Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Yukon sales enabled the full-size SUV family to move a spot in its its competitive set when ranked by sales volume. Before we get into the figures, allow us to explain our approach to the figures: Ford combines sales of the Expedition and Expedition Max into a single line item, while GM’s Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL are reported on separate line items. To keep it apples-to-apples, we’re going to combine sales of the Tahoe with those of the Suburban, and do the same with sales of the Yukon and Yukon XL.

With that out of the way, here’s the landscape: the Yukon’s corporate cousins, the Chevy Tahoe (see running Chevrolet Tahoe sales) and Chevy Suburban (see running Chevrolet Suburban sales) continued to jointly lead the pack, followed immediately by the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, displacing the Ford Expedition family (see running Ford Expedition sales) to third place. As far as we remember, this is the first time that this has taken place. Filling out the bottom of the list were the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia, as well as the all-new Jeep Wagoneer, which began to launch this summer and therefore had very limited sales volume.

The Tahoe and Suburban outsold the Expedition by 17,173 units. In fact, the Tahoe alone outsold the Expedition during the quarter by 7,506 units. Meanwhile, the Yukon family – comprised of the regular-length Yukon and extended-length Yukon XL – outsold the Expedition, by 732 units.

By comparison, sales of the Expedition fell 14 percent to only 16,696 sales, less than a third of The General.

The GM Authority Take

The impressive sales performance of the GMC Yukon family enabled it to outsell the Ford Expedition range during the third quarter of 2021, moving into second place in the segment just behind the Chevy Tahoe/Suburban corporate cousins. In fact, the GMC entries performed even better than their Chevy counterparts by posting a 24 percent growth rate compared to 10 percent for the Tahoe/Suburban.

We still attribute the highly positive circumstance to two factors:

The GM SUVs were overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year. With its new looks, technology, enhanced performance, and optimized efficiency, we expect the all-new 2021 GMC Yukon to continue improving GM’s already-dominant position in the highly-lucrative full-size SUV space, as supply allows. The full-size SUVs range, which includes the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukons and Cadillac Escalade, are believed to be the biggest drivers of revenue and profit for GM.

2022 Ford Expedition Timberline

But The General’s competitors are not sitting still. In September, Ford unveiled the refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition to take on GM’s SUVs, featuring two new trim levels, revised styling, more power, and the latest tech. That includes the all-new Expedition Timberline, offered as the most off-road-capable Expedition ever, to take on Yukon AT4 and Tahoe/Suburban Z71 and the 2022 Ford Expedition Stealth Edition Performance Package, which adds unique styling upgrades plus 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer

Meanwhile, FCA Stellantis recently launched the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer as a Tahoe and Yukon rival with gobs of tech and a new take on full-size SUV styling.

  1. Shoulda put the dash gear selector and grill on the trucks.

    1. There is a lot of overlap between Jeep and Ram. Wagoneer has the potential to be it’s own (sub)brand like Land and Range Rover. FCA did great design work pre Stellantis merger that I hope continues.
GMC has been positioned as a Jeep rival and is little brother to Chevrolet no more. GMC will eventually introduce a Hummer version of Yukon which will be dynamite!!

  2. The new wagoneer may outsell the ford with that interior. Looks great. The new Expedition interior is awful for anything except a zoom meeting.

  3. Denali Yukon is probably the best looking of the 3 models! Cadillac has techie dash, a little nicer upholstery but a huge different in price, and the same engine and transmission!

If I were buying now, the Yukon Denali would be my choice!

    1. The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade account for 50% of all large SUV sales in the US. GM makes 340,000 of them every year and exports about 80,000 to 31 countries. They’re made in GM’s plant in Arlington, Texas, which is said to be the most profitable assembly plant in the world. We estimate they generate $20 billion in revenue for GM and about $4 billion in profits. Autoline Daily.

      1. Thanks, Norm. Love these types of stats. Wow, so that’s 20% gross profit margin on these SUVs alone. I remember reading an obscure article when these SUVs were new for 2007. Focused on the Escalade, the article stated GM paid for its plant retooling costs in the first 3 months of 2007 Escalade sales alone.

      2. Arlington is indeed the most profitable plant in the USA, globally… hmmm Tesla Shanghai might generate more at its 600K run rate now. For GM though number 2 is Flint, I think by 2024 Factory Zero will be number 1 or 2 in revenue.

  5. I’ve been in an Expedition, Yukon, and Tahoe within the last 5 years. The Yukon had the most bling, the Expedition was respectable in all areas, but I just loved the Tahoe. Great vehicles.

  6. GM would have sold even more of the full-Size, body-on-frame SUV’s if they would have made more vehicles and stopped their “Stealers” from ripping-off buyers by charging around $6K-extra over and above MSRP for them. The Yukon/Tahoe Forum is full of buyers encountering that sales tactic and many of the commenters said they just walked out on the attempted thievery.

    1. Doubtful, the average days on the lot is 18 for the tahoe, and I thought the “clock” on that metric started when the vehicle is shipped from the factory, so subtract a few days for transit. Until supply catches up to demand, expect to pay a market adjustment. If you have been to a dealer lately, you know they have almost no inventory to sell. I believe corvette’s are around 25K adjustment at the moment. Dealers would not be charging the markup if people were walking.

  7. Big winner for GM. Glad they brought back the diesel in these full sized mainstream SUV’s. Maximum safety and comfort in these rides. Isn’t that what you want in a motor vehicle?
