2022 Chevy Suburban: Here’s What’s New And Different

The 2022 Chevy Suburban represents the second model year of the 12th-generation full-size SUV, which was all-new for 2021 (see 2021 Chevrolet Suburban details). Despite only being in its second model year of the current generation, the Suburban sees a broad range of changes and updates for the 2022 model year.
For the uninitiated, the Chevrolet Suburban is an extended-length variant of the Chevrolet Tahoe, with the former being roughly 15 inches longer than the latter. In fact, the Tahoe receives the same changes as the Suburban.
Model Line
The 2022 Chevy Suburban remains unchanged from the 2021 model year, and is as follows:
- Commercial (1FL)
- LS
- LT
- RST
- Z71
- Premier
- High Country
Notably, the RST, Z71, and High Country trim levels were introduced for the 2021 model year.

On the outside, the 2022 Chevy Suburban sees the deletion of two exterior colors and the addition of three new hues.

Interior
Inside, the 2022 Chevy Suburban sees quite a few changes and updates. For starters, Rear Park Assist, which was standard on all models except for Premier and High Country, has been deleted. To note, Premier and High Country models had the more advanced Front and Rear Park Assist as standard for the 2021 model year, and the feature was not available on trims lower than Premier and High Country. For the 2022 model year, Front and Rear Park Assist becomes standard on all trim levels.
Meanwhile, Reverse Automatic Braking has been added as a new feature and is available on Premier and High Country models. For Premier models, the system requires Adaptive Cruise Control and the Enhanced Display and Alert Package, which also includes:
- HD Surround Vision
- Head-Up Display
- Rear Camera Mirror
- Rear Camera Mirror Washer
- Rear Pedestrian Alert
High Country models also require Adaptive Cruise Control when equipped with Reverse Automatic Braking.
A few changes take place to the infotainment systems, with the 2022 Suburban deleting the 10.2-inch Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system and 10.2-inch Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium system with connected Navigation. Both have been replaced by a new 10.2-inch diagonal Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium system with Google built-in. The new system is standard on LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country models. Meanwhile, the base 8-inch diagonal Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system remains standard on Commercial while becoming standard on LS, which previously shipped as standard with the 10.2-inch Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system.

There’s also changes to the Driver Information Center (DIC): for starters, the base 4.2-inch unit is standard only on Commercial and LS models for the 2022 model year, compared to being standard on on Commercial, LS, LT, RST and Z71 trims for the 2021 model year. In addition, the 8-inch diagonal multi-color enhanced Driver Information Center is replaced by a 12-inch diagonal multi-color enhanced Driver Information Center. This new 12-inch unit includes analog speedometer and tachometer gauges, so it’s not completely digital. No matter, it’s standard on LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country models.

The HD Radio feature has been deleted, continuing GM’s trend for deleting the feature. Additionally, SD Card Reader located within the front center console has been deleted. The two USB data ports (one USB-A and another USB-C) – which were part of the SD Card Reader hub – remain as standard on all models and trims. In fact, they’re now standard on the Commercial trim level, which previously offered the ports as an option.
The front center seat (20 percent seat) delete option on FL models. Consequently, the shipped loose parts option – which was included and only available with the front center seat delete – are also deleted. Notably, the latter was included and only available with the aforementioned seat delete. Meanwhile, a Rear Fold Flat Cargo Organizer has been added as a dealer-installed option.
The Enhanced Trailer View feature is also new for the Suburban for the 2022 model year. It’s available on Premier and High Country models and includes:
- Trailer Camera Provisions
- Trailering Assist Guidelines
- Auxiliary Trailer Camera
For Premier models, Enhanced Trailer View requires Trailer Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors, Enhanced Display and Alert Package, and the Max Trailering Package (see Packages section below for package content).
The Illumination Package is a new dealer-installed item for the 2022 model year. It’s available on LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country models, and includes:
- Illuminated mirror Chevrolet emblem (a mirror puddle light that projects the Chevy logo)
- Illuminated front door sill plates
- Illuminated liftgate sill plate
Other new additions to the interior include:
- Smart Trailer Integration Indicator
- Included and only ab available via the Advanced Trailering Package on LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country models
- Buckle To Drive
- Standard on all models
- Sport Pedal Cover Kit (LPO-level item)
- Available on all models
- Keyless Entry Keypad (LPO-level item)
- Only available on FL models
Mechanical
The 2022 Chevy Suburban continues to offer three engine choices – two gasoline V8s and one turbo-diesel six:
- 5.3L L84 V8 (Gasoline) – Features variable valve-timing and direct injection, and produces an SAE-certified 355 horsepower / 265 kilowatts @ 5600 RPM with 383 pound-feet / 519 newton meters of torque @ 4100 RPM.
- 6.2L L87 V8 (Gasoline) – Features variable valve-timing and direct injection, and produces an SAE-certified 420 horsepower / 313 kilowatts @ 5600 RPM with 460 pound-feet / 623 newton meters of torque @ 4100 RPM.
- 3.0L Duramax LM2 I6 (Diesel) – Features dual-overhead cams and direct injection, and produces 277 horsepower / 207 kilowatts @ 3750 RPM with 460 pound-feet / 623 newton meters of torque @ 1500 RPM.
However, the 2022 Suburban sees revised availability of the 6.2L L87 V8 engine now available on RST and Z71 models via the Sport Performance Package and Off-Road Performance Package.

