U.S.-based Chevy Silverado fans eager to get the Bow Tie brand’s iconic pickup truck with a Regular Cab, Standard Box body style will be happy to learn that General Motors will offer that very soon with the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500.
According to GM Authority sources, General Motors will once again offer a Regular Cab, Standard Box configuration of the Chevy Silverado in the U.S. with the launch of the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500. However, the Regular Cab, Standard Box will only be available on the base-model 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Work Truck trim level, also known as the WT.
Notably, General Motors already sells Chevy Silverado Regular Cab, Standard Box model variants in a number of markets around the world, including in South America and the Middle East. Notably, the Middle East also gets offers the Regular Cab, Standard Box configuration in the RST and Trail Boss trims.
For those fans that have longed for the return of the Regular Cab, Standard Box Silverado in the U.S., this no doubt comes as great news. That said, the fact the body style will only be available with the base-model WT trim level may dampen the excitement a bit for some.
As a reminder, General Motors unveiled the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup truck in September, debuting a variety of changes and updates over the stop-gap 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited and pre-refresh 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500.
The refreshed 2022 model year is headlined by the introduction of a completely new interior, which is offered on LT trims and above (LT, LT Trail Boss, RST, ZR2, LTZ, High Country).
Highlights inside include a revised cockpit, including a new a digital 12.3-inch configurable instrument cluster, a large 13.4-inch color touchscreen, a range of new tech features plus a new console-style shifter (for models with the front bucket seats, as the column shifter will remain available on trucks with the front bench seat). Additionally, the range-topping High Country trim will offer the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system with towing capability.
The refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado also includes revised exterior styling on all models, more power and torque from the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, and greater towing capacity for the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine. Finally, the refreshed Silverado also introduces the new ZR2 off-road trim level.

Editor’s note: an earlier version of this article referred to the body configuration in question as the Regular Cab Short Bed/Box, which is technically not correct. First, we should note that that the Silverado offers three box sizes:
- Short: 70 inches long
- Standard: 80 inches long
- Long: 98 inches long
With that in mind, the configuration that GM will add for the refreshed 2022 Silverado in the U.S. market is the Regular Cab with the Standard Bed (80 inches). This is where things get dicey: since the Standard Bed is the shortest available box for the Silverado Regular Cab, it’s also sometimes referred to as the Short Bed. In any event, the Regular Cab and the 80-inch-long Standard Bed is what’s being added for the 2022 model year. Meanwhile, the Regular Cab Short Bed (70-inch-long box) configuration is not available in any market.

Step in right direction but still frustrating. Give us a break. Such a tease.
YEP!!!!!! Here you go people! But……not all the bells and whistles. WHY?????? Sure, sell it built to the hilt, in other places, but not here. Makes no sense at all. You can’t tell me that making this truck a Z/71 or better, is any more difficult than the work truck. I will stay away for a while yet. Oh, how I miss my old short box step sides.
About time
Good news indeed. This with a 5.3 and 4×4 is what i want. I’ll add things as needed later. Will test drive an updated 2.7 to be sure
Agreed, as someone with modest needs I too am interested in the 2.7 engine. I’d like to GM make the decision to allow us to special order the On Star w/sat radio an nav/system on the WT level. For those of us out there everyday the sat/radio is a luxury, but the nav/system a must … I luv my sat radio.
Give me the GMC with a Denali interior and I will order one today and sell my 2001 RCSB Sportside. Until then I am not buying.
Yeah….. between you and the other 2 buyers in that demographic I’m sure GM is going to make those available.
Back in the day a mid trim level was available in a RC but was a slow seller due to the ever growing popularity of crew, and ex./dbl. cabs and the high price that gm put on that trim in a RC and the rebates were always many Ks lower on a RC than the other cabs making buying a RC not such a fiscally wise move.
My RCSB stepside LT hibernates for the winter and I will keep it alive as long as i am.
