Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Trax sales performance place it 16th out of 20 entries. The Honda HR-V led the pack with a 48 percent increase in sales volume to 36,957 units. The Trax’s corporate cousin, the Chevy Trailblazer, took second place with a very healthy 147 percent increase in sales, though it sold 11,426 less units than the HR-V. The Jeep Compass took third, followed by the Kia Soul in fourth with 21,565 deliveries and the Nissan Kicks in fifth with 20,773 units. The rest of the segment entries recorded less than 20,000 deliveries, including the Trax with 6,259 units.

The HR-V led the segment with a 14 percent segment share, up 6 percentage points, while the Chevy Trailblazer followed with a 10 percent segment share, up 6 percentage points to 25,531 sales. The Jeep Compass was close behind in third with a 9 percent share, down 2 percentage points. The rest of the segment each held less than a 9 percent share. The Trax accounted for 2 percent segment share, down 9 percentage points year-over-year. The Trax’s 16th place finish means that it outsold only the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, its corporate cousin – the Buick Encore, as well as the Mazda CX-3 and Fiat 500. The final two of those models have been discontinued.

It’s worth noting that Chevy fields two entries in this segment, the Trailblazer and Trax. The two crossovers are mechanically not related despite carrying the same base name. In fact, the Trailblazer slots between the Trax and Equinox in the brand’s vehicle lineup. The two Chevy models accounted for a cumulative 31,790 deliveries, down 20 percent year-over-year for a 12.2 percent segment share.

The figures give GM a 22 percent segment share compared to 27 percent for Hyundai-Kia and 14 percent for Stellantis (previously Fiat Chrysler Automobiles / FCA).

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but is rather in a segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia results nets 44,661 deliveries.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment (including the Kia Soul) contracted 7 percent to 259,715 units during Q3 2021, with the Chevy Trax performing worse than the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The continuing decline in Chevrolet Trax sales during the third quarter of 2021 is to be expected given that it’s facing internal competition from the all-new Chevy Trailblazer, which continues to sell very well, as well as GM’s strategy to dedicate more space at the GM Bupeyong plant in South Korea to produce the Trailblazer instead of the Trax. It’s worth noting that the GM San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico, which in the past was the second facility to produce the Trax for North America, no longer does so.

Furthermore, a couple of months ago, Chevy dealers were told they would see no Chevy Trax shipments for the month of October 2021 as a result of the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. That accelerated an already dwindling supply of inventory, with it falling to just 12 days supply in early July.

GM sees the subcompact crossover segment as splitting into two distinct channels, and has positioned the Trailblazer and Trax accordingly. The first is a lower price segment with a price point of about $18,000, which is the space where the Chevy Trax resides. The second channel is a higher, more premium ATP space around the $23,000 price point, which is where the new Chevy Trailblazer resides.

And, as GM Authority previously reported, the Trax and Trailblazer both have the youngest buyers in the segment. As such the Trax can continue to serve as a more cost-effective alternative to young buyers. In spite of that, a report this past summer indicated that the Chevy Trax could be retired at the end of 2023, with a replacement on the GEM platform possible.

  1. GM has way too many car based cross overs. This one is crap and they screwed up on the Blazer as well. They should have used the Colorado Chassis for the Blazer and make it a 2 door convertible kinda like Ford did with the Bronco. Why not build a SUV on the Colorado Chassis?

    Reply
    1. An SUV based on the Colorado would cost twice as much as a Trax.
I don’t actually have anything against the Trax, except that it’s outdated and basically already replaced by the Trailblazer.

      1. You already have the TrialBlazer, why have the Trax and Trailblazer? You have the Equinox and the Blazer? Why? Get rid of the Traverse and the Trax and make the Blazer on the Colorado Chassis. Now you have the TrailBlazer, the Equinox, the New Blazer on the Colorado chassis, then the Tahoe and Suburban. Now you have all segments covered. Sub compact with the Trailblazer, Compact with the Equinox, Midsized with the New Blazer and Tahoe and Suburban for full sized.

  2. The know nothings never surprise me. Get rid of the Trax, it replaced the cancelled Sonic at a higher ATP. Blazer will always be car based, it’s the new “Camaro.” Want a truck buy a truck.

    1. 4 Runner which is built on the Tacoma chassis does very well and the Bronco is kicking ass and it is built on the Ranger Chassis. Obviously there is a market for midsized truck based SUV’s. What does GM do with the Blazer name plate? They make another car based crossover that mimics a car they are probably going to cancel in 2023. Smart. Oh ya, Blazer sales are tanking. But then again I know nothing.

Again, we think you’re confusing the Big Bronco and Baby Bronco if you think it looks like a Ford Escape circa 2011. The Baby Bronco is, in fact, built on the current Ford Escape platform and also shares the same engine line-up – a 1.5-liter EcoBoost and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost.

The actual Bronco is built on the Ford Ranger platform, and they both share the base 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. Bronco, however, adds an up-level 2.7-liter EcoBoost, and the Ranger does not.

  4. The reason it falls behind is that the damned bean counters at gm have failed time and again to update the thing. It needs a new interior.

  5. Trax is understandably low but OTOH they could give it a MCE and clean more. GM is cleaning up in the segment, my bad “De Kia is better”….

    Reply
    1. Kia/Hyundai does still own more of the segment, as the article concedes. The Trailblazer isn’t the best vehicle or the best value in the segment. So, in terms of sales volume in the segment, the Kia is indeed better.

I’d be interested in knowing how much more lopsided the sales would be if all b/c segment car sales were included, since lowercase gm, in their infinite wisdom, completely abandoned the sedan and hatchback segment.

Realistically you could tack on 20k units in just kia forte sales. Probably double or triple that for Toyota and Honda b/c segment sedans for which gm has no competition. With that small, but reasonable consideration gm segment share is looking a whole lot smaller than this article implies.

      Reply
  6. Yes!, like clockwork….

1st the article is about CUVs, how you end-up talking about sedans?, I’m sure Ford has a nice sedan for you as much as H/K has a fullsize pickup. 2nd GM is still very competitive in the compact CUV market, I thought you want GM to be competitive…

    Reply
    1. Talking about b/c segment sedans is a totally reasonable jump because subcompact+ segment sedans are cross shopped with subcompact+ crossovers. Lets be real. Sedans, hatchbacks, and CUVs are all realistically the same thing, so doesn’t it make sense to include all of those sales in this comparison?

Full size pick ups are not cross shopped with this segment.

I do want gm to be competitive in the segment, which is why its important to point out how lacking they truly are.

      Reply
      1. No I won’t, because it’s not relevant to this article but on a side note Camry, Civic etc. lost out to Rav4, CRV etc.. FCA was ahead of the curve when they dropped sedans, Korea Inc. was late to the party as they too had to drop certain cars from the US market. As for lacking I see no Ford competition for Trailblazer as they killed Ecosport.

        Reply
        1. Ok, I mean the Civic and Corolla still move 200k+ units a year despite your denial and H/K sedans move another 100k.. And the only thing that gm has that can remotely be cross shopped are these garbage crossovers… Soooo yeah… your logic is bad.

          Reply
          1. I didn’t bring up logic but you probably come up short also. As said compact cars are shrinking in America, note the latest Corolla is a CUV to mask declining sedan sales, the Civic keeps increasing in price as sales get lower and CRV/HRV takes sales. Saying all GM CUVs are garbage tells your disposition, just say “the Kia is Better” so that way we know where you coming from..
