Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Buick Encore GX sales performance saw a slight increase of 3 percent to 16,500 units during the third quarter of 2021, placing the crossover 7th out of 21 entries in the mainstream subcompact crossovers segment. The Encore GX was outsold by the Honda HR-V in first, the Encore GX’s corporate cousin and VSS-F platform mate, the Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevrolet Trailblazer sales), in second, Jeep Compass in third, Kia Soul in fourth, Nissan Kicks in fifth, and Hyundai Kona in sixth and the Encore GX in seventh.
The Buick outsold the Mazda CX-30, Jeep Renegade, Kia Seltos, Ford EcoSport (see running Ford EcoSport sales), Toyota C-HR, Hyundai Venue, Kia Niro, and the Bow Tie brand’s second segment entry, the Chevy Trax (see running Chevrolet Trax sales). These were followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Buick’s original entry, the Buick Encore, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Mazda CX-3 (which has been discontinued by the aforementioned CX-30; see Mazda CX-3 sales), and the Fiat 500X.
It’s worth noting that Buick fields two entries in this segment, the Encore GX and Encore. The two crossovers are mechanically not related despite carrying the same base name. In fact, the Buick Encore GX slots between the “regular” Buick Encore and Buick Envision in the brand’s vehicle lineup.

From a segment share standpoint, the Encore GX accounted for a 7 percent segment share, one percentage point higher than the 6 percent a year ago. By comparison, the segment-leading Honda HR-V held a 15 percent segment share, while the Trailblazer and Jeep Compass each held 10 percent.
It’s also worth noting that the Buick Encore was outsold by its platform mate, the Chevy Trailblazer, by 9,031 units. This was more than expected given that the Encore GX is priced to start roughly $3,000 higher than the Trailblazer. In addition, the Encore GX outsold the “regular” Encore by 12,488 units. This is explained by GM beginning to allocate more production capacity to the Encore GX over the regular Encore.

As such, GM outsold FCA by 17,452 units, marking the ninth time that The General sold more units than FCA in this segment since the introduction of the second-generation Jeep Compass, which has made significant gains in the sales charts since its launch. The Compass took third place in the segment, right behind the Trailblazer. During Q3 2021, GM held a combined 22 percent segment of the segment to Stellantis’ 14 percent.

However, the Chevy Trailblazer posted the largest increase of 147 percent during the quarter.

That said, the Kia Soul could be considered part of the smaller A-segment. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai and Kia sales totals leaves the Korean duo with 44,661 units, or 7,641 units less than GM.
The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted over 11 percent to 249,194 units during Q3 2021.
The GM Authority Take
Encore GX sales held steady during the third quarter of 2021, with the 16,500 U.S. sales representing a very slight increase over the 16,019 units sold just a year ago. The results enabled the fresh subcompact crossover to gain a percentage point in segment share.
Sales of both the Buick Encore GX and its corporate cousin and platform mate, the Chevy Trailblazer, have continued to grow since launching, showing that GM has a pair of winners on its hands in a very competitive and crowded field.
We expect Buick Encore GX sales to grow in the near- and medium-term future as supply and awareness of the model reaches even more favorable levels. In particular, supply of the Encore GX should continue to improve as GM allocates more of the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea to produce the Encore GX at the expense of the “regular” Encore, which is also produced at the same facility.
However, it’s worth noting that ongoing microchip shortage could have a potentially negative impact on Encore GX sales. GM has been managing the situation by diverting its limited chip supply to more profitable models like full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. However, it would appear that the Korea-made Encore GX has not been impacted by this shortage.

lots of good data, but since there’s almost nothing on any lots, it represents production capability more than popularity.
Considering not much is getting built, I guess this means that people are buying what’s available like it or not and cleaning them out of inventory more than anything else.
It’s hard to gauge popularity these days.
That said, it’s a cute little crossover. I wish it came with a turbo 2.0L 4 cylinder instead of a 3 cylinder and a CVT.
I think you’ll be surprised by how much power the Turbo 3 can produce. From what I’ve heard, it’s smooth too. Toyota is currently working on bringing a GR Corolla to Market. That’s also going to be a Turbo 3–Cylinder, but with 256hp, and Torque not that far behind!
What about long term reliability, which is most important to consumers?
18 months (155 hp 2020 model) and counting, no recalls for me, no issues. very smooth CVT, good acceleration onto highway. Absolutely no complaints. I know it’s not long-term but it’s a start.
A decade ago Americans laughed at a 3 banger. Now we see they can be powerful and that fuel efficient ICE motors are possible. It’s too late to save them, regardless of Mazda’s breakthroughs or even the development of a powerful 2 cylinder which iui s possible.
I can echo your remarks. After 6 months and 6,000 miles I’m pleasantly satisfied with the performance of the 1.3 with the CVT. I can cruise at 75-80 and still get 32 mpg. I didn’t think I would like the CVT but they have made so much progress the last few years that many of the bugs have been worked out. Some are folks are recommending the 2L turbo for the GX. In my option it would be too much. The 1.5 turbo would be a nice option for those wanting more power. Most owners of the Encore GX with the 1.3 agree that it as plenty of power.
As others have said Ama if you don’t build it and put it on the lot you can not sell it .. these numbers are all meaningless cuz I can I show you more people would buy the regular Encore because it’s at least $5,000 cheaper and that’s what the seniors who buy Buicks want. As usual GM management is playing games and favoring one model over the other for internal politics
In actuality, the GX base model MSRP is only $1,000 higher
Why is GM delaying so long letting us know if we are going to get the GEM-platform Encore (already on sale in China) here in the States to replace the present Encore? The GEM-platform Encore, like the present Encore, wold be sold alongside the GX.
Somebody at GM needs to get cracking on an announcement one way or another…..Encore fans have been left in the dark too long.
BTW, I currently have an Encore GX and love it. 1.3L, 9-speed, and AWD.
