In July, the 2022 Chevy Colorado mid-size pickup introduced an all-new Trail Boss Package for off-roading enthusiasts. However, GM Authority has learned that the package is unavailable to order for the time being. It’s unclear if this is a supplier issue.
The Trail Boss Package for the 2022 Chevy Colorado Z71 (RPO code PEC) adds the following LPO-level, dealer installed equipment to the mid-size pickup:
- 17-inch High gloss Black wheels (RPO SE0)
- Red recovery hooks (RPO W0H)
- Black tailgate lettering (RPO SB9)
- Black Colorado emblems (RPO SMG)
- Front 1-inch Leveling Kit (RPO SQS)
- Performance Front Skid Plate (RPO SIQ)
- Performance Mid Skid Plate (RPO SIR)
The Trail Boss Package is normally available on the Colorado in the LT and Z71 trim levels equipped with four-wheel drive, and with all three engine options. For 2022, both the LT and Z71 trims are available in Extended Cab, Crew Cab Short Box, and Crew Cab Long Box body configurations.
In spite of the current unavailability of the all-new package, GM is showcasing a specially prepared 2022 Chevy Colorado Z71 equipped with the Trail Boss Package this week at the 2021 SEMA Show, featuring a variety of official Chevrolet Accessories, including the Chevrolet Performance 1-inch front leveling kit, Chevrolet Performance underbody skid plates, Red front recovery hooks and 17-inch ZR2-spec Black accessory wheels. This unique version also features a rear bed cap and a rooftop tent manufactured by Freespirit Recreation.
Readers with long memories may recall the Trail Boss Package that was briefly offered on the 2015 and 2016 model-year Chevy Colorado. That package included different off-road-focused equipment such as an automatic locking differential, a transfer case shield, front recovery hooks and black three-inch round rocker steps, among more.
The 2022 Chevy Colorado will continue to offer the same powertrain options, which include the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGZ and 2.5L I4 LCV gasoline engines along with the 2.8L I4 LWN turbo-diesel “baby Duramax” engine. As we reported previously, the mid-size truck is currently not being built with the LCV engine as a result of a parts constraint, although the LGZ and LWN engines remain in production.

Lets just blame it on GM.. Very poor planning…
While I can’t verify if it is an issue with the supplier or if it is a shipping issue. I can say that the issues is the wheels used in the Trailboss package for the Colorado. I had ordered 6 for my dealership and they have been on the lot for almost 3 weeks waiting for the wheels all other parts have been installed, yesterday I was informed by my parts manager that gm has cancelled the shipment of the wheels they did not specify the reason. They did say they was issuing a new invoice and monroney sticker at the correct price without the parts. This is very disappointing since two of the trucks have already been sold and those customers are to say the least very unhappy about this.
What happens now when something like this happens?
Well there’s a few ways to deal with an issue like this, not all dealers will have the same options but the first is the refund the difference. The second would be to put aftermarket wheels and tires that are comparable with similar value on the vehicle. and third if the customer doesn’t accept one of those options is to allow the customer to return the vehicle or change to another that would be satisfactory within reason. of course the last being the least favorable but the right thing to do for the customer. Since the issue was no fault of the customer. (Not the dealers fault either but always the one to pay when things like this happen)
Hopefully it works out for both of you guys. Have you had this issue a lot over the last year? This might be a dumb question but did the truck ship without any wheels on it?
We had had a few issues over the past year but all were minor, this one being a bit more of an issue since some of the trucks are sold already, and the trucks ship to use as completed like any other truck they just need to have the trailboss package installed. So for the Colorado it shows up as a regular lt 4×4 or z71 then we swap and install the parts at the deanship to make it a trailboss.
there has to be wheels on open market that are close to GM wheels. Ask Customers if that is acceptable.
Parts in general are a problem. I saw a guy needing an
Knee pad for a CUV need 6 month to get one under warranty.
Many parts are on water and we are just waiting to get them. No bad planning just a shipping system that has failed and a government not doing much to fix it.
Ships are just now searching out other ports to unload and it will take time to get the trucks and trailer bases to move the containers.
I personally think the government should bring in their logistics people to oversee these systems to get things caught up. Our economy may hinge on this.
I work now under an ex military logistics officer. He fixed issues I never thought we would ever solve. These guys are trained to deal with massive issues and to work them out on a lightning scale.
The other thing in play here is GM sells tons of Z71 trucks vs the Trail Boss. So with limited assets 5hey are going to build what they have orders for and the models that move fastest at this point in time.
The 22 models will be limited as the change over to the all new 23 is coming. I expect it is not set yet due to the shortages.
Does anyone know the numbers on units actually produced and sold before they pulled the plug on the package? I bought one used. Window sticker confirmed trail boss package. The only thing not right was the air dam was not deleted (I deleted it). The wheels are form the Z71 line I believe, gloss black. Mine’s exterior paint is black, so it looks extra sinister with the blackout bow ties and lettering.
