Chevy Malibu Production Back On Track

Production of the Chevy Malibu restarted on November 1st at the GM Fairfax Assembly facility in Kansas after being down in the U.S. since February. The facility is also responsible for production of the Cadillac XT4 crossover, which has been at full production capacity for the past few weeks.

Looking ahead, production of the 2022 Chevy Malibu is expected to ramp up in December, with the 2022 Chevy Malibu online configurator going live in September. Meanwhile, production of the 2022 Cadillac XT4 crossover is scheduled to begin on November 8th.

Production of the Chevy Malibu was halted in February as General Motors came to grips with the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage, prioritizing available chip supplies for its full-size trucks and SUVs. At that time, the Fairfax plant was idled completely, cutting production of both the Malibu and the Cadillac XT4. Production of the XT4 was originally set to restart in September, but that date was pushed back as the chip shortage continued to drag on, though the chip shortage has since improved.

The 2022 Chevy Malibu is poised to introduce just a few minor changes compared to the previous 2021 model year, including alterations to the options list and trim level structure. Among the changes is the deletion of the base L trim level, designating the LS trim as the entry-level model in the lineup. Additionally, an electronic parking brake will be included as standard across the model line.

Further updates will include the deletion of two exterior paint colors, namely Shadow Gray Metallic and Black Cherry Metallic, while Mineral Gray Metallic and Dark Ash Metallic will join the paint options lineup. Various dealer-installed options will also be removed from the list for the 2022 model year, such as the cargo area organizer, sport pedal kit, and inside rear window sunshade.

Under the hood, the 2022 Chevy Malibu will continue to offer two engine options, including the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine, rated at 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine, rated at 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.

C’mon, Chevy got rid of the rental car lot model and switched 2 paint colors. You make it sound like it’s becoming a Japanese stripper model.

  3. Are they planning on keeping the Malibu? I know a few years ago I read some confusing reports about what was being canceled and what wasn’t. For the foreseeable future is the Malibu safe?

The Malibu is staying in production until mid-2024. I’m guessing GM will be converting their Fairfax/K.C plant to electric vehicles afterwards.

      1. I’m thinking GM is in a “wait and see ” position with what Ford is doing with Fusion. IMO awd and V6 can be featured since the Regal was based off Malibu, the picture would be clearer by then.

  6. According to the dealership where I placed the order, Chevrolet has “picked up” or seen the order but they have not responded with a build date. As loyal customers, (this will be either our 5th or 6th Malibu, I’ve lost count), I wish we could get a little priority over the LS models being built in bulk for car lots.

    1. That sucks man. I hope you get your build date soon or better yet I hope you get your damn car soon. That really sucks and the fact you are a loyal customer and they still won’t at least respond to you makes it even worse. I hope you get that good news soon bro.

  7. Now that Fairfax is building the Malibu again, I am sure your Malibu will get built soon.

  8. Malibu is unpopular and after the chip shortage dropped it to nearly last place some consumer loyalty is gone.
VW built a US specific Pasat in the hope of increasing market share. GM would have been wise to do the same with a reskinned Impala sold at a Malibu price. Epsilon 2 LWB was one of the best platforms. Even CR ranked the car tops. A large highly reliable midsize would have aided Chevrolet compete with Camry. Even a SUS on D2XX like Ford Evos (China) could be a game changer

  11. Our Malibu that was ordered from the factory back in July, came in last week, and we brought it home on Saturday. Looks great and seems to be everything we expected. Only minor issue, the heated seats were installed, but without the chips to make them work. They are expected in the second quarter and will be installed when they come in.
