American consumer intelligence and data analytics company J.D. Power has placed Chevy dead last in the Mass Market segment with the recent J.D. Power 2021 Mexico Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.
The J.D. Power APEAL Study ranks automotive brands on customers’ emotional attachment and excitement regarding a new vehicle purchase. The rankings are based on customer responses to J.D. Power survey questions, which are then used to calculate a score for each brand based on a 1,000-point scale, with higher scores indicating greater customer satisfaction.
The recent J.D. Power 2021 Mexico APEAL Study was fielded between May and September of the 2021 calendar year, and is based on survey responses from 6,733 original owners of 2018 through 2020 model-year vehicles. In Mass Market Brand Ranking, J.D. Power ranked a total of 15 automotive brands. Chevy scored last in the ranking with 847 points, behind Suzuki in fourteenth with 850 points, and Fiat in thirteenth with 856 points. At the top of the list is Jeep with 905 points, followed by Mazda in second with 904 points and Hyundai in third with 892 points. The Mass Market Brand Ranking segment average was 873 points.
Interestingly, in the Premium Brand Ranking list, GMC secured a first-place spot with 925 points, ahead of Mercedes-Benz in second with 916 points, BMW in third with 897 points, and Audi in fourth with 881 points. Only four brands were ranked in the Premium Brand Ranking list. Notably, GMC was at the top of the Premium segment in the J.D. Power 2021 Mexico Vehicle Dependability Study as well.
In the latest 2021 study, J.D. Power identifies engine and transmission quality as the most important driver of customer satisfaction. Fuel economy was considered the second-most important factor in the study.
J.D. Power also indicated that the gap in customer satisfaction between Premium Brands and Mass Market brands continues to shrink, with the gap in the 2021 study down to 26 points, as compared to 35 points in 2020 and 62 points in 2019.

Is this based on vehicles solely built in Mexico or on all models built globally with the assessment being made in Mexico?
If it is just based on Mexican built Chevrolet’s, perhaps, GM should consider moving production back to the United States and Canada to get their ratings back up!
Why would it be Mexican made autos only? Some of the rivals listed do not have Mexican manufacturing.
This site has often profiled the many GM China cars sold in Mexico such as Boajun made) Equinox & Groove or the Cavalier sedan and Orlando MVP.
Automakers love Mexico because it has a ton of free trade agreements unless the US.
strange study… Rolls Royce, BMW, Mini, Mercedes Benz, Audi… those cars all guys rave for having not in list… how could be… so if Chevrolet is in list, so they are well positioned
It would make more sense if you read the article and saw that this is the “Mass Market” list, not the “Premium Brand” list.
Mexico sells chinese made products.
Clearly it says that for the Premium portion, GMC ranked 1st, MB 2nd, BMW 3rd and Audi 4th.
Equinox Bajoun: incorrect. It is a Captiva, Bajoun 530 re-badged. Orlando MVP was never sold in Mexico. Only in Canada.
Big Game Al. This discussion of Mexico made cars to be sent back to the US has long been in the coffin. Why bringing it up again? NO ONE CARES where the car is made.
Mexico has been building some Audis for the entire world for 5 years now, same as VWs for more than 50 years.
MB has a JV with Nissan in Mexico to produce the GLB class.
BMW has the 3 series (almost half of the volume for the world) made in Mexico and exclusivity of the new Series 2.
Toyota makes the Tacoma
Honda makes the HRV and the Fit
Mazda makes the 3 and the CX30
Infinity QX50
Jetta, GLI, Versa, Sentra, Tiguan, Chevrolet Onix, Mustang Mach E, Kia Rio, Forte, Hyundai Elantra, Accent, the Jeep Compass and a long list of E vehicles in the pipeline of all manufacturers.
Why do you think GM is the world? and by bringing back the Silverado it would “move the needle”?
Wake up. Looks like you are one of the only few concerned and still questioning foreign quality.
Esteban for you to say MEXICO sells chinese made products, is totally inacurate.
If it is only for GM, the data is as follows: Buick Encore (KR), Buick Enclave (US), Buick Envision (CN, this one just as in the US and Canada as China build its own version).
Cadillac: Escalade (US), XT4 (US), XT5 (US)
GMC: Sierra (US & MX), Yukon (US), Terrain (MX), Acadia (US)
Chevrolet: Spark (KR), Aveo (CN), Onix (MX), Cavalier (CN), Tracker (BR), Groove (CN), Equinox (MX), Traverse (US), Tahoe (US), Suburban (US), Express (US), Captiva (CN), Silverado (US & MX depending on the trim level)
Gather your info. Then write….
Please disclose if J.D. Powers receives any compensation from any of the carmakers listed? I recently purchased a 2021 Blazer and so far it is quite awesome.
