General Motors Complimentary Remote Access Plan Exclusive To Retrofit-Eligible Vehicles

General Motors is offering one year of complimentary usage of its OnStar Remote Access Plan to GM customers who purchased a vehicle eligible for retrofit of certain comfort features, including heated seats, ventilated seats, and heated steering wheels. Unfortunately, the complimentary offer does not extend to customers with vehicles affected by other issues related to the microchip shortage.
For those readers who may be unaware, General Motors announced this past November that as a result of the ongoing global microchip shortage, the automaker would delete heated seats, ventilated seats, and heated steering wheels from several of its model lines, including vehicles from the Buick, Cadillac, GMC, and Chevrolet brands. Just a few of the models affected by the feature deletion include the Buick Envision, Cadillac XT4, Cadillac XT6, GMC Acadia, GMC Sierra, Chevy Blazer, Chevy Equinox, and Chevy Silverado. Check out GM Authority’s microchip shortage coverage for more information on which specific models and trim levels are affected from each of the four U.S. General Motors brands.
In a follow-up announcement, General Motors stated that it would retrofit models affected by the deletion of these three features. GM also stated that it would cover the costs of the feature retrofit, and provide customers affected by the feature deletion with one year of complimentary usage of its Remote Access Plan, which includes features like on-demand vehicle diagnostics, remote key fob, voice service, and vehicle location.
Following the announcement, GM Authority received multiple messages from readers inquiring as to whether the complimentary usage of its Remote Access Plan would also extend to those customers affected by the deletion of features like automatic engine stop/start and AFM/DFM, or those customers affected by delivery delays, all of which are the result of the microchip shortage.
GM Authority reached out to General Motors regarding this issue, and received the following response from Senior Manager, OnStar & Infotainment Communications, Stephanie Obendorfer:
“GM has made the decision to provide all eligible vehicles that will require retrofits for heated and ventilated seats and/or heated steering wheels with a complimentary subscription to GM’s Remote Access plan, for 12 months after the point of sale,” Obendorfer told GM Authority. “The offer would only apply to those buyers of those eligible vehicles that require retrofits.”

Do you think GM would remove the Stop/Start chip from my Sierra ? 😉
I love free warranty work!
Glad I got my colorado before they started deleting heated seats, I would probably have a Ram right now otherwise. I like my colorado and glad I got it, but without heated seats, I wouldn’t have even looked at it. As far as on-star, they can shove that offer. As I said I enjoy my colorado, bit if there was a reason for me to not buy another it would be on-star. As soon as I bought the vehicle the salesman was very adamant that we go through and press the blue button to set up on-star. Of course they offer a free extra few months if you go ahead and sign up for a plan. I did agree to sign for a basic plan so I could do Door locks and check status via my phone, same as I had in my previous Ram and same price. Supposed to have 3 free months and another 3 free for signing up immediately. Next month I get billed for the “standard” combo package at $40. They refunded the $40, only to bill it again a week later. After the 5th phone call I finally told them to cancel everything related to on-star and remove all credit card info from my account. Thought that was the end of it till the next month, another charge. This has gone on every month for the past 6 months now. Last time I told them they no longer have permission to retain any information about me as I no longer want to be an on-star customer so delete every piece of info they have ever had on file. I told them if I get another charge after this conversation I would pursue legal action. Of course let then know they were being recorded as well. I got several emails the next day saying things were being removed. I checked yesterday and they no longer have my credit card on file, they do still have my contact info listed, but as long as they don’t magically find my credit card and bill it again, I am fine. Bottom line, I will never subscribe to scam star again and if the features offered by on-star ever become important enough to me to make a purchase decision, I simply will not purchase a GM vehicle. So yes, GM, your on-star offer in lieu of factory installed heated seats is worthless.
I have had the opposite experience with on star. I would gladly pay for the service I receive and my next vehicle purchased will have to have on star. I was in a bad accident and on star was my life line. I was confused and not one single person at the accident would move the air bags to check on me. The lady from on star immediately called for help and talked with me until help arrived.
Living on Michigan, o would not buy a vehicle without heated seats or steering wheel. Retrofit or not. GM needs to get their act together on their. Henry Ford would have made his own chips.
