On a segment share basis, the Blazer accounted for just 2 percent, a decline from the 6 percent held in the year-ago quarter, and well behind the 17 percent share held by the segment-leading Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep entry bumped the Toyota Highlander from the top spot, which recorded a 13 precent segment share. Both were followed by the Ford Explorer at 9 percent and Honda Pilot at 8 percent. The rest of the field had a 5 percent segment share or less.
The mainstream mid- and full-size crossover segment, comprised of unibody utilities with a starting price in the vicinity of $30,000, contracted 7 percent to 486,998 units in Q3 2021, with Blazer sales significantly underperforming the average.
Narrowing down the segment to only midsize crossovers with two rows of seating – just like the Blazer – puts the vehicle in last place. The Blazer was outsold by Hyundai Santa Fe (by 16,062 units), along with the Ford Edge, Honda Passport, Toyota Venza, and Nissan Murano. Like the Blazer, the Santa Fe, Edge, and Murano all saw a decline in sales volume this quarter. The Venza, which is all-new for the 2021 model year, posted the biggest increase in sales.

It’s worth noting that the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which we typically included in the midsize two-row segment, is now offered in both two- and three-row configurations. Unfortunately, Stellantis does not break out sales figures of both models, leading us to remove it from this comparison.
The Blazer’s share of the midsize, two-row CUV segment fell 16 percentage points to 11 percent compared to the year-ago quarter.
The mainstream mid-size, two-row crossover segment contracted 14.4 percent to 94,873 units during the third quarter of 2021, with Blazer underperforming the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
Production delays of the Chevy Blazer due to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage has continued to obliterate supply, with the impact of that demonstrated during the third quarter of 2021. Inventory of Chevy‘s midsize crossover was at a scant five days at the beginning of November.
The circumstance is the continuation of supply issues for over a year now. Back in September of 2020, GM Authority exclusively reported that Blazer inventory was running at 28 days as of the beginning of that month. The figure was the same in January 2021. By the end of February 2021, supply had increased slightly to 31 days. Three months later, it had dropped again to just 16 days as of the beginning of May, falling to 12 days as of the beginning of July, and eight days as of the first week of August.
Chevy Blazer production finally restarted at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, on October 18th after being originally scheduled to resume October 4th. Now that the assembly line is back up and running, inventory will get replenished and we expect the Camaro-inspired midsize crossover to once again find sales success like it did just a year ago, when it placed second in its direct segment.

This is what happens when you outsource to the south of the border.
Mexico has nothing to do with this mess but is a convenient scapegoat. Mark Ruess and Mary Barra make decisions, not the Mexico work force.
GM, since they can do Cruise AV, can certainly build chips since US government is handing out subsidies. This long-term would cut costs & be a great new business for American workers.
The blame is solely on Barra. Mexicans are hard working people.
Watch sales fall when GM starts leaving heated seats out of these already overpriced mall crawlers.
Heated seats are completely useless when you’re wearing a winter coat.
Your Ignorance is noted.
Evan
In Chicago, all my cars have had heated seats since 2008. Have only used them a handful of times.
Then again here in the Midwest most people know how to dress for the weather.
A lot of people still like them and use them which means they aren’t useless. Glad to know you are capable of dressing yourself.
Not completely I still have your wife pick out my ties.
I’m not married but by all means I’m down with running the train
I live further north than you but we don’t get the wind like in Chicago.
You are so completely wrong. They’re even nice in cloth seats, but leather without heated pads in the winter is terrible.
Not for me. I love my heated seats and heated steering wheel. Never will go without again.
@Peter G I’m to the west of you in montana and I completely agree. Once winter gets here I’m wearing my peacoat or my Filson lined wool packer coat. Between those two as thick as they are you are right I wouldn’t even feel the heated seats lol. Peter what do you think these guys did before heated seats or steering wheels were available lol.
Daniel,
I think these are the people who wear a heavy winter coat with shorts and flip-flops. Then can’t figure out why their hands and feet are freezing.
I’m guessing they suffer all winter long.
🤣👍
Peter I will never understand the shorts and flip flops with the hoodie or coat on lmao. Every time I see someone dressed like this I just shake my head.
GM has announced that they will be retrofitting heated seats at no charge for any that were left out and giving the customer a $50 credit for the inconvenience
Is this the same Bob Lutz that was in charge of the 5th gen camaro. Is there any info on the heated steering wheel & ventilated seat option or any other option for that matter? we have been waiting months & months for our new blazer rs even put a deposit down on a sold order we where supposed to get a 2021 way back in June then in late July we where told it would be a 2022 & now missing tons of main options. looks like we may have to buy from a different manufacture if their is no heated seats, heated steering wheel, ventilated seats, unless all are or will be installed when available at no charge from GM. For such a high priced vehicle there should be no options deleted. Resale or trade in will be horrible with all these missing options down the road. Dealership claims they are still waiting for allocation for our new RS Blazer with no info from the Factory on what options will be deleted. Wife is not going to wait for much longer before jumping ship on GM!!
I totally agree with your thoughts Todd. I’m looking at one tomorrow loaded. If the dealership can workout with the remained payments on my Encore I’ll have it for sure. I don’t want to wait to order next year and have no heated seats!
High priced Chevy? Buddy, go buy a Cadillac and you will get all those options.
Hey Todd, we have been waiting for our blazer RS since July so I empathize with your concerns. If nothing else, we should have a couple of rare vehicles that no one will be able to find after this chip crisis is over.
I’d look elsewhere. Seriously.
It may not be cold enough in the South, but I use the Heated Steering Wheel & Heated Seats quite a lot. It helps with arthritis. It is mandatory or I will not buy the vehicle.
Also, I don’t think I can rely on a Car Vendor to promise me I can / will get them at a later date. Similar to the GM Battery promises.
The so called “Blazer” is joke as an off-road vehicle! No more than another crossover totally unlike it’s original namesake! When is GM going to get their head out of their ass and build a real “off-roader” again to compete with Toyota and Ford?
Yah ! People really need those off road features to get to the Dunkin Donuts drive through !
Why buy GM foreign junk when you can buy a made in America Jeep Cherokee. Better vehicle than the overpriced Blazer.
GM did not think people would notice the Blazer was built in Mexico. When you go to a showroom and look at the content sticker and see only 20% US content you can see why the Blazers sales are going down in the US.
Crazy times for sure! Know a guy whose brother was looking at a RAV4 in Calgary. Sat down with the salesman to set the price, salesman slid a contract in front of him that he HAD to sign if he wanted the vehicle. 3 days ago Toyota enacted a policy if you buy a new Toyota you must give a $5000 retention deposit held by the dealership. This is over and above any normal deposit you would put down. After 3 months you MUST bring the vehicle back to the dealership for visual inspection at which point the $5000 deposit is returned to you. Between 3 months and 2 YEARS you can only sell it in Canada. If you export the vehicle to the US, you are fined $15,000!!! Doesn’t matter if it’s a top end Highlander or a base Corolla. If you sell the vehicle within the allotted time frame and that buyer exports the vehicle out , YOU are still fined the $15,000!!!! Believe it or not this is legal now. Brother took it to a lawyer and he said, “You sign, you’re liable!!!
It just goes to show how much gm/Chevy missed the mark with this thing and its name.
All these GM vehicles finishing at the back of the pack in sales is one of the reason Toyota is ahead of GM in US sales. That is right folks, for the first time in 90 years GM is about to lose its domestic sales crown. It has been reported as of mid November GM is 90,000 units behind Toyota.
The styling of the 2022 Blazer is pitiful, as well.
