Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Spark sales performance during the third quarter of 2021 caused the city car to fall to second place its segment, as it was outsold by the Mitsubishi Mirage by 1,119 units. The circumstance marks a departure from norm, when the Spark outsells the Mirage by a substantial margin.

Despite its poor sales performance, the Spark accounted for 43 percent of the sales volume in its segment, down 16 percentage points on an annual basis. Meanwhile, the Mirage held a 56 percent share, up 15 percentage points from the year-ago quarter.
The mainstream city car segment contracted nearly 40 percent to 8,620 units during Q3 2021, meaning Spark sales fell significantly faster than the segment average during the quarter.
The GM Authority Take
The significant decline in Chevy Spark sales during Q3 2021 follows a 46 percent growth in sales during Q2 2021 and a 23 percent increase during Q1 2021.
The fact that the Mirage outsold the Spark is surprising and appears to be an anomaly brought about by the ongoing COVID-related vehicle shortage. Buyers do not have many options at this time, especially those making a new-car purchase.
We expect the Spark to regain its title as the segment leader once production and inventory return to normal levels.

I’ve had several Sparks and loved them all. My gripe here is when there’s an article on GMA about the Spark, they always show pictures of cars we (in the USA) can’t get!! Take that super cool yellow (or maybe orange-ish yellow) with the black trim and wheels. You can’t get that car in 2021 or 2022 according to the Chevrolet site. Why?
I think they are using file photos, the first place I look is the front headlight assembly, no amber side marker (non us market).
Dan – Spark is a great ca indeed. I have driven several of them and liked all of them, especially for the price.
As for the photos, it’s a global car and we have sales figures for global markets, so we try to represent that in each article. The first photo of the red one is the U.S.-market model while the latter two market specific to South Korea, where the Spark is treated with a bit more flair. It’s still the same general car, however, in much the same way as the Trax and Trailblazer.
Cheers!
Alex
Hey Alex, thanks and it’s great to see you on here once again. You’ve kind of been MIA. Welcome back.
Now, get us those cars here!! lol I’ll take that yellowish one.
Can’t buy what’s not there. I was looking for a base model in the Chicago area in the last few weeks. Nothing. Hated to do it, but ended with a 180,000 mi. Elantra (outrageous price) for daughter. Impressive little car w/a very strong drivetrain. Seems like this is the automakers version of “cash for clunkers”, ’till we’re forced into ev’s.
nice to see GM still selling an actual car.
I think people are realizing Mitsubishi has superior quality compared to GM. Do you know GM he three trucks on consumer report least reliable list. Something is very wrong at GM.
Mitsubishi Motors no longer exists like you think. You missed the part when they got in deep financial trouble after falsifying fuel economy numbers for years, got taken over by Nissan, and are transitioning everything into a rebadged Nissan.
Lol deep financial trouble? You mean like the bail out of 2008?
Like now Nissan got into financial trouble in 2001 and was bailed out by Renault. And Chrysler which went bankrupt in 1979 and 2009. And how France is currently running a $9 Billion Stellantis bailout.
News flash: the auto industry is highly cyclical.
Naw like how gm misused money then begged big brother to bail them out. Like how the American citizens didn’t want them to be bailed out but with the swipe of a pen they got it. News flash it’s hard to talk about another company with financial issues when this happened.
Ahem, excuse me Akear. You may wish to consult other GM’s on CR and while you are at it, take a good hard look at JDP. They will both disprove your comment.
BTW, just because a certain vehicle is listed on CR’s least reliable list doesn’t mean every GM product is bad. Also, just because those trucks may be on CR’s “list”, that could be from stupid things like people complaining about the infotainment system or other silly things. For the most part, GM’s trucks have been very good and you don’t sell that many of them every year if they are junk.
What is the point of reporting falling sales of GM automobiles that are in short supply or unavailable. At least lead with that fact first.
The point is clickbait
The Spark is a great car, but dealers can’t sell what they can’t get.
The last piece of Spark allocation we rec’d was a single piece back in June and that vehicle has a targeted production week of 2/14/2022.
I’d have to verify, but I believe that was the only Spark allocation we’ve earned all year.
Akear – RE Consumer Reports : Are you talking about the same CR that gave “best buy” ratings to a car they didn’t test ? And were finally forced to admit they gave the rating solely due to the car’s reputation ? The same CR that absolutely slammed the Pontiac Vibe yet gushed over the (same car) Toyota Matrix ? THAT Consumer Reports ? I give them the same credibility as I do the National Enquirer.
I have spark 2019 very love it no problem good ride never go garage, tres bon véhicule pas trouble avec bonne qualité jamais ete aux garage a par pour l entretien tres bonne qualité
