Refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado Custom Trail Boss Gets Optional Duramax Diesel LM2 Engine

The fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 made its debut in September with a variety of changes and upgrades over the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited and pre-refresh 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500, including several updates to the powertrain lineup. To this latter point, the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado Custom Trail Boss is now offered with the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine.

The refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado Custom Trail Boss is equipped with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine as standard, rated at 310 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 420 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 rpm, gaining a substantial torque boost with the 2022 model-year refresh. Models equipped with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine connect to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Meanwhile, refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado models equipped with the optional 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine are rated at 277 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm. The refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado Custom Trail Boss is also offered with the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine as an optional upgrade, rated at 420 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. Both the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine and naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine connect to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The final powertrain in the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 lineup is the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, rated at 355 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 383 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. The 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine is not offered with the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado Custom Trail Boss, but is optional on LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss trim levels. The 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine is also standard on LTZ and High Country trim levels.

    1. Are the thumbs down because people think the article is correct and the order guide is wrong?

Or are they just unhappy that it is no longer available with the 6.2?

  4. Good move on offering the 3.0 diesel with fuel prices going into the stratosphere. Also with proper care and maintenance the diesel will last 3X’s longer than a gasoline engine.

    1. Agreed – I’m hoping they’ll figure out a way to get the Diesel into the Z71 Suburban.

    2. I wish they would offer it across all trim levels the way Ram does the Ecodiesel in theirs.

  6. I wonder what GM’s production capacity is for the 3.0 Duramax Diesel?

This engine is now going to be a popular option for all GM pickups and full sized SUVs.

  9. How many of you that praise that diesel engine know that at 150’000 miles they have to pull the transmission and replace the rubber timing belt?
I’m a diesel guy from a farm but this is a ridiculous design—a diesel engine shouldn’t have to seen a wrench to at least 300’000 miles.

  10. Why would they offer the 6.2 instead of the 5.3 on the custom? Because the 5.3 will follow the 4.3’s path on the next gen truck.