Additionally, the engine block heater becomes available with the 5.3L L84 V8 engine and 6.2L L87 V8 engine on all equipment groups, except for Z71 models. For the 2021 model year, this feature was only available in conjunction with the 3.0L LM2 I6 Turbo-Diesel Duramax engine.
There’s also a slight revision to transmission availability, in that a new 10-speed automatic unit has been added with RPO code MHS. This new transmission is standard on models equipped with either of the V8 engines. Meanwhile, the MQC-coded transmission – which was the only unit offered for the 2021 model year – is now paired exclusively with the Duramax diesel engine.
The 2022 model year also sees the addition of GM’s electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) as an exclusive feature for Z71 models equipped with the new Off-Road Capability Package, which also includes Magnetic Ride Control and Air Ride Adaptive suspension. Notably, the eLSD was previously unavailable on Chevy’s full-size SUVs, meaning customers who wanted the feature had to opt for the GMC Yukon XL AT4.
Meanwhile, the Advanced Trailering Package now includes Smart Trailer Integration Indicator, which replaces the Advanced Trailering System. The package also includes Hitch Guidance with Hitch View and a Trailer brake controller. Additionally, the Hitch Guidance with Hitchview feature is no longer included with the Advanced Trailering Package on LS models.

2022 Chevy Suburban Availability
The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is assembled by GM USA at the GM Arlington plant in Arlington, Texas, USA. Both the 2022 Chevy Suburban and its shorter sibling, the 2022 Chevy Tahoe, went into production on October 4th of this year, as previously reported by GM Authority. As such, dealer inventory of the full-size SUV is readily available.
Looking ahead, the Suburban is expected to see minor changes and updates for the 2023 model year. However, there is a possibility that an all-new, high-performance variant may enter the market – perhaps as a Suburban SS – and it may utilize the supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8 engine.

Here’s When 2024 Chevy Tahoe And Suburban Orders Will Open
No major changes expected for the 2024 MY.

Correction: The Tahoe is a shorter length version of the Suburban. The Suburban was introduced 60 years before the Tahoe’s introduction.
Please GM … If you’d give the Chevrolet Express Vans just 25% of the attention you give these “soccer mom specials” named Suburban SUV who might only see dirt if they back thru the flower bed or explore a bad pot hole … you’d have to run 3 shifts 24/7 to meet demand. And to those soccer mom’s reading this … you in reality are driving a “jacked up 4wd station wagon”.
Agree with Brad: I really wonder how capable even the Z71 version of these large 4WD/AWD soccer mom SUV’s really are? They try to look the part, but would you actually take them where you’d take a Jeep Wrangler?
Yes, I took my brand new Z71 offroad where only Wranglers would dare go. At times my 2 front wheels would become airborne and a couple of times I hit bottom with a “clunk” noise hitting a bolder. Conclusion: Z71 doesn’t have enough ground clearance but I would not submit my Tahoe again to a similar punishment unless it was to escape from “wife and death”…
Mondio: Wise choice to treat your new Tahoe with TLC. The Wranglers and Broncos are beasts for the rocks. Tahoe is a terrific vehicle for the street. You certainly don’t want to sit in your Moab motel room crying that you tore the bottom up.
I’ve seen and heard of many Jeep roll overs in Colorado and Utah by clueless folks who purchased new rigs and thought they could go anywhere with them.
Does anyone here on GMA have one of these Suburbans? Just interested in real world opinion on the pushbutton shifter on the dash.
Once you use it a few times you will like it very much. I love mine in the gmc Denali.
I just went from a 2015 LTZ Tahoe with the veritable column shifter to a 2021 Tahoe RST with the new push/pull dash shifter. At first it seemed unintuitive, but after 3 months, I’m getting somewhat used to it. I do miss the column shifter. Not sure what GM gained by changing it.
They didn’t gain anything but following the (useless) trend where traditional shit levers are systematically replaced by gear rotary selectors or push buttons….They should have sticked to the usual column shifter.
Kudos for offering the 3.0 diesel in the Suburban. You would not take a Suburban to Moab to crawl around the Utah sandstone. Strictly a vehicle for the suburbs and police and fire chiefs. Also terrific for hardened retrofits for government officials.
The Cadillac Beast is Meh, compared to a hardened, lengthened and customized Suburban. Now there’s a ride befitting Uncle Sam and his guests.
I hate that infotainment screen how it sticks up on the dashboard out of nowhere. The GMC Yukon Denali was designed to incorporate that screen right into the dash. Until Chevy does that, I think it makes the interior look second-class.
Agreed, some of the interior “info-tain-ment” systems seem to have been design by video gamers, not only puts the “ug” in ugly, but will lead to distracted driving an death.
I absolutely 100% agree. I just traded my 2021 Tahoe RST for a 2022 GMC Yukon Denali. I hated the look and ergonomics of the RST dash/ infotainment placement in the RST.