Hey GM ! Listen/Read very hard. I can go with the WT Trim level … but. You’ve GOT TO OFFER TWO OPTIONS WITH THE ON STAR FEATURE …. sat/radio an nav/system. Those of us whose job requires travel need this and will thank you for it. We are simple people with simple needs … auto / air / cruise / cloth seats / carpeting (quieter) / am-fm-sat radio w/nav system / pwr windows & locks / tinted glass, normal stuff … you force us to buy what we don’t need … and sourcing three trucks right now and Ford’s F-150 in the SWB offers all the above … you should too. Then maybe next year we’d see a full sized 2-door Blazer, and another old friend I’d love to see in my drive way again … the Astro Cargo an Passenger van … I put close to 500,000 miles on two Astros … bullet proof. For those to young to know the 2 door full sized Blazer and the humble Astro were based on the SWB 1500 pickup … and GM how about you give us a 5 lug, 15″ rim so those who’d like those old school Crager 5 lug wheels could be used, the 6 lug just don’t look right.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 geez man. Time to move on.
One day you will be an old timer like Brad and myself.
Jeff, read my post to Miles ……..
Let’s see, 28 folks agreed with me, 2 disagreed with you … makes my score 30 to 1. Maybe it time for you to move on to the fact people want what they want without spending thousands more to get two options.
Offer it with the new interior and bucket seats with a 6.2 engine and BAM…the Silverado SS is born again…..they would sell the heck out of them. But nope, we get a work truck with vinyl and a 4-banger.
I Don’t get the complaints, it makes 310hp 420 tq. The famous 1st gen 454 SS, Lightning or 5.9 R/T didn’t make that much power, it’s probably a scoot to drive in a RCSB also you can option the W/T with LT options like wheels, paint and infotainment.
You are going to have to find a clean older one and put a 6.2 in it.
easy swap
It seems that marketing final gave a green light for a Reg/Short box in the USA but only targeting a small market. For one is who wants this configuration? I would say the young guys who likes the cool look. Those with limited resources allows them to get into a truck and able to do add on as you can afford. I’m sure the first add ones will be to add a lift kit and upgrade wheels and tires. The four cylinder 2.7l gets an upgrade for 2022 in torque and the light weight of the standard/short box will be more than enough to keep but it will be missing the cool factor.
Who wants this configuration? Countless utility districts. Park and Rec departments. Add 4WD, and you have ranchers and farmers who want a TRUCK and nothing more. Outfits that run parts out of a warehouse. Think NAPA, think industrial parts suppliers.
The vast majority of the places you listed order regular cab long beds.. even when the short bed was offered.
Valid point, but think about this …. the market needs common sense vehicles, GM needs to understand it’s better to sell what we want, or we will go elsewhere. GM, it’s better to have say 20% of something, than 100% of nothing. And GM, Ford, Dodge … better get worried, makes with names like Mahindra and Hyundai have work trucks that are not pretty, but they get the job done and you can be dern sure they are looking at ways to meet the federal requirements to be sold in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. And being work trucks they will have a good price point. In NC the Japanese Mini Trucks are legal to drive as long as you drive on roads with speed limits that are less than 55 mph. And they are selling, yes they are from 10 to 15 years old, but most have less than 25,000 miles, many have 4WD, auto/air or manual. The really nice ones sell for about $12K, others from $7K to $9K. For quite a few customers from VERY different demographics. I’d estimate maybe 8% will be off road only, the other 92% on the road. That’s who wants this configuration.
Brady Barefoot; Ok $$ trucks that are imported. Is it really the truck itself selling or the price point. GM can build a $12k truck, they’ll just need to pay everyone minimum wages. But these trucks that are limited to certain roads speeds sound like they barely can meet DOT and crash standards. They are small where I wouldn’t want to be in.
