dollars in the U.S.
If Cadillac is going to do a mild hybrid instead a full hybrid, it makes more sense to offer it as a standard engine across the XT line-up across North America of a bump of 5%-6% fuel economy increase and slightly better performance over the non mild hybrid engines. GM is leaving money on the table for Cadillac badly.
Isn’t everything a mild hybrid over there by now?
No, but it does help GM meet China’s growingly stringent environmental mandates.
So I was expecting to see more power, but I guess this “mild” hybrid arrangement doesn’t do much for that. Isn’t the existing U.S. XT4 already making 237hp?
What I would like to see is a true hybrid offering that take power up over 300 but still allows me to not rely 100% on electricity alone. I’m just not there yet for my next vehicle.
Malibu and LaCrosse mild hybrids gone. GM is going all the way with full electrics. No tweenies.
