Refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra AT4: First Look

The fully refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 once again offers the AT4 off-roading trim level, as well as a long list of updates and changes over the preceding 2021 model year and pre-refresh 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited. Now, GM Authority is taking a closer look at the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra AT4.

To note, the latest model refresh introduces two new trim levels to the lineup, including a new range-topper, the Sierra Denali Ultimate, and a new, more-capable off-roader, the AT4X. The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 slots in below the AT4X, once again offering the same off-roading capability as Sierra AT4 models of the past past, but not the same level of capability as the new AT4X.

Up front, the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 is equipped with a revised fascia treatment, similar to the rest of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup. Unique features include an AT4 badge located in the lower driver’s-side corner of the grille, while the horizontal slats covering the primary air intake get a dark finish. The GMC badge is done in red, as are the tow hooks located lower in the fascia. The front air dam was removed for greater clearance. The headlights were also revised for the 2022-model-year refresh with new lighting signatures and housings.

Compared to the AT4X, the standard AT4 has a darker grille finish and a different grille badge.

In the sides, we find the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 equipped with 18-inch wheels with a high-gloss black finish, wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac® mud-terrain tires. The stance is once again taller thanks to a 2-inch factory suspension lift and Rancho monotube shocks, as compared to the Multimatic DSSV dampers equipped by the AT4X. In back, the Sierra AT4 offers the CarbonPro carbon-fiber composite bed as an optional extra.

As for the greasy bits, the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 features the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine as standard, while the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine is optional. Both pair to a 10-speed automatic transmission, while a two-speed AutoTrac transfer case and automatic locking rear differential help to put the muscle down. Underbody skid plates provide protection.

Pricing for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 starts at $60,995. The first units of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will hit dealers in Q1 of the 2022 calendar year, while production will initially take place at the GM Silao plant in Mexico and the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, followed by the GM Oshawa plant in Canada following the completion of renovations.

  1. I’m sure a couple badges and bigger tire aren’t going to help as gas or diesel prices head to $5+ But then again a Colorado can get the same thing a lot cheaper and lighter on it’s wheels.

  2. I’m curious to see what options are available on this compared to the AT4X besides the obvious (DSSV, e-lockers).
Also curious to see pricing on an optioned out AT4 vs a AT4X with minimum options.
I think the AT4X without the diesel might be a deal breaker for some.

    1. Absolutely,no diesel will hurt. Why does Gm do everything half assed? Except Vette and Hummer!

      1. What happened to the TAHOE SS????
        Will it be built?….HOPE SO!!!!

    2. The AT4X will be a loaded AT4 plus the special off-road additional components (similar to the Denali Ultimate adding features to a loaded Denali) The old AT4 topped out just under $70k, estimating a similar price for a loaded AT4 with maybe a couple thousand dollars added on.

    3. Just because the 6.2 is standard on the AT4X, doesn’t mean they won’t offer the diesel as optional. That’s how it works on the Escalade.

      1. At least for now, GM already said the 3.0 Duramax Diesel is not going to be available, at least for now. I too hope that will change, although, I’m it the market for the AT4, if they put back all the goodies the microchip shortage took away. I may end up getting a Ford if they beat GM to a COMPLETE truck. Time will tell.

    4. AT4X comes with massage seats. That’s another difference.

    5. No diesel in the AT4X is absolutely a deal breaker for me. Not sure which route I’ll take now. I love everything about it – except the one thing I can’t get. Maybe there will be a 2500 AT4X for 2023??

  3. When is the AT4X gas coming to 3/4 tons?

  4. I’ve been waiting for GM Authority to show the AT4, but as usual, they skimped on showing the inside, focusing on door panels, dash materials, console materials and trim, etc. we’ve all seen the center stack screen, but I want to see what GM’s done to set AT4 apart from all the other sub-brands. Authority COULD DO BETTER!

    1. I have the same concern. They show the AT4X and Denali seats but not the AT4. If they are the same as the 2021’s with the kalahari inserts, I would be fine with it but as of now,we just don’t know.

      1. The build and price is available on the GMC website and shows the AT4 interior on the refresh trucks. It is the black with Kalahari, with minor tweaks which I think make it better than the original one.

  5. Why does gm authority keep promising to show the refresh and then just show whats on gm’s site and zero interior photos. Boo.

  6. Why no interior pictures of the refreshed at4

    1. I imagine the seats are the same as the current model with the tan (kalahari) inserts, but I want to see what the dash looks like.
I really hate GM right now for not offering the 3.0 diesel in the AT4X.

  7. I’m sure glad I brought a slightly used (8,000 miles) 2022 limited GMC Sierra AT4 6.2. I loved the fact if did’nt have the auto stop start feature. I also liked the column shifter as it adds center consule room, I hate that refreshed shifter down below. I liked the 2022 Limited grill, the refreshed all blacken look like a big void. The touch screen on the limited is just fine for me. The touch screen on the refresh is too big I think as it is a distractor or more flashing for virtigo or something plus the Air vents on the limited are better ositioned than the refreshed AT4. The only down side is I wished I had the nicer leather grain seats that was enhanced in the Refreshed AT4. I really love the 6.2 V8 (LS) engine. I wished they give you the option to have stock switch to disengage the DFM. I ended up getting a Pulsar LT( Look up on youtube) . It’s a must!
