The refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra debuts a long list of updates and changes for the pickup nameplate, including the reintroduction of the Regular Cab, Standard box body configuration for the U.S.
According to GM Authority sources, General Motors will once again offer the GMC Sierra in a Regular Cab, Standard Box configuration for U.S. buyers. At the moment, the GMC Sierra Regular Cab is only offered in the U.S. with the Long Box configuration.
To note, the Standard Box (or “mid-length” box) is 79.44 inches long and is available on the Crew Cab and the Double Cab body styles. The Short Box is 69.92 inches long, and is only available on the Crew Cab body style. The Long Box, which is currently only offered on Regular Cab models, is 98.2 inches long. It’s expected that the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra Regular Cab will only be available with the base-model Sierra Pro trim level, as is presently the case with the 2022 Sierra 1500 Limited.
As GM Authority reported previously, the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado, which could be considered the “corporate cousin” to the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra, will also be offered in the U.S. in a Regular Cab, Standard Box body variant.
As covered previously, the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 broke cover late last month with new exterior styling, an overhauled cabin space, powertrain updates and two new trim levels, namely the new Sierra AT4X off-roader, as well as the new range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate.
Engine options include the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine as standard, now producing 20 percent more torque for a maximum of 420 pound-feet. Horsepower is rated at 310 ponies. Further engine options include the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax, naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84, and naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87. Under the skin is the GM T1 platform. Production is set to take place at the GM Silao plant in Mexico and GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, followed by the GM Oshawa plant in Canada following the completion of renovations. The first units of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will arrive in dealers in Q1 of next year.

Shortbed reg cab Ltz diesel with 3.73 with trailboss lift in green! Where do I sign?
On your childs report card.
The only way that is going to happen is if you can find someone who has access to a salvage auction.
I hope your skill level is at least a 8 or you know someone who has talent ,
Some people don’t need a 4 door truck, short bed regular cab’s look awesome!
Amen, Jody.
@jody, true, but those people do not want a base truck either, come on GM, offer the regular cab in a higher trim version, it can’t be that hard. Give the people what they want.
About time they were offered, again. Bet if you find one at a dealer it will be white. Is wb still 119″ ? Not everyone needs or wants a crew cab and long wheelbase. Sometimes the bed size is more necessary than a back seat. It all comes down to preference. Still shame only one trim level.
Need one lower too the ground for easy in and out for us old folks.
Richard, Agree it could be lower.
Can you do an article on 2022 sierra versus 2022 siverado upgrading tire sizes without lifting vehicle ?
Minor adjustments ok to fit larger tires would be ok. I have a 2020 sierra and front wheel Wells with plastic wheel well moulding is very small especially illy compared to rear huge wells. Silverado looks like a much more generous front wheel well to start. I need a second truck and would prefer GMC ( have bought about 20 new GM vehicles over the years) but I want larger tires (not young kid ridiculously large) – a 285/65- 18 would make my day
Several custom shops have already built short boxes from new body style GMC and Chevy
Paint it red, go with the 6.2L, 8′ box and keep a spare set of rear tires in the garage.
A full bench seat would be nice.
Mary Barra gets my Christmas card. Many thanks. My ’14 S.L.E, 5/3 R.C.S.B. gets much attention. The only vehicle on my roads that gets more attention than the expensive imports. Of course the 20s and Bel-Tech add-ons help. Now about that 6.2 option………..Also to be built down the road in Oshawa. Another plus. Sign me up!
why is my comment not posting?
FINALLY! GM is losing ground to Ford and RAM, anything to help stop the market share erosion. The parts are available, it’s a no brainer! GM still needs an SS tuck and SUV, what are we waiting for? The EV Silverado is falling behind the Ford EV pickup, we should be the leader. GM is primarily trucks and SUVs, they should be able to stay ahead of the competition.
If you want one you had better buy it. Odds are sales will be low and it may not be here long.
I would think those want the regular cab, short box aren’t getting them to be a work truck, they want the high end trim packages. So please take note GM and also make the 6.2 engine available. Make it right for once.
Warms the chambers of my cold heart to see the regular cab SWB coming back for sale in the U.S.
Let’s just hope that GM is smart in marketing the GM twins. When the last version was shown and Mark Russ was showing off the new Chevy he should of been embarrassed. Ram hit a home run and GM hit a single.
Now if I could just get an extended cab… with the clamshell door. That extra little bit of space was perfect for my gun cases, and the extra legroom was nice.
If they only knew a lot of us would be willing to pay the same or more for a fully loaded Regular or Double cab over an equally equipped crew cab….
Make a performance single cab swb or a Denali single cab swb both with 6.2
if they made it avalaible i would drive to the dealer and trade my 2012 tomorrow
Reg cab , 6.5′ bed, 6.2l option, with any trim level available…… people would buy reg cab short box if they could get 6.2l, nice leather, bose sound, nicer rims….
GM, give us a reg cab, short bed with a 6.2l and the same trim levels to choose from as the crew cabs etc….
