A Detailed Walkaround Of The GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX Concept: Video

The GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX made its debut at the Overland Expo Mountain West 2021 event in Loveland, Colorado in late August. While its arrival flew somewhat under the radar, there’s actually one very good reason to get excited about this accessorized concept truck: we believe it serves as a sneak preview of the upcoming 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X production model.

We were able to get a closer look at the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX at the 2021 SEMA show in Las Vegas this week, so we decided to record this walkaround video show you some of the vehicle’s more interesting features.

As our video shows, the Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX is finished in a gloss grey color and features contrasting black plastic fenders, a matte black hood decal and red accented tow hooks. The truck also rides on 17-inch AEV Crestone wheels, which feature a matching red lip accent, along with aggressive 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires.

We believe that this concept previews the upcoming 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X production model, which will essentially be the GMC equivalent of the Chevy Colorado ZR2, only for the next generations of both trucks. As such, it also features various off-road-focused upgrades, including the same MultiMatic DSSV dampers as the ZR2, as well as the same front and rear electronic locking differentials.

Other performance upgrades include stronger cast-iron control arms, wider front and rear tracks, underbody skidplates, guide lines, as well as AEV’s off-road rocker panel protectors. Out back resides a spare tire swivel mount so a spare tire can be kept on the back of the truck and swivel out of the way of the tailgate when bed access is needed.

An aftermarket bed cap, a rooftop tent and an awning, plus an onboard cooktop and refrigerator, make the OVRLANDX more of a mobile command post than a regular pickup.

A prototype of what we believe to be the upcoming 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X

As previous GM Authority spy shots show, the upcoming 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X will ride on 17-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. This model will be based on the overhauled 2023 GMC Canyon, which will be the first model year of the all-new, third-generation Canyon.

This new, third-generation Canyon will ride on an updated version of the same GMT 31XX platform used by the second-gen model and will also introduced all-new exterior and interior, among other changes and updates. Powering the next-gen model will be the turbocharged 2.7L I-4 L3B engine, where it’s expected to make upwards of 300 horsepower and around 330 pound-feet of torque.

  1. Wow… about time! The OVRLANDX is not only serious but going after the segment hard, Toyota, Nissan, and Jeep, need to ramp up. The wider chassis alone gives it a better ride.
IMO, the ZR2 needs to muster up with those add on options too. IMO, this hits the spot and I’m considering when its produced. I owned a 94 single cab GMC Sonoma Highrider and at that time, nothing in its class could touch it.
Bro had a 96 Toyota 4×4 off road, I smoked him on the street and off road. Also in maintenance and repairs. My interior was made for 200+ lb people, his wasn’t, cramped and rough.

Anyway, so where is the 4×4 version of this – in the SUV version in either 2 or 4 door versions to take on the Bronco and Jeep.

Can someone render a SUV from the OVRLANX and ZR2 to show gm it can be made…

    1. It is to have no less than 310 and more torque than the V6 now has. Expect one of dull size tunes. The new engine would lay waste to the old 4.3. My 3.6 already does in performance and mpg in a heavier truck.

Might check out the Colorado Canyon forum as guys have been building trucks like this for a while. No need to render.

  2. Why can’t we do 2 doors again not everybody wants 4 doors. I think the younger people would love to see what was years ago. I guess we just bend over to stupid GM. It’s not a people company anymore..

  3. Agreed, one of the better-looking overlanders if not the BEST looking one out there. Nicely done.

  4. “where it’s expected to make upwards of 300 horsepower and around 330 pound-feet of torque” Is this correct? Is the 2.7 going to be “de tuned” for the Colorado/Canyon?

    1. I noticed that too. I think it’s likely to get the same tune as the original L3B in the Silverado and Sierra.

  5. Barra is right, GM is way undervalued, but Wall Street investors do not have faith that GM can pull off all their promises. GM has not proven they are worthy, and GM management seems too scripted and not genuinely hungry to change the internal culture. Ford gets it, but GM management seems tooo arrogant to see what is happening all around them. Ford CEO Farley knows there is going to be an upcoming war for EV marketshare and is preparing his troops for battle, and Mary Barra is busy skipping around La La La La La La… Later Mary will say, Wow, what happened?

GM stock is having a good week, but I made more on my RIVN IPO investment in 2 days than I have made in GM stock year to date.
