General Motors just launched the 2022 Chevy Malibu XL range in China, with some notable updates to keep Chevrolet‘s flagship sedan fresh in the world’s largest market. The automaker released a total of six versions of the 2022 Malibu XL that include powertrain changed as well as improved technology and convenience features.
The 2022 Chevy Malibu XL represents the seventh model year of the current-generation Malibu, which is sold with the XL suffix in China, but boasts exactly the same dimensions as the model made in North America. As such, the vehicle remains unchanged in its exterior and interior design, adjusted slightly with the addition of new colors and finishes.
While the previous model year offered three engine choices, the 2022 Chevy Malibu now gets the two most powerful ones. SAIC-GM decided to phase out the base turbocharged 1.3L I-3 engine, keeping the turbocharged 1.5L LFV I-4 with 166 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque as well as the turbocharged 2.0L LSY I-4 with 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. Both are mated to GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission.
However, the main novelty of the Chinese-market 2022 Chevy Malibu XL is the adoption of a new 10-inch touchscreen with higher resolution and improved responsiveness. The 2022 Malibu XL also includes the Bow Tie brand’s latest infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android-based local services.
In addition, all versions of the 2022 Chevy Malibu XL come standard with the convenience features most demanded by Chinese customers, such as dual-zone automatic climate control, nano-level PM2.5 air conditioning filter, temperature and air humidity sensors, smart keyless entry, pushbutton engine start and a comprehensive suite of ten active safety technologies.
The updated 2022 Chevy Malibu XL is now available for sale throughout the Chevrolet dealer network in China, where sedans still maintain a high level of popularity. The 2022 Malibu XL lineup, which includes range-topping LT and Redline trim levels, has a starting price of CNY 164,900, equivalent to about $25,750 USD at the current exchange rate.