The market isn’t up to you or me … it’s up to the buyer. Are those Japanese mini trucks that are small, you betch’a , like you they aren’t for me. My only grip with the one I drove and it was a big one, they are hot to drive as you’re sitting on top of the engine in the summer time. As for those from Hyundai an Mahindra the price point is important for sure. And paying the workers … those in the factories are like most politicians, over valued an over paid. In 1987 Lee Iacocca was the CEO of Chrysler, he introduced the world to 20 an Out, a union rule that needs to go. The 1987 Plymouth Grand Voyager’s dealer cost was about $18K … Chrysler’s actual material cost. less than $5K … the rest was union benefits … about $13K per vehicle as a union worker could retire will full benefits after just 20 years in. Iacocca’s book “Talking Straight” goes into better detail. And some people wonder why GM, Ford, an Chrysler build cars outside the US.
You are getting close GM. I still have my 1993 Reg Cab Short bed with Power bucket seats in the Z71. 300,000 miles and still going strong. Build something like that, maybe with the 3.0 would be nice.
Same here , but 93 swb single gmc with 220k . i do everything in this truck. I tell people all the time , i don’t want a new truck I want my truck new.
This is good news, gm could have at least limit it two 2 Trim Levels, WT and Custom, that could have gave customers just a little something more to work with, but there might be some future buyers out there who may have the cash to turn that Work Truck into something special if they choose, though I feel the Online Package Options might be limited, at least the 3.0 Liter will be optional.
And please have a manual as an option.
That would be nice, the only thing is, if the Heavy Duty Silverado with the 6.6 Diesel does not even come with an optional Manual Trans., you can bet that we won’t see one in the Base Model 1500.
The stick is dead.
With a very low take rate, the cost of engineering and the added cost of buying it from a supplier like Getrag and it will probably be a 2 large option for a stick!!!
And then you have fuel economy, with double digit geared slushboxes,MPG will go down and that will get Bernie’s and AOC’s bowels in an uproar.
Well at least it’s a start. Will be waiting on the short bed Trail Boss like the red one in the picture. Any way to import one ?
5.3 option, or it’s a flop!
5.3 is available as an option. According to the 2022 Silverado web page.
All the sought after classic pick up s are short bed s. All the full size trucks I ever owned have been short beds – 84 f150 ,89 Silverado ,94 ram,13 ram , easy to park .easy u turns like driving a K 5 blazer 80s bronco .Ford F-150 can still get a V8 I’m looking at one for 2022
Give me a regular cab with a 8′ box in other options other than the WT model. Short box regular cab would be cool too. Put the fancy options on but also give it a better look with a two tone paint job.
It was already available.
Just make the option sheet just that….Options. If one wants to pay for it, build it!!!!! They all go down the same line. All the hot auction sales are SWB stepsides and fleet sides. Not many LWB, get big money. 1/2 ton long boxes are waste of money. Want a LWB, get a one ton!.
Price and Build configurator on Chevrolet dot com is not 100% for the 2022. All pictures are 2021 models. Packages and trim options all look the same. Of course it shows the price increase, $1100 for the LTZ trim. Standard cab short box is not yet listed.
The current configurator is the 2022 Silverado Limited, which is the stop-gap model before the 2022 Silverado refresh. Details:

An American company only building a sport model for other countries suck. After 50 yrs of Bow ties, I think I’m going Blue oval. Sorry Chevy, you brought this on and others will follow.
I’m really confused why do people keep saying they don’t offer the regular cab in the US? I have seen multiple people on this website say this. You can go to the build and price and build the regular cab so why is it not offered here.
The Regular Cab being offered is only with the Long Bed. We’re talking about the Regular Cab with the Standard Bed, which has not been offered in the US. It will be starting with the refreshed 2022 Silverado 1500.
Happy news, happy news . I don’t care for short beds but its great for those that do.
That is awesome news.
Think of it as a blank canvas for you to customize.
Hopefully the V-8 will be available.
I would love to go cruising in a Chevy Shorty.
5.3 will always be available in w/t trim.
customs are now t4 only.
